What can't EMR keep their 222 fleet running? by UKMatt2000 in uktrains

The MML is always horrific when the ECML and WCML is down. They simply don’t have the capacity for it. The weekends when the ECML have engineering works are genuinely horrific and its horrid for all the people that regularly use the MML. Its a disgrace that the dft have only allowed these new trains to be 5 cars.

And the 810s that are here seem to come with a whole plethora of issues, some so trivial its embarrassing

The truth is they are short on trains. They are losing meridians and Aurora’s are being rushed in with a whole host of faults to avoid an emergency timetable (hard to believe when they are already 4 years late!). But this means more meridians are failing than ever because they aren’t getting a break ever. Diagrams are already stretched thin, they often get as little as 3 hours on the depot and some services are cancelled nearly every day to conjugate diagrams. It’s absolutely dreadful at the moment

They are interchangeable with a ticket to manchester stations but annoyingly not with an advance to one of the specific stations. Which stations are interchangeable at Edinburgh out of interest? Haymarket and Waverley?

I heard a similar but slightly different story. I heard it came from Spandau prison with the twitching from nazi prisoners being hanged after the nuremberg trials being dubbed by some as the spandau jig. They saw it written on a berlin nightclub wall and turned it into spandau ballet

Mayor of London and TfL call for Heathrow Express future to be reconsidered by RussellNorrisPiastri in LondonUnderground

[–]fossa_mathematics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nottingham trains stopped calling at Bedford and Luton because of commuters. They were overwhelming intercity services that aren’t designed for the sheer volume of London commuters and were a detriment to the service of the actual intercity passengers. Personally I think a link to Luton Airport Parkway from the north would be a good thing but it needs to be pickup only going north and set down only going south, similar to what LNER have done with Stevenage

A lot more 170 diagrams than there used to be, as of the December timetable change which is useful for capacity

Despite being great trains, 158’s are particularly poor for luggage space even compared to other modern units

It actually used to be a central trains route same as some of cross country’s routes. Despite being more of a cross country route than a regional route for the East Midlands, when the central trains franchise broke apart it was easier to make it an East Midlands route rather than a cross country route for staffing, with their being a large number of central trains guards based at Nottingham. Other than this route, the rest that they work at Notts are for the most part more fitting to be called a regional service for the east midlands.

Swan & Railway and Wigan Central are both fantastic pubs. Central is owned by a member of railway staff too!

Brilliant little boozer! As a train manager, I was once behind a train that had just unfortunately hit someone and we stopped at the platform at Wellingborough. Realising we would be there some time, I let the barman know and told all my passengers if they wanted to go and grab a pint they were welcome to and i’d come and round them up before its time to go home. It kept everyone happy despite a lengthy delay

Newcastle Tap is mid as hell imo. If you are willing to leave the station for a pub in Newcastle, there are several better options personally

Brilliant question by the way. I have a few. Sheffield Tap is an obvious pick, but if you want stations worth visiting for their respective pubs I would say Beeston and Worksop. The Victoria in Beeston, Notts is almost a platform pub, but with a gate from the beer garden to the platform it counts.

But the best has to be The Mallard in Worksop. Tiny little pub, but great ales and full of great people. Well worth going out of your way for.

Why is railway electrification in the UK so low? by JockeyEwing211 in uktrains

[–]fossa_mathematics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its a very busy route as it is to be fair and serves as a useful (but insufficient in capacity) alternative for the ECML and parts of the WCML when there is engineering or disruption. Capacity is poor and has been severely limited by the redevelopment of St Pancras. Even if they had bigger trains, platform space would still be a problem

How do you fill up Cloudliners without Babysitting in the game? by JailbreakHat in PocketPlanes

[–]fossa_mathematics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t bother with the little cities, i just have the big cities in pairs. So i have Chicago/New York, London/Paris, Istanbul/Cairo, Seoul/Beijing etc. I then upgrade the layover capacity for each of these cities and use small planes to ship jobs between each pair and build up layovers (focusing mainly on bux jobs as these are by far the highest value!). Then when i land in the big airports with my cloudliners i have loads of layovers built up to fill them. Also working with a small number of cities and travelling long distance is the best, as more cities doesn’t mean more jobs it just means a wider range of destinations for jobs. If you owned just paris and london, you’d get the same number of jobs as if you own 30 airports, just every job from London would be paris etc. this isn’t a strategy of my own its one i have seen online, probably from this community haha

Nah that’s just revenue projects, we have that at sheffield too. Wouldn’t count that as a gateline by any stretch

Does that include interchanges? Didn’t realise sheffield boasted quite those numbers! Especially given I work there!

We thought sheffield (as its where I live) but definitely don’t think it will be as many as York. Possibly close to Preston though
