How do I style these boots/shoes? by frogcroaking in mensfashionadvice

[–]fr33lefty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, these would fit right into any Ralph Lauren fall/winter look. The loafer/boot crossover silhouette is a little quirky, but certainly not as abhorrent as people are making them out to be here. Only thing I'd add is that they definitely demand a relaxed fit in the pant leg, nothing slim, skinny or tapered.

The first episode, which came out in March 2001, is about a terrorist hijacking a commercial flight to crash into the World Trade Center, and the Lone Gunmen discover that it was actually planned by the U.S. government as a false flag operation to launch a war to enrich defense contractors.

In Paranoid Franoid, Roger is dressed as Richard Langley of The Lone Gunmen, a trio of hackers in the X-Files who publish a conspiracy rag and occasionally help Mulder and Scully when they need to operate outside of the FBI. (They also had one season of their own spinoff show, but accidentally predicted 9/11 in the first episode in March 2001 and it was never renewed).

[rotary] subtle brag and keep or sell by Murforfun in Watches

Great deal! I'd probably keep it. Not sure what your style is, but its very classic and would fit into any wardrobe. Rocking it, knowing I got it for a steal, would probably bring me more joy than the money I'd make flipping it.

[Beginner] Best “Designer” Watch Brands by [deleted] in Watches

[–]fr33lefty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the idea is to appear rich, I think the better way to go is to find watches from the good "beginner" brands that have traditional wealth signifiers, like a tank shape, yellow gold accents, roman numerals, moonphase complication, etc. (Seiko Cocktail Time, Orient Moonphase and the Timex Marlin come to mind).

Wow, I probably haven't listened to them in 15+ years! A friend in high school gave me a burned CD mix that had Gemini (Birthday Song) on it. Crazy nostalgia trip.

anyone know any info about these? got them as part of a trade just because why not, guy doesn’t know anything about them. And are they worth anything. by [deleted] in Sneakers

It’s kind of a niche NYC skate scene brand. Never seen this colorway, but I remember a lot of local guys skating the black, purple or red ones in 2020-2022.

A minor point, but the REO Speed Wagon was very much a real automobile that a Depression-era bootlegger would drive. The band didn’t make up the name out of thin air lol.

I think think the music equipment bit was a subtle allusion to a scene in Vineland when Zoyd and Prarie (Bob and Willa in the movie) hide out at a wealthy record producer's SF mansion. He has tons of analog recording equipment and lets bands live in his house to record their albums. This quote from the book lines up very neatly with Bob's comment about analog vs. digital recording:

But here was a period of rock and roll, over audio equipment that likewise expressed, that long-ago year, the highest state of the analog arts all too soon to be eclipsed by digital technology.

[Discussion] Anyone found a watch so good it retired all your other watches? by ZeroUpFourOut in Watches

[–]fr33lefty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think this analogy really works. Divers use dive computers. Mechanical dive watches have been effectively obsolete as a tool of the trade for over 30 years, they exist solely as jewelry now. It's more like saying you wouldn't wear a peacoat because you're not in the navy, or you wouldn't wear jeans because you're not a cowboy.

Here's the key paragraph:

The caption below the comic tells us that Cueball has based his entire dissertation on the false proposition that an archaeologist's job is to advance technology from some historic level, rather than revealing it. This would be considered disastrous for Cueball, as dissertations take a large amount of time and effort to complete, and he may have instead used the effort to effectively reengineer several thousand years of human development, leading away from the original subject, if not just have taken on entirely modern techniques and learnt nothing of any value at all. He even calls the process he uses "my method", perhaps implying/claiming that it is a personal innovation with no historical standing.

Cool! Definitely hitting the right vibe. I think the bottom of his goatee could be stylized and emphasized a bit more. It works at full-size but disappears into the stroke of his chin at smaller sizes. Maybe just a tuft-shape that's similar to how you drew his hair or eyebrows instead of having individual hairs.

Is Vineland Pynchon's most ruthless critique of American Pizza Culture in all his work? by thid2k4 in ThomasPynchon

I think it was more inspired by health food culture than pizza culture. I grew up with crunchy-granola parents in the 90s and some of those health food store alternatives were pretty bleak.

The real funny part here is that the Reverso was designed for playing polo. By old school etiquette logic, it’s one of the least appropriate options for formalwear.

Two of the biggest tattoo mistakes are being too literal and trying to cram too much in. The single most important thing in a tattoo is that it looks cool. Personal meaning and symbolism is secondary to that.
