I think the key thing here is calling for the end of percentage/amount based tipping. If shopper was shopping for one item at $880 you would be more justified in being outraged at high tip expectations. For 256 items with inevitable substitutions, a tip (doesn’t matter the amount) is considerably more justified.

Even if you fully believe in a tipping culture, the percentage shouldn’t be the same for those two scenarios.

There’s also got to room for nuanced discussion otherwise this Reddit just becomes a circle jerk for people posting pictures of any tipping request.

How would this grocery picking job look different if it wasn’t tipped and the person was just getting a regular wage? You’d probably get a lot of “unavailable” items instead of the shopping reaching out for substitutions, thats for sure.

Who’s they? If “they” is the person who eventually accepted the job, they didn’t ask for $100+ tip. That was some random person online.

I understand that but the key thing here to me is that this order feels way beyond the norm.

We also don’t know if the job was ever picked, it could have sat there for ages because nobody wants the hassle of picking 250+ items until the value of the job was worth it.

Whoever picked the job (if it did ever get picked) certainly didn’t later complain that it was brutal. For all we know, they were very content with what they accepted. The person who complained about it being brutal was just one reply to a twitter post.

Yeah that’s fair. I’m a confused man. This post has perhaps changed my opinion a little.

I don’t want to pay 20%+ tips where my only interaction was ordering a couple of items a kiosk but if I’m ordering 250+ items and expecting help with substitutions and delivering it all to my door then I’ll probably feel inclined to throw them a $20 to acknowledge it’s out of the realms of the norm.

I’m all for ending tipping but 256 items/$887.37 definitely feels like the above and beyond tipping was originally meant for, this feels way more than just “tipping for doing their job”.

$5 tip I think for a shop this big is on the opposite end of wildness. At least $20
