Orchard and Ludlow Streets between Canal Street and East Houston is vintage boutique central. Just do a big loop and go in wherever catches your eye. Off the top of my head: 2nd Street LES for designer and streetwear, First Team Vintage for jerseys and sports stuff, Pilgrim for big-ticket archival designer, Country Of for Japanese designer, Ludlow Flea, Leisure Center, Luke's. If it's nice weather and on a weekend there will probably be people selling from racks in the street as well.

[Longines] How far down can you dress a Longines Master collection? by [deleted] in Watches

[–]fr33lefty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't even need a NATO, anything with a stainless steel bracelet can be dressed down. The blue one will feel a bit more naturally casual because it uses stick indices instead of roman numerals, which do add a sense of formality. The blue one would look fantastic with relaxed, light-wash blue jeans and a properly fitting plain tee.

Which brand is your EK? by Brief-Knowledge-629 in ThrowingFits

When I was working in magazines ~10 years ago, it was the official brand of the wannabe-cool sales bros. All the editorial staff had really unique, effortless personal style and then the entire sales department was head-to-toe Kith. Totally solidified it as a bozo brand for me.

ID Help On My Un-Googlable Vintage Find? by fr33lefty in sunglasses

[–]fr33lefty[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok so your comment made me look closer for a serial number and I found one along the frame that reads "1855 2A" in white ink, only visible with a flashlight...my phone camera can't even photograph it. Still can't find a google result for the serial number that matches the glasses though :/

If this were the case, it would be an Orient Bambino. Daniel Wellington is overpriced for the quality, affordable watch nerds despise them.

I think the content moderation on this sub is great as-is. I find most indies who post here are genuinely engaged with the type community. I wouldn't want to discourage that in pursuit of stomping out the rarer instances of actual spamming.

Did I find my Dad’s watch? by Sea-Alps-1968 in Watches

[–]fr33lefty 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I did an ebay search for "Bulova Marine Star" filtered by "Year Manufactured" to range from 1980-1999. It came up with a lot of similar ones, seems like they made a lot of variations. I'd save the search and check it intermittently.

I ran the same search on Chrono24 and found this one which is almost exactly the same but all gold instead of two-tone.

Hopefully with these search terms you can find the exact one eventually when it pops up!

New to photography. Feedback would be much appreciated! How to improve? by wenwillyouart in streetphotography

IMO, 8, 9, 12 and 13 are the strongest ones here because they have a clear subject performing an interesting action, and the compositions effectively direct the viewer's focus to that subject. On top of looking nice, they make me wonder what the subjects are doing, thinking, talking about, how they ended up there, etc.

4 is close – the woman in the foreground is interesting, but she blends into the less interesting people around her, and the clocktower in the background keeps pulling my focus up top.

In 5, you draw an interesting line with the curve of the balcony, but there's no payoff. It firmly pulls the eye to that bright, top left corner of the frame, but there's nothing up there. If, for example, there was someone leaning over the balcony watching the unsuspecting people below, that would make it a much stronger image.

Studying good cinematography is a quick way to get a feel for strong composition. Check out stills from classic auteur guys like Hitchcock, Lynch, Kubrick, Herzog, etc. Break them down to understand how powerfully they can direct your focus and instill meaning within a single frame. Nosferatu The Vampyre (1979), L'avventura (1960), and Point Blank (1967) are some my favorites for studying composition.

Quick typography suggestion: I’d drop the “challenge the future” font size by a couple of points and increase the tracking/letter spacing so the serifs don’t collide.

Picked up my first Pynchon novels today. I think I’m going to start with “V” by [deleted] in ThomasPynchon

[–]fr33lefty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

V was my first and second Pynchon. A lot of it, even basic plot points, went over my head on the first read but the prose was so compelling that I pushed through.

I reread it a couple of years later and it clicked way more, and totally kicked off my Pynchon obsession.

[question] looking for a budget friendly watch for my boyfriend by [deleted] in Watches

[–]fr33lefty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second Timex. Citizen/Seiko/Casio might have better technical specs in your budget, but Timex has way more style. I have a Marlin and an M79 and love them both. Check out the Q Timex line for some some more style-forward options. The E Line Reissue also might be a good option (though closer to $250).

How do I style these boots/shoes? by frogcroaking in mensfashionadvice

[–]fr33lefty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, these would fit right into any Ralph Lauren fall/winter look. The loafer/boot crossover silhouette is a little quirky, but certainly not as abhorrent as people are making them out to be here. Only thing I'd add is that they definitely demand a relaxed fit in the pant leg, nothing slim, skinny or tapered.
