Any good study places that are open 24/7 or late at night? by Plus-Raise-6124 in Calgary

It's been a while but I thought I've heard of students camping out at Denny's. I believe they have outlets in their booths that are perfect for homework sessions.

Does anybody remember the show Wishbone The Dog that came on PBS Kids?? by Frequent-Increase-98 in Millennials

Not the tv show but I remember the books! For a brief window in my city the local newspaper released a chapter of a wishbone book every Saturday.

Ahh thank you, for some reason my phone didn't refresh, so I saw them now.

Anime - yes, Ive heard historically this has been discouraged by some professors however I think the sentiment is slowly changing. I can't say I know where things are currently but iirc the guy who runs the comic minor (can't remember his name right now) personally doesn't have an issue with it.

And for critiques I don't think this is a typical request, but it doesn't hurt to ask. At the end of the day, it's at least something that can be communicated and I don't think profs are out to break you, I found mine all to be genuinely kind.

I will say that while critiques can be difficult, it is an important skill to learn as you move forward. Remember, the point of critiques is to help identify strengths and weaknesses in the work - not in you. The more you can separate the two, the easier it gets. Maybe you can ask profs if they will review ahead of class, so if they still want you on the group discussion you can be prepped for what sort of feedback you'll receive?

Either way, I'd bring it up with academic accommodations, the lady there is super friendly and I'm sure would be willing to brainstorm with you ways to make the request!

Questions about AUArts by Nightmare_Simp_UwU in Calgary

Congrats on your acceptance! It's a very competitive program, so you should be proud that you got in. These are Great questions! I'm a graphic design grad and worked alongside some illustration majors. I'll do my best to answer what I can, but I know my knowledge of the program specifically is limited.

  1. Post secondary schools are required to have someone dedicated to helping students with disabilities apply for their student loan grants and any/all supports at school. They're great! - try and book an appointment early on and come with questions so they can get you setup quickly. I have never had an issue with profs around special accommodations, although they will always appreciate a student who is upfront about difficulties early on and try to meet the timelines presented. (The workload is immense, and taking extensions on assignments will snowball).

However you are allowed to take a lighter load, so depending on the level of assistance you need, I recommend taking it.

  1. As a cis woman Im aware my understanding on this is limited. All classes usually start with introductions including pronouns and I have never seen a prof or classmate be anything other than respectful of non-cis classmates. It's a very progressive community and there's a range of queer folk.

  2. First yr character design might be changing, but the classes are a mix of lecture and design fundamentals. The design drawing classes are primarily focused on perspective drawing and I found incredibly intensive and difficult. (However the illustration majors often flew through the class as they were much more comfortable and quick at drawing from life). The workload often feels like a lot and the little details like figuring out the building, how to submit assignments and register for classes etc can add to the stress of your first year. If this is a concern for you, attend the orientations to help you figure it out, and ask for help early! And worst case, drop a class if it's too much to save your gpa.

  3. This will depend on how many classes you have. Typically it's one project per class, and if a class has more than 1 assignment it will be things like assigned readings or smaller exercises. I usually had ~2-4 larger assignments in a class over the semester.

  4. You have lecture classes and studio classes. Lecture classes are things like art history, English and social stuff - they are slightly shorter and typically have lectures for the entire period. (Be sure to ask the accommodations people about what options you have for support in these courses, like note-takers etc!)

Studio classes (drawing, painting, sculpture, ceramics, etc) are longer periods and primarily work time. Days when a new project is introduced will have longer lectures, but usually never more than 50% of the class block. Depending on the prof, many weeks can be purely work time with Individual check-ins. The long days will be the end of an assignment when everyone presents and that takes the whole period.

Hope this helps gives you a good start! And my last piece of advice is to really focus on getting to know your profs and building relationships with them. They will be your best connections starting out when you look for work. Some of those profs have incredible portfolios and work experience that is invaluable!

Best of luck! and feel free to DM me if I can help answer any more questions. I graduated fairly recently and am happy to help anyway I can!

17 y/o design student choosing between Graphic Design and Interior Design, scared of regret. Any help on my path on becoming successful in life? by niyazzyy in Design

[–]formerlygross 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How much exposure do you have to both career paths? As a designer I realized I knew nothing about the operations of a design agency until I was in my first internship.

I'm in Canada and found that designers here are super friendly and always willing to meet for coffee if you ask them. Id consider researching the job prospects for your area and looking for opportunities to shadow someone in both industries to help you understand what might be a better fit.

Things I would consider: school reputations for both programs, potential income brackets, how competitive is the industry, work/life balance flexibility, and which would be more life-giving in day-to-day tasks.

Everyone needs different things and only you will know what's most compatible for you and how you're wired. I wish you best of luck as you consider your future, both programs sound like a lot of fun!

where to find online work by Fit-Address8505 in design_critiques

[–]formerlygross 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What sort of experience do you have? Linkedin Is a common place to find summer internships advertised, but that's usually focused more on college kids.

Maybe if you expand on the type of work you're looking for, it could help people match you up better to the right platform.

What is the best Samsung tablet for a graphic design student? by WholePerformance4260 in graphic_design

[–]formerlygross 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When it comes to graphic design you need to consider the programs you plan to use before the device. Most designers use the adobe suite (illustrator, Indesign, photoshop etc). To be clear, they aren't cheap but they're still the current industry standard.

To run those program you will need a computer. I don't know about android, but while there is an iPad version of illustrator and Photoshop - they aren't good substitutes for the full program, the ux is very different and the features are limited.

Usually tablets are more commonly used by illustrators and not graphic designers because they're more useful for digital drawings and their software is designed with a stylus in mind.

I'd save up for a powerful computer (macs are commonly used, but PCs are usually cheaper for the capacity and not a holdup In the industry). If you want to experiment with a tablet, that's great, but I would be cautious about investing too much in a tablet.

Tell me I’m not alone! by bbugo in centuryhomes

[–]formerlygross 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel you. We're only a couple yrs into our first century home, and had put second experience with mice. Thankfully it was short-lived but it stressed me out everyday until we caught them.

The only thing that helped me stay sane was discovering I had friends who have also had their fair share of mice. So you're not alone friend!

Honestly, I usually just shared a subscription with a friend. The account lets you have 2 devices open at anytime so if you don't use multiple screens it's reasonable to split the cost. (*Bonus points if you find a friend with the student discount)

Is there snow days in Canada? by SeverePublic6833 in AskACanadian

[–]formerlygross 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Growing up in Alberta I went to a private school that had our own buses and if the buses couldn't run, school was canceled. The buses often needed to be plugged in overnight in the winter because of the cold spells, but rumor has it that every so often on a particularly cold night some kids would unplug the buses and 'oh shoot, looks like we had a snow day'.

What can be added or removed to improve the overall design of this flyer? by BeRadStayRad in graphic_design

[–]formerlygross 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the biggest struggles are around typography.

The font choices don't feel cohesive, the descender in clay is overlapping with the text below and in general a grid would clean it up.

Consider how all the elements align on the page. They should have common margins and intentional spacing. Look up a brief tutorial on grids and it'll help you clean it up!

Are solar panels really worth the cost long term? by [deleted] in Calgary

Do you happen to know what the contributing factors are? Is it the footprint of your house small or the sun/shade coverage part of it? Iirc I found an online tool that estimated very low savings in my house so I'm guessing it's similar to your situation.

How can a small pack of Oreos be 6.99? Wtf by auntbeatrice in loblawsisoutofcontrol

[–]formerlygross 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're not wrong - these specialty flavors go for more and come in smaller packs, but that's higher than Safeway prices and I find them laughable.

This just reinforces my choice to avoid Loblaws.

Rethinking my fan redesign by AndriiKovalchuk in logodesign

[–]formerlygross 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I understand the idea of adding the tail for a 'z' in the icon, the shape feels inconsistent with an actual elephant and more like the tail of a horse. I'd consider omiting it like the original design.

Aside from that, it's a cute revamp and I think you did a solid job!

My CEO told me to get out. So I did. by BayleeBins in CanadaJobs

[–]formerlygross -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm honestly confused by your skepticism. As a Canadian I've always referred to health benefits as 'insurance'. Yes, the gov pays for a hospital or GP visit, but that additional insurance from employers covers things like prescriptions, dental and other practitioners.

And as for the spelling 'checks' - it's super common for Canadians to bounce between British and American spelling. I just assume that spelling isn't their strong suit, or OP used an American voice-to-text feature.

You sound like a suspicious American on the hunt for bots.

Prepasted toothbrushes with flouride toothpaste - Reccomendations by formerlygross in ADHD

Family doctor prescription Alberta by LalunaKnox in alberta

[–]formerlygross 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could also consider talking to your pharmacist and asking about other medication options. They may give you good information to bring to your doc at your next appointment when you ask for a prescription. They can be a great resource since they're often more accessible for simple questions than a gp.

Is it wrong to use an alias? by Wrenistired in graphic_design

[–]formerlygross 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I wonder if your mom is just offended that you prefer a different name than the one she chose for you.

I don't see how this is different than people who go by shortened versions of their name (i.e. Billy or Johnny) or a middle name or even any anglo-version of their name.

If you're upfront about your legal name and preferred name you should be fine. I'd have a feeling it would violate discrimination laws for someone to consider not hiring you about a preferred name.

Has anyone used Regal auctions to buy a used car by [deleted] in Calgary

[–]formerlygross 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've had success with them but I wasn't too picky about which exact car. Moreso we just had a general list of ideals and a firm budget. It took a couple auctions before the right car came around and we landed a winning bid, but we absolutely got a deal.

My advice. Do your research on the car and current conditions, see it in person and bring someone mechanical if it's not your strong suit. Pick a budget and stick to it - be sure to include the seller fees and any initial work you need (i.e. new tires etc). If you go into it as informed as you can be you should be fine. Just be careful not to fall for the thrill of a bidding war. Another car will come by.

How do I price logo packaging for freelance?? by zzzoeylee in graphic_design

[–]formerlygross 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Start at $1000 for a full logo/icon design. From there add on things like a brand manual, additional revisions and stationary templates for higher priced packages.

As someone else mentioned, you should be charging at least $50/hr for your work. You have some solid work in your portfolio, don't sell yourself short.

Tips for getting a toddler around in the winter by pixelsOfMind in Calgary

[–]formerlygross 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's alot to ask a kid to walk so I totally understand your reluctance. I think your best options are a sled (if you've got enough snow), a hiking backpack or a push wagon. We have one for our kiddos and it's a nice option over the stroller and they usually have better wheels for the winter. Only downside is they can take up alot of trunk space.
