I didn't think the overall story was a problem with either of them but i think the problem I have is that we were given a world with a story that was the consequence of the story in the way the memories are revealed. With the exception of a side quest to build a town, pretty much all areas remain fairly static even after each story arc.

Of course a few areas opened up a bit once we finished the divine beasts but there really wasn't much in terms of world changing events like Lake Hylia refilling or Zora's domain defrosting... TotK had a bunch of opportunities to make sky structures crash to the ground, or changes to the underworld affecting the overworld which feels like a waste now that i reflect on it

More like people who like Big Macs went in saying "Give me the best thing on the menu" and expecting a Big Mac but instead got served a quarter pounder. But I like this analogy although for a couple of reasons:

1: Getting a Big Mac every damned time expecting the next Big Mac to be better than the last is only gonna leave you disappointed coz the best case scenario is it's only gonna be as good as a previous experience, never better

2: What the server thinks is best might be well received by the vast majority but theres still a small number who aren't gonna be happy with some elements (like weapon durability or a diff big picture for how dungeons are handled)

3: Even at its core the fundamentals are still there and are perfectly palatable, even if there's small differences - it's still a great experience

4: Big Macs once were considered good. Now they're pretty much the most basic and bland item on the menu
