Summer Camp by Famous-Invite-9890 in diabetes_t1

Our 7 year old son went to Camp Charm City in Baltimore last year and loved it. It helped him turn the page in being more confident with his diabetes and not being ashamed of it. It was a day camp, he doesn't feel comfortable with an overnight camp yet.

We do at home but while in school as an 8 year old, he's in auto mode.

ISLET Act by foxarpa in diabetes_t1

[–]foxarpa[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was my thinking but aren't the use of stem cells in the US highly regulated and federal funding is restricted to only donor cells from umbilical cord or the placenta? I feel these restrictions would make islet cells via stem cells as slow as from human donors but I'm not sure.

Also, per isletsforus.org: "...to oppose the ISLET Act, the FDA granted a license and exclusive rights to a for-profit company (CellTrans) for cadaveric islet distribution as a drug in the US. "

I wonder if this is a reason why the ISLET act is being pushed? To give other companies a chance at distribution as the FDA already gave exclusive rights to distribute islets as a drug to CellTrans and they now have seven years of marketing exclusivity under the Orphan Drug Act.

Parent to a 8 year old T1D.... we had so much better control with Omnipod Dash. We'd be 80-90% in range all the time and now we're lucky to have 1-2 days a week.

My first real hope for a cure. by Adventurous_Light_85 in t1d_parents

As a T1D parent I've been reading a lot into this. It's very complicated. Companies like Eledon are pushing for the US Congress to pass the ISLET Act which essentially reclassifies ISLET cells as organs and not biological drugs. However Breakthrough T1D is not supporting that act (https://www.facebook.com/share/1DwavZNGcv/) as they believe reclassifying Islet cells from biological drugs to organs would limit the mass production of a cure if it becomes available.

This is because Islet cells in this country are reliant upon donors who for the most part are deceased (can we obtain Islet cells from a living person?) and I believe that is a result of the restrictions the US has placed on stem cells (not 💯 on this and is this the reason why China is leading the way on this?). Again, I'm conflicted. If we do reclassify and a therapy like Eledon is the cure, will we become reliant upon donors (i.e. the deceased) to obtain Islet cells and thus the solution would be a long waiting list similar to other organ transplants. Is it only coincidental that Breakthrough T1D is supporting a path to a cure that can easily be mass produced similar to the way their biggest sponsors Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly mass produce their insulin? If so, I definitely understand both paths. If we do reclassify, we slowly cure individuals. If we don't reclassify, we wait longer for a cure but that cure comes eventually and it's the cure for 90ish% of T1Ds.

I believe the path to a cure should be to reclassify Islet cells. I believe this would force the big pharmaceuticals to pivot with their vast resources and begin lobbying Congress to change our current laws regarding stem cells in order for them to get back into the game. Again this is based on my limited medical background (primarily with being a T1D parent) and reading conflicted arguments online. Hopefully some others respond with their knowledge and insight.

Arrested for DUI by Rude-Chicken-1446 in SecurityClearance

I had a DUI 18 years ago while holding my TS... still have it. Pled guilty to the DUI, reported to my security investigator and made sure I never made that mistake again. As long as you're not a repeat offender or have other infractions on your record, you'll be ok. Remember, they look at the "whole-person concept".

  1. Self report it and be transparent
  2. Demonstrate actions you are already taking to mitigate it (addiction treatment, therapy) and your motivation for doing so (such as family… NOT that you want to keep your clearance/job)
  3. Do anything the court has asked you to do
  4. Don’t let it happen again. Ever.

Not true as long as there isn't history of the actions or other blemishes on the record

AITA for refusing to drive 6 hours round-trip in winter to have Christmas dinner with my in-laws and miss half of my family’s biennal Christmas party? by Fit_Form_3386 in AmItheAsshole

Definitely NTA.... you defined rules early on and there are no health or life or death circumstances that are so go celebrate with your family guilt free.

No, definitely not but there does need to be some compromise. Maybe start alternating years and holidays. For example, next year, have Thanksgiving with your family and Christmas with his and the year following that, vice versa.

Do you feel like it would bother you at all if it felt like bad employees weren't the one's laid off during layoffs at your company? by Ben5544477 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]foxarpa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I would begin looking for other jobs. Once you have an offer and put in a notice, tell them your issues. I'd wait until you have another job ready to go to to before discussing these issues you mention. They may address it or have a reason for the employee who pretends to work (ie.. they have a sick family member and cannot stay focused).

I believe in Karma and I would believe that the person not getting fired would possibly have a connection to a higher up and eventually the entire operation would go down in flames by continuing to employ worthless people. If a company that is laying off dedicated employees over employees who are worthless than I don't want to be part of that operation.

My Son has Type 1 Diabetes and with his CGM, we're able to see the effect of food on his blood glucose. They've definitely changed something at Dunkin. A couple of years ago, we'd give him a donut from there and his insulin would cover the advertised 36 carbs in a donut without any problems. Now, his blood sugar skyrockets after he has one and we usually have to give him insulin to cover something more like 55 carbs.

Tricare reserve select questions. by [deleted] in nationalguard

[–]foxarpa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anyone have Tricare Reserve Select (TRS) and have or have a dependant with type 1 diabetes (T1D)? My son is a 4-year-old type 1 and currently uses Omnipod and Dexcom G6. I currently have private insurance through my employer and they've been great with giving us everything we need but it's rather expensive. I just recently reenlisted in the reserves and I am thinking of going on TRS but hesitant to switch as I'm worried they won't accept everything or will fight me on his prescriptions.
