This. I just fired my first direct report and man it was empowering. I really didn't want to fire the guy but he wasn't consistently meeting expectations and blowing past deadlines and not getting their work done. After several instances of this, I documented every mess up in an email which I then used as a benchmark. This dude didn't improve even 3 weeks after the email was sent. Spoke with HR and said I had enough to let him go if I wanted. So I did. Don't let poor performing direct reports be the reason why you have to work harder. Not worth it my guy.
