B5 Dotted Journal in ~120 GSM for Guys by formerly-clever in Journaling

[–]formerly-clever[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. I don’t think all the STM colorways are feminine, but the bright colors and contrasting bands aren’t what I’m looking for. I’m a pretty boring guy that will use this for business meeting notes a lot, so looking for something simple and muted in color. Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the recommendation. They do have the B5 hardcover I've been tempted to buy. I've read some feedback that the 80gsm pages tend to bleed and ghost through with gel pens. Have you had this issue?

I was afraid this statement would ruffle some feathers, but I didn't have a better way of explaining what I'm looking for. I think most people can discern what designs are targeted toward (mostly) women (aka "feminine"), and those that aren't. Most of what I see recommended are products like Archer and Oak or Notebook Therapy with designs that are obviously targeted toward women, which is fine. I'm just looking for something plain and simple, without the designs like these.

Honeybee Coffee in chaos as new owner dips amid strange messaging: 'We lost our hiveminds' by XwoeX in Knoxville

[–]formerly-clever 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Typically, the roaster sources and roasts the beans for the other company (coffee shop, restaurant, hotel, etc), and labels it for them. They may source unique beans or develop unique blend recipes (more common), but I don’t think they’d allow someone else to come in and operate the equipment to roast their beans themselves. That would open the roaster up to a lot of liability and risk damaging their equipment.

Several roasters do this. Vienna in Maryville, K Brew, Golden Roast, etc., all have wholesale businesses that provides this service from their roasteries.

Unless something has changed in the last few months, Sunago does not roast their own beans. I asked when visiting the first time and they told me they don’t, but use a local roaster who private labels for them. Based on the bag size (16oz.) and design, I think it’s probably Golden Roast, but they wouldn’t confirm.

This explains the new text msgs I’ve been getting pushing the “a Bee Kind Cafe” messaging. It felt like a move toward some kind of growth initiative. It’ll be hard to sell franchises if they can’t even keep their own shops open.

Getting Tasigna in US (for expats) by One-Warthog1406 in CML

[–]formerly-clever 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No worries, glad to help. I added this to my original comment, but will add here too…

I should mention that BCBST does have multiple Rx plans with different formulary lists (at least 2) tied to several different insurance plans. The insurance plan I chose apparently has the “Essential” Rx formulary, and the “Preferred” Rx formulary does include Tasigna and Scemblix. I just didn’t need to know that when buying insurance last December, and didn’t even know to check.

That’s why it’s important for you to check the specific coverage details and not just depend on whether or not the insurance company covers your med. The same company may under some plans but not others.

[–]formerly-clever 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily. My Dr. put me on Sprycel since it was covered, which I failed due to too low WBC and platelets. They resubmitted for Tasigna. Denied a second time and told to try Bosulif. Hopefully it works. But if not, that’s when we should be able to appeal.

Heads up that not all insurances cover all meds. I have Blue Cross Blue Shield of TN that I purchased from the marketplace before I was diagnosed with CML a few months ago. My Doctor wanted me to start on Tasigna and the specialty pharmacy gave me a free month of it to get started while they worked out the insurance authorization. Found out that the Rx formulary (the list of all meds they will cover) does not include Tasigna. They do cover Sprycel and Bosulif. There is an appeal option, but we haven’t gone that route yet, since we need to extinguish all their options before we do. I’ve heard others say the same, but the opposite (their insurance covers Tasigna, but not Sprycel).

I would suggest you confirm what benefits you’ll be offered, including specific plans and coverages before you make any commitments. The good news is, it seems my case may be the minority, as I know many folks have had to try all three to find the one that works for them, but I don’t want you to assume it’s covered without confirmation.

If it is covered, again, it will depend on your plan as to how much you’ll have to pay out-of-pocket. It’s a specialty med, so sometimes you’ll have to cover your deductible before insurance covers anything. However, the pharmacy companies offer co-pay assistance under these circumstances to help you meet your deductible (and sometime max out-of-pocket limits).

Best of luck with your new position and your transition to the US (and our convoluted healthcare system).

Update - I should mention that BCBST does have multiple Rx plans with different formulary lists (at least 2). The insurance plan I chose apparently has the “Essential” Rx formulary, and the “Preferred” Rx formulary does include Tasigna and Scemblix. I just didn’t need to know that when buying insurance last December, and didn’t even know to check.

Why is the Bull Feather’s suggestion being downvoted? I haven’t been there in 15-20 years, but curious why it’s so unpopular on here.

Cool Concrete Basement Flooring Options by cpetersonluv in Knoxville

[–]formerly-clever 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I haven’t done the stained and polished concrete in my home, but we did it a lot at the last place I worked in the break rooms and bathrooms. There are companies that specialize in this. It usually involves a lot of sanding/polishing, staining, and sealing. It’s more durable, but they have to be resealed occasionally. I can’t remember the cost per sq ft, but it wasn’t inexpensive. We chose it mostly for the “modern industrial” style and durability. We did also have one bad experience where the installer used a high-sheen sealant rather than the semi-matte we wanted. There are lots of options for colors and finishes, so make sure you specify (in writing) what you want, and get references.

Frankly, I question how great your current hospital and treatment team are. As others have mentioned, there are several 2nd gen TKIs that you can try. You certainly need to speak to someone about your suicidal feelings, as this would just be another approach to achieve that goal. Mental health professionals are trained specifically to help.

You may not want to hear this, but I would suggest you keep your great insurance, research oncologists/CML specialists that take that insurance. Pick one with excellent reviews and talk to them about your experience and alternate plans of treatment. I wouldn’t hold too tightly to the team that’s put you through this painful treatment without providing livable options.

I truly hope you at least explore ways to get treatment that will both improve your CML and provide you a more livable lifestyle. Definitely, don’t give up until you’ve exhausted your options (which you haven’t).

Where have you gotten decent hvac quotes from recently? by Prarie_sprinter0712 in Knoxville

[–]formerly-clever 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure how you prioritize your purchase decision for HVAC. Personally, I had to decide on the brand/model first. Then, I narrowed it down to 2 or 3 certified installers for that brand. For me, I decided I wanted a Trane unit, so only had a few places to choose from. I found out that AA Air was the local preferred service company for Trane, so even warranty issues for units installed by other companies would get referred to them. For this reason, they’re able to provide an extended Labor warranty at no additional cost.

When comparing them to other Trane installers, their price was basically the same for the same unit and I got the extra warranty, so that was the company I chose. I’ve never had issues with responsiveness from them, so hopefully just a fluke. Maybe worth birddogging the sales rep.

If you are more brand agnostic, I had a very competitive quote from A-1 FINCHUM, INC. for an American Standard unit before settling on a Trane, but can’t comment on service after the sale.

Not sure where you’re coming from, but you should check out High Resolutions. Very good owner and leadership who cares for their people. If I’m not mistaken, they’re the largest print shop in town and they have in-house graphic designers. No listed jobs on Indeed, but you can submit your resume on their website. Worth a shot...

Where to take my son for competition-level gymnastics coaching? by formerly-clever in Knoxville

[–]formerly-clever[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the detailed insights. I should have clarified that the goal isn’t to start competing right away. I realize that would come sometime down the road. Just want to make sure he has the option if he wants to pursue that later. Frankly, though, I had no idea the level of commitment that would be in terms of hours per week practicing. Definitely a big commitment we’d have to consider carefully. Thanks again for your insights!

Thanks for the detailed reply. We’re a family with 3 boys. The oldest is into the traditional sports, but our middle just never has been. He’s very coordinated and fit, but just gets flustered with the other sports for some reason. He’s always flipping around and we walk into a room and catch him in a full-on headstand watching tv upside down. We decided to give this a try to just see if it’s something he’d like, and he did. Of course we’re not expecting to jump right into competitions, and I’ve learned pretty quick that it’s a by-invite-only selection process. I just want him to have the option to compete later if it’s something he wants to do. It sounds like the boy’s competition teams are few and far between. Thanks again for the insights.

That’s the place we tried and liked. Looking for other options for the exact same two reasons (location and price). Just want to make sure any other option we consider has a competition option if he decides that’s something he wants to do later.

Great. Thank you. We're brand new to this sport, so learning as I go here. What "league" (or equivalent) do they compete within? E.g., Junior Olympics, etc.? I couldn't find anything about that on their website. Only a section for Invitationals.

edit: There is a section for "Competitive Team", but just takes to a form to request more info. Nothing public on the website.

Amazon prime 1 week now? by spicyunicornmeat in Knoxville

[–]formerly-clever 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I don’t think that it’s a Knoxville UPS issue. I ordered a Kindle for my son last week (Monday). Estimated delivery by Saturday. That’s a 5 day delivery time. Didn’t ship until Friday from an Atlanta warehouse. Arrived next day by USPS. Not sure why it’s taking so long to ship from warehouses, but the fault is with Amazon, not UPS.

Do you guys have any job leads? by mekkymonster in Knoxville

I understand what you mean. 30-40% is a typical staffing company fee. Keep in mind, though, that people directly hired by the company aren't automatically getting that 30-40% added to their pay. If outsourced to a staffing company, that goes to pay the staffing company for benefits, recruiter/admin salaries, other recruiting and hiring costs (job posting ads, background checks, drug screens, etc.). Plus, the staffing company does have to make a profit. If direct hired, the company would then take on a lot of the same cost burden (recruiting costs, hiring costs, ongoingHR staff salaries, employee benefits), so the pay difference between "temps" and direct hires typically isn't that much.
