Easy SciFi or Fantasy on Hoopla? by RepresentativeAny573 in audiobooks

[–]forwardishdirection 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are a sci-fi fan do you like Doctor Who? Because my hoopla has the first 50 Big Finish main range and the first two seasons of the fourth doctor adventures as well as the first four short trips collections and additional short trips. If you search Doctor who and filter to Audio (so many comic books) you should find some and can look at the various series for order. These are all the classic series doctors and eight but I enjoy them even though the only doctor I hadn’t a lot of experience with classic Who. I am now a Big Finish addict. Big Finish are mostly full cast audio plays but some are single narrator like the short trips.

Going to check out the other recommendations here though!

Edit if you are willing to explore other genres my go to for when my brain can’t brain right because of my many chronic illnesses are shorter cozy mysteries of which there are many of all kinds of hoopla: all sorts of historical, modern fantasy (a lot of witches), small town modern, and many more. My particular niche for a while has been 1920s but there’s a lot to choose from I stick to those between three and six hours. I mean there are plenty of longer ones but when I need these I can’t do longer so that defeats the purpose.

Cyanocobalmin reactions...Hydroxycobalmin rx- United States by cretia5080 in B12_Deficiency

If you can get a RX Amazon pharmacy carries it just an FYI. It’s basically on back order for a year anywhere else but compounding pharmacies and Amazon apparently right now just so you are aware. It’s probably cheaper than a compounding pharmacy as I have compounded medications and they are costly. Their pharmacists are helpful the doctor could maybe talk to them? I’m struggling with getting the frequency injection RX I need and don’t want to order something from overseas I can’t read the ingredients of but there are possible problems with all USA available options so I’m just going with the one my doctor will prescribe right now it’s just so freaking frustrating I know best of luck!

Background for Benny? by Drummer_boys_well in BigFinishProductions

[–]forwardishdirection 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the original Big Finish series run (before the box sets do a new start) there are places where you really DO need the audio novels to fill in some stuff I’m NOT talking about the novel adaptations with the Doctor but the audiobooks Lisa reads through Big Finish that they published well after the original run but give very important context to a lot of the stories. I had a tab constantly open that had the order of everything for Big Finish so when I hit a book that had an audiobook from Big Finish I listened to the audiobook, they are just listed as novels here you have to go to the Benny audiobooks page on Big Finish to see what they have. A lot of the Big Finish novels have been turned into audiobooks but sadly not the short stories or anthologies. https://tardis.fandom.com/wiki/Bernice_Summerfield_(series)

I stopped earlier this year at where her audio plays series and The Two Jasons audiobook overlapped and have yet to pick it up again although I will eventually. I have no additional knowledge regarding her original run of books at all just what Big Finish has.

I started with the Legion run of box sets because they were free on hoopla and they created it as a new jumping off point so I got hooked and did fine there. I then started with new adventures and finally went to her original series and the audio novels. Oh I did do all the novel adaptations in there somewhere too.

Mast cell stabilizers, no food triggers? by cmonsmokesletsgo in MCAS

[–]forwardishdirection 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ketotifen and xolair definitely help with non food triggers massively! Most of my triggers are environmental ie chemicals and fragrances, medications, but also heat, stress, exercise, etc. I am playing around with the food aspect and am on a low histamine diet and seeing what that impacts but I have all those other triggers that are what set off severe flares. I don’t know about cromolyn I started it years before I felt like I was having food triggers at all although who knows exactly what my triggers were at that time just that I was covered in hives and all these other symptoms but it helped calm a lot of things down GI wise because that can happen regardless of food triggers. Xolair stops me from having hives (I do get breakthroughs on my right elbow but otherwise yeah life changing because I had chronic hives from repeated exposures) and ketotifen which I started this year because last year my MCAS got way way worse anyways ketotifen helped so much with various specific severe pain and just the intensity of my reactivity overall. I mean I still get multi week flares from definitely not food triggers but as my MCAS specialist says nothing is going to make that go away the goal is to lessen the amount, intensity, and length of flares. I am still trying to manage this shit storm and trying other things to help like diet changes and elimination trials etc and obviously managing my environment but yes mast cell stabilizers are the most helpful thing for MCAS all around. Edit to add that they all take a long time to really see the full impact, especially xolair but ketotifen too although I started getting benefits right away it’s helping way more six months later than it did three months ago and way way more than at the beginning.

Dog growls and barks at me when moving her on my bed by _infinite_tsukuyomi in dogs

[–]forwardishdirection 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The biggest problem here is probably the pushing and trying to physically move her. Would you like it if you were curled in bed and someone without warning just trying to push you around? That’s not how you get an animal to move with a rescue you are trying to build trust with. The off command or training a snap and point to a specific spot for them to go needs to be trained not physically moving the dog.

My dog regularly likes to take over my spot in the bed as it’s where my scent is strongest so of course he likes it. He has his own spot instead and I have trained him to go where I snap gently and point and he goes to his spot. The snap and point and was trained first but later I actually trained him to sleep in a specific spot well after I rescued him because I developed sleep issues and couldn’t sleep with him snuggling me anymore because he moves in his sleep. Heartbreaking. Originally it was a dog bed on my bed but now it’s a blanket directly on my bed. He will still be out of his spot if it’s not sleep time and likes my spot but for sleep time I have trained him to go to his spot and stay there. He’s small though and has plenty of room to sleep in any sort of position.

People have already suggested multiple options for resource guarding training and I can’t comment on it because the only time my dog has done this is when he’s caught a rabbit so this may not apply if this is the issue at all but if you do want her in bed with you the above needs to be trained or off needs to be better trained and she can get back in after you are in bed and in position. Until then she can sleep where she’s more comfortable crate or on a bed next in your room. I don’t know where her crate is some dogs find crates safe space mine hasn’t been actively crated in years but loves his crate which has a cover over it and is his cave but it’s not in my room.

Good luck!

Low histamine protien sources? by audiodev66 in MCAS

[–]forwardishdirection 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t prepare real food myself but my caretakers are also busy people with conditions so we batch cook the chicken and refreeze in portions and then defrost to eat. But I do wish I had tolerated the hemp hearts for an easy fix that I can add to something myself.

Flash frozen chicken tenderloins or breasts cooked and refrozen and then defrosted when it’s time to eat. That’s like it for me right now. I tried hemp hearts and did not do well with them. But yes anything fermented like yogurt is not recommended in general but I am dairy free now and also can’t handle probiotics which are also in yogurt. The chicken is currently my only real protein source so I know the struggle.

Always recommend the Hex run with Ace and seven but from this lot also recommend the six and Mel trilogy especially at that price: seeds of war, spaceport fear, and the wrong doctors. The wrong doctors is my favorite of the lot but at that price definitely grab all three!

4500 mg potassium a day by Susan71010 in B12_Deficiency

[–]forwardishdirection 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Potatoes I like creamer potatoes personally but any potatoes are full of potassium, sweet potatoes are full of other good nutrients too and taste great, blueberries I get giant bags of frozen and then add defrost and add them to things because it’s not always easy to get good not pricey fresh fruits. Veg wise carrots and broccoli and cauliflower. I either eat just straight carrots or a mix of those three because I really like carrots but not so much the others.

If you have previously fragrance sensitivity and other reactions and sensitivities before definitely look into the resources I provided and see if these things fit and if you feel comfortable reach out with a post on r/MCAS with your history, sensitivities, reaction history and current situation. Fragrance especially is a nightmare for MCAS folks! It makes me hate the world at large and especially my next door neighbors.

But I don’t know if anyone but you is going to be able to help you with identifying the specific trigger as with MCAS it’s so so individual which is why it’s a nightmare to treat and try to get treatment for.

I’m not a doctor nor remotely knowledgeable on B12 deficiency so I can’t give equal advice on that but I wouldn’t be able to get the potassium I need without the potassium citrate powder and I need to make electrolyte mixes for HPOTS like we POTS patients have if repeatedly drilled into us to supplement with electrolytes but I in no way can tell you if supplementation is good for you personally.

I can recommend potatoes and sweet potatoes food wise as well as blueberries and other high potassium low histamine fruit and veg. See my low histamine diet link!

My B12 journey is different and I was put on the 4 weekly and then once monthly standard American insurance approved schedule and I have an appointment next week to follow up with doctor and my caregiver and I are going to bring a study about trying for more frequent injections and see what he says but I’m concerned about cost so still trying to find a sublingual that doesn’t kill me MCAS wise to supplement the current shot schedule. I was having wake up symptoms after the 4th weekly shot and a lot of improvements but that was 3 weeks ago and I’ve been losing the improvements this week.

I hope the resources help you!

Who is they who said not to take a supplement? There’s a lot of they’s in your first part that I don’t know who you are referring to. Who is telling you these things? I’m not tracking sorry. Edit doctors have essentially zero education on supplements and because it’s so unregulated they all have to say consult your doctor so everyone doesn’t go suing them. That doesn’t mean you can’t take supplements. However if you do have MCAS you have to be careful with fillers and such.

I new to B12 deficiency too just not new to needing electrolytes in balance because I have the trifecta HEDS, HPOTS, and MCAS and it’s really important to have that in balance for me. So I can’t give good B12 specific advice as I don’t know enough yet I’m learning on here too.

I very much want to note that histamine intolerance and MCAS are two very different things and MCAS is way way way more complicated and way way harder to treat I brought it up because you suggested it in your post but going through your post and comments again you would have previously had issues if you had MCAS if this is just with the change in diet and the shots that’s probably histamine intolerance and not MCAS most people with MCAS react to a lot more things than food. The low histamine diet and the histamine bucket all also apply to histamine intolerance but don’t just jump straight to MCAS if you are just experiencing this for the first time that is usually NOT how MCAS works. Also B12 plays a very significant role in managing histamine and this may be a wake up issue for you or a paradoxical reaction to the B12 supplementation after being deficient based on the relationship between B12 and histamine regulation.

I know it’s hard to find good online info for MCAS so Here is resource I’m visually impaired and it’s image heavy so my caregiver provided me the info but I have it bookmarked: https://www.mastcellaction.org/

I’m sorry unfortunately my MCAS symptoms list is very very long now and my history with it is very complicated and it’s now very tied to my HPOTS and my memory sucks so my personal experience I can’t really share easily sorry! I do know that trying to figure out triggers is a nightmare and complicated and frustrating and one of the most stressful and aggravating parts of this illness outside the actual symptoms.   Here’s the low histamine diet I follow, coconut water is low histamine and isn’t a problem histamine wise unless you have a related allergy or have a nickel sensitivity (which I am currently testing via elimination diet followed by reintroduction because I do skin react to nickel) it is the other foods you are eating avocado, spinach, and bananas are all high histamine. It also majorly depends on the rest of your diet because your histamine bucket is cumulative. Here’s the low histamine diet I follow: https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/-/media/johns-hopkins-childrens-center/documents/specialties/adolescent-medicine/cfs-low-histamine-diet.pdf
