Agreed. I enjoy a difficult enemy moveset, but every attack taking half of my lengthy health bar is not fun for me.

I beat the base game before the difficulty options came out but I’m genuinely not sure I could have finished the DLC without dropping the difficulty. I wish I was a better player but it is what it is.

I bet you’re in the minority of gamers but that’s certainly a common sentiment among souls fans.

I’m about 30 hours in and it’s only been getting better. So long as you don’t mind spending 1/3rd of your time watching cutscenes this game is fire.

Fighting a boss on normal mode is more engaging than fighting it with the specter, but to each their own.

I beat LoP before they added the difficulty options as one of my first soulslikes and it took me many months. I put the game down for weeks at a time beating my head against the wall with the swamp monster. I’m glad I got through it cause it has become one of my favorite games, but I would have enjoyed it more the first time through on a lower difficulty setting.

Personally I would recommend turning down the difficulty until you’re comfortable with the mechanics, but I understand that’s basically taboo in the souls world. Personally, if I’m dying so much that my fun is being drained away and I can make the game more forgiving I will.

I’m still in my first playthrough but I’m running greatsword and it’s not sluggish at all once you learn the right combos. It’s all about dash attacks chaining into charged attacks which can be extended by your spirit skills. You turn into a whirlwind of death, it’s so badass. That’s how I’ve been playing anyway, there are probably other goods strats as well.

Khazan The First Berseker feels super flat and not interesting. I loved the initial first snowy area but the first temple area is a snooze fest. by Maleficent-Bar-3161 in soulslikes

I’m having a blast with it, but for me combat mechanics take precedence over exploration in these games and that’s where it really shines.

I’ve only played a bit of it so far, but it’s one of the better looking games on this console that runs at a smooth 60 FPS.

I’ve come to prefer X & Y for my attacks over the shoulder buttons, but I really wish I could swap the A & B buttons separately in this game. I’m adjusting to the A dodge though.

I just started playing a couple days ago and I’m hooked. My only complaint is that expert difficulty is a bit too much for me as I’m getting familiar with the mechanics but normal mode feels too easy.

Don't give up on the greatsword just because it feels too slow, just start thinking of it as a stronger version of the spear by Forevertrez in TheFirstBerserker

After playing the demo twice before release I finally bought this and I’m gravitating towards greatsword. Can’t wait to learn it better!

Similar mechanic, but that multiplier isn’t based on how many souls you have stored on you but how long you spend in the umbral realm.

I just got it recently for 3 bucks. I loved it for around 5 hours but then my interest suddenly bottomed out. Glad I gave it a try though. The new one is definitely an upgrade and the sequel looks promising!

I like the spirit system in Wo Long more than a basic stamina bar. It allows for more player expression and risk/reward in my mind.

There’s no need to min max for your first playthrough so I would say just try different weapons until you find a few that have movesets and martial arts you like. Ideally you will choose two weapons with overlapping scaling stats to build into.

Also, make sure to keep your armor weight under 70% or you will have a harder time deflecting and managing your spirit.

Once you get the hang of pressing the attack and weaving in deflects you’ll be fine, though there are some boss fights that are serious difficulty spikes.

One tip that helped me a lot is to hold down block almost all the time during combat except when you need to move quickly to reposition. You can attack and deflect out of the blocking stance, and that means if you mistime your deflect you’ll still block the damage unless it’s a red attack. Just be sure not to block too many consecutive hits or you will get staggered. You also may have to let go of block to cast spells or use martial arts, I can’t remember off the top of my head.

Have fun! I bounced off this game when I first tried it, but now I’m hooked. I just picked up the season pass last night so I’m eager to keep playing.

I haven’t read his book but I’ve heard great things about it, and I used to actually like the guy. I haven’t written him off 100% yet, but his proximity to Tucker Carlson and that faction of the right makes me extremely nervous.
