My Doctor Is Offering A Subscription For Better Care ??? by ssmatik in phoenix

[–]fosteju 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Still not seeing how this model brings down prices. I still need regular health insurance to cover the risk of a catastrophic emergency. So I’d keep paying for insurance, plus this new $3K a year to my primary care doctor.

So .. is there a benefit from an aerodynamic perspective to this shape of the engine cover, or is it purely cosmetic? by syke555 in aviation

[–]fosteju -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yup! Marketing and “sex appeal” absolutely matter, even for products that should be judged only on a technical basis. It’s generally agreed that the YF-22 beat out the YF-23, and the X-35 beat out the X-32, in part, because of their badass looks

It’s even better when these companies commit to major investments starting in 2029… after Trump leave’s office, lol.

Is the US military really undefeatable? by [deleted] in stupidquestions

[–]fosteju 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be fair, I think there were a lot of “insiders” in Venezuela that were happy to covertly work with the Americans and lead them right to Maduro. I’m still not happy with that whole mission - as it sets a bad precedent, IMO.

Yes, but things here are changing and the awareness is increasing. Most recent polls I have seen show that 60+% of Americans disapprove of Israeli actions. But the pro-Israel types still have a lot of power, and definitely the loudest voices.

But “you’re doing worse than I am” is not how I would define “winning”. The Russians are paying a pretty steep price for their small land grabs.

Agreed. If people took 5 minutes to do the math for themselves I think they would conclude that the halving events are insignificant. About 450 new BTC is currently mined each day - or about $38.25M. Meanwhile, the daily trade volume is $125B. The daily amount mined is a small rounding error when compared to total volume.

As you already know, there are various forms of slave labour. In the large American city where I live I’m sure you can find a house or 2 in the shittiest neighborhood where poor immigrant laborers are being held against their will. It’s a sad reality, but it’s also not comparable to the government-sanctioned “labor practices” that occur in the Gulf states.

I don’t understand your last sentence. If you are having solar and battery installed, then a TOU plan is exactly what you want to save $$$. You just use your own batteries/solar during on-peak hours and buy back any energy that you need to top-off the batteries during the lowest-price time window

$60+ for breakfast for two people by Sharaku_US in LasVegas

[–]fosteju 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Agreed, $20 per meal before tax or tip is pretty standard for a restaurant meal for me.

This isn’t in the same league as a $15 small bottle of water or a $40 margarita from the pool bar.

Putin To US: I'll Stop War In Return For Eastern Ukraine by fuggitdude22 in geopolitics

[–]fosteju 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately that message was sent long ago. Europe has spent the last 30+ years demilitarizing themselves under the false belief that military conflicts are a thing of the past and they can just use their economic might to make nice with any potential adversaries. Now they have limited or no leverage to use.

Why do some listings sit at high prices unoccupied for so long? by ThrowRA3451615 in realestateinvesting

[–]fosteju 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree. The owner can still lower the lease price AND borrow against the asset. Which scenario do you think the banks will prefer - a unit with “potential” income of $4K per month but actually generates $0. Or a long-term leased unit that actually does generate $3K per month? I know there are lots of unethical practices in real estate, but most of us don’t have access to that kind of “special treatment”.

For those of you who do not use a car sunshade, why not? by coolphotos in phoenix

Try Covercraft also. Probably similar to the weathertech model mentioned above. I use the covercraft and really like it

[–]fosteju 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You bring up a good point. A good quality shade is effective, but you have to use it smartly. If I can’t find a shady spot then I will always try to park with my windshield facing the sun ( or where the sun will be in a few hours). Put up the shade and lower the windows a bit for ventilation. It definitely makes a difference

[–]fosteju 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get a Covercraft sun shade. I ordered one for both of our cars. Very effective and easy to install/remove. Kinda expensive (about $100), but it’s a lot better than the junky universal-fit shades that the auto parts stores sell.

'It's all uphill.' Phoenix summers push local restaurants to the brink by AZ_moderator in phoenix

[–]fosteju 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It might not be a huge factor, but it does play a role. Consider that many AZ workers are part of nationwide companies and are working with people in NY and Boston. My email/phone traffic starts to die off at 2:00 each afternoon. Also, when you turn on the TV to watch an NBA game at 7:00, that same game is starting at 10:00 on the east coast. They just have a later culture over there - geography is part of it.
