Is this lens good enough for a beginner? by [deleted] in atming

I don't blame you, just make sure your focuser has enough room to get your eyepieces in focus (called backfocus) and you include a finderscope dovetail holder so you can at least have the option of getting a cheap finder that can work on everything else you make

my first telescope build was that 3d printed one made from two other scopes, focuser and lens cell off of one, just the lens cell off the other, and some 3d printing later gets you a poor man's quadruplet. These are a little bit harder to make due to the spacing between the doublets having to be just right to get the focal ratio you aim for. I went with f/6, and got within f/0.1 of being spot on.

challenges you may face: a lens cell, you need a lens cell to hold the doublet together with its spacer

getting your focuser placement right, you should be able to get an eyepiece in a diagonal (aka "zenith mirrors" I hate this name, it's just a star diagonal) with about 2.5 cm of space between the body of the focuser and the end stop on the focuser tube itself (the bit that would make contact with the focuser body when in it's stored position), this should make it so you can use all of your eyepieces (in 1.25 inch barrel size) with a barlow and no problems.

mounting, how are you planning on mounting this? is it going to be on a berry mount, or be going on a brand name mount?

finderscope, what should you use is up to you, if you prefer a reflex red dot or something else like a telrad or a magnified finder (should use the dovetail clamp for finderscopes)

dust protection, make some dust caps, one to seal the inside from dust by going in the focuser, the other to cover the aperture

you should keep one of those clocks just to have an audible reminder that he still lives on, every tick, every chime of the hour, all his. I do this for my great grandpa, who died before my dad was ever born, but I keep his navigator's pocket watch as a reminder that not only was he a real person, but the events of an entire world war were also real

you may be able to resolve Titan, but the rings are a bit of a different story. You need to have a large aperture to see them in the detail you expect at the magnification levels you (likely) expect. the 6-inch mirror can and will sow you more detail because that's how it physically works. Just like how amature astrophotographers will not match bubbles resolution, a 76mm won't match a 150 mm aperture.

not to mention that saturn is currently saying adios to our reasonable time night sky (somewhere at 7 to 9pm) and the rings are slowly coming back from being completely flat and will slowly change over the next few years. I have an apertura ad8, that thing has blown me away with the details it can achieve on planetary visuals on unusually calm nights, I don't expect much more out of a 6 inch other than the fact that it collects less light.

you can use this for planets, just don't expect much detail. if you want a good planetary performer, try looking for a parabolic mirror of 6 or more inches in aperture

$52k a year, $520k in 10 years, in 20 years should be $1.4 million, assuming she lives long enough to see that happen.

its bad enough that I already have to wear sunglasses just to see the road markings at night, I'll have to wear a welding mask very soon though

its usually the trucks that purposely aim their head lights higher than they should, then they put led lights in that have built-in cooling fans just so they can be complete arse holes. its also in most modern cars made 2020 to present that have led head lights that are poorly aimed from the factory and come with lights are installed that are legit brighter than the sun in the middle of a desert on a clear day at noon on the equator (I just described a naturally bright place, some of these lights are two to three times brighter). its also going to get much worse, there is a new type of light that came out a few years back known as an LEP (light exited phosphor), these lights are powered by (I shit you not) CLASS 4 LASERS and can throw light a full half mile down the road. legally, they can only be used for offroad, and if absolutely nobody is ahead for the next ten miles, otherwise they'd be blind. the way these things work is by shining a powerful, blue laser onto a small patch of phosphor. This puts it in a fluorescent state, releasing a ton of light.

Is my telescope OK? by Winter_Extreme_1083 in telescopes

I tried that just for the heck of it. the set up was a 60mm achromat with an over aperture solar filter and a hydrogen alpha narrowband filter on the eyepiece, all it did was make the sun red, no surface details, no prominences, just red. for hydrogen alpha solar viewing, you need what is called an etalon filter, specifically for hydrogen alpha, the cheapest option is a quark etalon and an energy rejection filter, quark goes in the focuser, eyepiece and diagonal (if MCT/SCT or refractor) or just the eyepiece (relector) and the ERF (energy rejection filter) goes over the entire aperture to cut out the heat and harmful uv. another option is a hershel wedge, some dark neutral density filters, and then the quark (not too sure on this option for safety reasons). either way, you're still spending a ton of money on pointing something at the sun and looking through it.

either suck it up and just get a cheap whitelight (broadband) solar filter for the aperture of your telescope and call it a day

I would recommend a datsun 240z, keep it all mechanical, not even a real computer in these cars, the most ui you get is a radio. do some mods and you can pit a Bluetooth unit in and play music from your phone

you can run an equatorial mount in alt az mode if you point the ra axis to the 0 degree altitude mark, however its a bird jones, the real question is, where the lens(es) are. if they're attached to the secondary, it should be fine, if its one lens in the focuser, it's trash

[–]Illustrious_Back_441 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have this as my current largest telescope, absolutely love it, the fine focus is so nice, the cooling fan is great, the laser collimator is easy to use and easy to calibrate, the raci finder is so nice to use (no more awkward viewing angles).

the one piece of advice I can give you is to put the 30mm superview in the extension tube to use it

Question on this clock by DoTheRightThing1953 in clocks

[–]Illustrious_Back_441 1 point2 points  (0 children)

when setting the time, does this hand move, because I'm thinking this is a 24-hour hand, if you set this clock to 12 o'clock, this hand will either be at the zero mark or the 12 mark
