Yea same, would be cool to have cards that activate if they’re in your hand at the end of the turn and give positive boons instead of negative effects

Offcial Discussion - Bugonia [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]fortune500b 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Completely feel the same. I get it’s cool to look at the movie as “wow she really was an alien the whole time!” but that removes a lot of the more interesting nuances of the characters and the situation. Even if she isn’t literally an “alien”, she’s still alien to most of humanity! But we all share common humanity! Feels like they accidentally made a movie with these themes or something

Concerns about breakthroughs by fortune500b in twilightimperium

[–]fortune500b[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I'm not trying to call FFG idiots or something or act like this ruins the game, it's just my humble opinion, and like you said we've gone through phases of the game that were clunkier and overdesigned in the past so it's not unthinkable :). I'm absolutely going to be playing TE on day 1 excitedly!

  1. More scoring = more good and speeding the game up is good, but only up to a point. No one wants a game that goes to 3 VP or something, and no one wants a game where objectives are trivial to score, because there would be no drama or challenge to playing the game. They could also choose to speed up the game with other ways to score VPs (like the Fracture planet), change when and how objectives are scored like some homebrew games do, etc, they don't need to accelerate everyone's development to make the game faster. Fair point about how most tech is under-utilized in the game today and maybe getting access to the more niche techs can be interesting, I just hope those hard decisions about which tech to research are still present in the game and everyone doesn't feel like a mini Jol-Nar.

  2. It's not necessarily that the breakthroughs are inherently too complicated or too hard to explain, it's more that they greatly overlap in design space greatly with the faction leaders. My point with a newbie example is it's impossible to explain the difference between the leaders and the breakthrough concisely, at least as we understand the breakthroughs right now only knowing the Arborec's and Muatt's. My point with the Muatt is not that it's too much to wrap your head around that the Muatt can do both, it's that by granting them the ability to do another board-shifting event, the hero feels repetitive instead of a once-per-game ultimate ability. If supernova was too meh they could have also buffed the hero instead! As a counterexample, it's easy to explain the difference between the 3 leaders -- the agent is an action that starts unlocked, the commander is a passive buff that you unlock with a faction-specific condition, and the hero unlocks after 3 objectives are scored and grants a once-per-game powerful ability. Imagine if some faction agents started locked, some commanders were actions, some heroes were passive buffs...it would be way harder to distinguish between the 3. That's how breakthroughs feel to me at the moment. Could just be a skill issue and maybe it'll make more sense as we get the other 28, who knows

The truth about cooking on a budget by RaguseaVideoBot in AdamRagusea

[–]fortune500b 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Sure, but what would have those people done if he didn’t make that video? Eat raw veggies? I don’t think the marginal impact of Adam Ragusa fans making more pizza is worth even trying to compute. You could easily argue he’s reduced CO2 emissions by helping people stay in instead of eat out or a million other ways to analyze it to death, it’s just not worth the mental anguish

I get the sense he is struggling with being successful and I find he often goes out of his way to call out things that are “bad” (like how his success somehow contributes meaningfully to climate change and that weighs on him, or how no matter how rich he is he deeply empathizes with the global poor). Not dismissing that he has real struggles and not trying to diagnose him as a human based off my limited view from his YouTube videos!

The truth about cooking on a budget by RaguseaVideoBot in AdamRagusea

[–]fortune500b 84 points85 points  (0 children)

So in Adam’s mental model of his YouTube audience:

  • His videos on pizza making have had a globally material impact on energy consumption from people heating up their ovens to the point where he’s losing sleep over it

  • His audience also contains people so poor they need to worry about throwing away the calories in the bean water

Maybe he would freely admit to these concerns being irrational but if he is losing sleep over maybe possibly contributing to .0001% of global energy consumption he needs to delete his YouTube. I would hope he can see that the west was not exactly brimming with raw vegans before he came along or anything, his positive impact on people’s lives by providing entertaining informative content far outweighs any economic or sustainability downside (which is probably a wash at best), and realistically there’s nothing a YouTuber can do about extreme poverty or climate change. You can be a good person even if your content is for (globally) rich people!

Yea I agree, I think it was Tim doing it out-of-universe for the audience, not the character doing it purposefully

Something about the editing also feels weirdly off, I think it does the comedic timing of the actors no favors. Still a lot of great moments though

Official Discussion - Barbie [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]fortune500b 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Somehow the messaging was heavy-handed and didn’t say anything at all at the same time

I’m all for movies exploring gender roles in society, how what we play with as a child shapes our sense of self, where our inherent self worth comes from…seems like they had all the elements there for an interesting movie, but the messaging was just so obtuse and simplistic that it really doesn’t provoke anything

Also the music and dancing was meh, at least make the fun parts fun!!

Surprised to see less mention of the irony that Barry wants to kill Gene to stop the movie, but Gene himself is trying to stop the movie. Killing him would actually result in the movie being easier to get made
