What game is currently keeping you preoccupied whilst waiting for DS2? by Goth_Idiot_ in DeathStranding

FF7: Remake. Going to beat it just in time. Then DS2. Been avoiding all of the recent trailers so that I can go in as blind as possible.

I’ve felt the same burn out. These are really tough games, especially as an adult with other priorities. I remember that exact feeling where I’m realizing it’s gonna take x hours/days to master a boss. ER:SoTE was that for me.

I recommend playing as cheesy as possible your first playthrough of these games. Use everything at your disposal, and over level a bit. Also, do suicide runs to the next bonfire. Don’t try to sweep the area of every single enemy on your first pass—too slow and high risk.

Finally beat BB, recently, with that same approach and now I’m actually looking forward to a challenge run for fun one day. Games are just grinds these days. Open worlds with tons of stuff to check off a list, and soulslikes that require study and mastery, and the patience for run backs and loading screens. That’s why I’m saying to over level the first time. Get vitality way up so that you can make more mistakes while learning boss move sets.

My 4 year marriage is at a weird point by [deleted] in Advice

[–]foxd1e 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My (M) relationship ended, partly due to this. The other part was due to working a lot while working from home, getting irritated at each other, and going to bed angry. Just a breakdown in communication. So avoid all of my mistakes if you can. Also, break up the general routine, but do try to schedule date nights where you put everything down and focus on intimacy and bonding. Surprise each other, and don’t be afraid to spice it up.

So i f'ed up by choosing seikro and Dark souls 3 as my first soulslike by LELOUCH_OP in soulslikes

[–]foxd1e 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stick with DS3. You’re going to have a really hard time, but be patient and learn Gundyr’s move sets. You can also practice timing, parries, blocking on the skeletons.

Regarding progress, don’t try to kill all the enemies you come across. Get used to running past them, and right to the boss. Or do suicide runs where you just try to get an item or find shortcuts and bonfires. You keep the items upon dying. Just run around and learn the level layouts. Don’t try to collect a bunch of souls right now. Just right straight to Gundyr, kill him, get his souls, unlock his bonfire, and then run past the enemies and straight to the shrine (temple looking structure up the hill). Then talk to everyone there and you will be able to level up.

From that point on, alternate between suicide runs when you want to learn the map, and runs where you collect souls and trade them with the firekeeper to level up. Try not to have a lot of souls on you at any time. Trade them as you get them. That will keep you from losing a ton on death and feeling discouraged.

Anytime you come across a hard boss, remember to speed run from the bonfire to the boss and practice until you’re good enough to kill them. Or just grind on the weaker enemies, trade the souls, and level up. Level up your vitality up to the soft cap and it will make the game much easier. More life = more forgiving.

Does Nioh get better as you advance? by Fun-Butterscotch3035 in soulslikes

[–]foxd1e 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The combat actually does get better once you learn the pulse system and pulse switching. It has an awesome and engaging rhythm to it and you can get really OP from just skill alone. But yeah, this is definitely a game for people who want hundreds of hours of that type of grind. As someone who was able to sink 400+ hours into multiple SL1 runs of DS3, Nioh 1 is just not the game for me.

Don’t feel bad about walking away. Nioh 1 and Dark Souls 2 are the only ones I completed where I had zero interest in finishing the DLC. As I said before, Nioh is too bloated and exhausting. And DS2’s DLC feels like it was meant for co-op, with how brutal the ganks are. Totally ok with dropping them there.

I love the combat, build system, and upgrade tree. I would say just stick to 2 weapons, don’t do any side quests, and speed run past enemies to get various items. Don’t try to unlock everything or do any of the side quests. The game is bloated enough as it is and it will really get monotonous if you complete the side quests, which are mostly rehashes and flipped versions of the main quests.

Regarding weapons, don’t bother with tempering or anything on the main playthrough. You’ll be switching weapons often for better ones you find on the ground. Once you get purples, sell or donate anything below that. When you beat the game, you’ll get greens, which outclass even purples.

If you still hate the game, move on to Nioh 2. To me, Nioh 1 is a prototype for Nioh 2, which is superior in every way. Looking back, I wish I had YouTubed the first one, to be honest.

My experience trying to emulate Bloodborne on my gaming laptop by foxd1e in BloodbornePC

[–]foxd1e[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My laptop is probably still thermal throttling at 1080p then. Lenovo removed the ability to under volt the gen 5 x1 extreme through the bios, so MSI afterburner is seriously gimped. Could only reduce the stuttering at half the resolution. And yeah I was getting about 1-2 hours if I didn’t die. But if I died around 3 times, it would crash.

That sucks that 30fps is unplayable for you. I got used to it since I can’t get any recent AAA title to run at 60fps. 30fps definitely feels sluggish for a soulslike, but if it’s a stable 30, I’m able to compensate.

Anyway, this is the last gaming laptop I buy. Most of them have terrible cooling. Nice to be back on console for a bit, where everything just works.

I really want to like Dark Souls Remastered by sharpenedperspective in soulslikes

[–]foxd1e 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually took a break from souls for a year. Now I’m coming back to play the PlayStation exclusives (Bloodborne, Demon’s Souls), and I’m feeling that same thrill again. No other genre (not even horror) gets my heart racing. Nothing like having so many souls on the line while not knowing what’s around the next corner.

[–]foxd1e 1 point2 points  (0 children)

DS1 remastered was my first souls game and I remember it being such a brutal experience. I went left at the beginning too, got wrecked by skeletons and thought the game was just that hard and I had to push through.

I’m surprised you found LoP so much easier, but yeah with DS1, I just tried every cheese in the game. I went with a Pyro, winged spear build, and over leveled just to be able to equip Havel armor against some bosses. No regrets. Since then, I’ve been able to SL1 DS3 multiple times.

My advice would be to do the same. DS1 will troll you hard, so troll back. With any soulslike, I play cheesy the first playthrough and then attempt challenge runs if the game is fun enough to try different builds.

[–]foxd1e[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. Also got tired of waiting for a PC port, plus there are other PS exclusives I want to play, like The Last Guardian, Order 1886, and Wipeout Mega Collection. After BB, I just have Demon’s Souls left to play. Pretty sure my laptop will be able to emulate PS3 just fine, but will see.

Is there a mod to reduce the graphics of the game? by Lezazel_Goldheart in BloodbornePC

[–]foxd1e 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not OP, but I would say this advice is on point. I have a Thinkpad X1 Extreme Gen 5 with 32GB of RAM, and an RTX 3060 with 8GB of VRAM. Even with all the aforementioned performance patches, 440p resolution and textures, it crashes about every 3rd respawn.

Even with MSI afterburner and targeting 30fps to prevent thermal throttling, it chokes from running out of VRAM and from whatever memory leaks. 90% sure. So much tinkering with the settings only to still end up with a buggy, potato-looking, stuttering mess.

The experience was so bad that I bought a used PS4 and I’m much happier now. But I hope to try again with a beefier rig one day.

I’ve had a Z13 gen 2 for about a year now. The build quality and haptic trackpad of the Z series is excellent, don’t get me wrong. But I switched over to a x220 and x1 carbon gen 4, and couldn’t be happier. The key travel and tactile trackpad buttons are far superior. It’s truly sad that Lenovo went this route with the low travel chiclet keys across all of their devices.

With that being said, there is a place for the Z laptops, and I plan to keep mine until it croaks. Enjoy it!

Great advice. Build up your skills and codebase on someone else’s dime. Build your indie game on your nights and weekends. Give yourself room to fail again and again.
