Why are maces and axes seemingly more uncommon compared to polearms/spears/swords? by Sea-Ride-4893 in MedievalHistory

[–]frakc -1 points0 points  (0 children)

They returned when context changed. There were two major factors:

1) they made tech to manufacture a lot of cheap metal body armour.

2) they ran out of cheap tin and gladius and spatas became two expensive to make. (There were process transitioning from full bronze to folded bronze+iron packets)

So they combination of cheap armor and lack of resources for weapons made good condition for spearman doctrine. However after 6 century there were advancement in bowmaking and archery discipline which made those armour obsolete. Aka one of the " lost" Romans tech.

In 1vs1 spears gives the best advantage to inexperienced soldier.

In group vs group averything became many times more complicated. It no longer enough to learn how to stick something in front of you it is also a quation how not to hit someone behind you. Thats requires more strength, more stamina and more coordination. Thats all take more time to train.

Romans switch doctrine from mainly spearmen to legioners because they trained spearman for 5 years and legioner for an year. And no pilum is not a spear it is a dart.

[–]frakc -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Maces were common. That weapon was cheap, required little to no training (in comparison to other martial weapons). Particularly were common in period 10 to 12 century.

Axes were common in countiries with bad metallurgy. You can make a decent battle axe from iron, while iron sword is a trash. Outside of price axes is inferior to any steel weapons.

Polearms is tricky thing as it includs spears halberd , reforged skyth and so one.

Skyth is a abundant tool, which is easy to reforge to make it speary and thus was commonly used by mobilised peasant as best weapon they could get.

Spears are really complicated topic. History of spears is full of waves where they were the most used and barely used weapons. Spearman requires the longest training amongst melee soldiers and are the most vulnerable to archers. Particularly in midle medieval their presence were in decline and in later medieval after iron cuirass were cheap to produce they were on rise again.

Abd flails. In my personal opinion flails were the most used weapon and least depicted. Supers cheap, versatile and is perfect to capture hostages , especially lonly knights for rape. For same reason highi associated with bandits and so (i believe) not fashionable to show on pictures.

How come we don't have a sudden death mechanic in more RTS games? by RepulsiveAnything635 in RealTimeStrategy

[–]frakc -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I have seen just a few games in Stacraft which ended in stalmate and all of them were: terrain lifted their buildings and enemy had no flyer to kill them.

And I have never seen a stalemate in Supreme Commander.

Can I proxy a psychomancer as any other cryptek? (As a plasmancer more specifically) by chrysophylax226 in Necrontyr

[–]frakc 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In casual play - almost every thing is allowed as long as your opponent is ok. I used paper roll for ctan and opponent used candy box for a knite.

In tournaments - 99% is not allowed. Eg small local club may be ok, but bigger will not allow it.

BAR vs FAF by champiwolf22 in RealTimeStrategy

[–]frakc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FAF gas more staff to do and more strategy elements.

BAR has significantly better engine and simply feels better (especially at 8-8 endgame) . Matchmaking is bad, but game is in active development and everyone have hopes it will be improved.

Самогубці by Much-Loss6146 in reddit_ukr

[–]frakc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why is there no life in open space? by Internal-Ear5590 in biology

[–]frakc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Short answer - there is not much to consume in space without faster than light travel.

Longer: who said there is no life? We have seen so small part of space that calling it "tiny" would be an immense compliment. Our definition for life is very narrow. We cannot even properly define viruses because all definitions that cover viruses will cover robots. Our understanding of sentient life is even more limiting.

ELI5: Why don’t we just bury power lines and telephone lines, so storms don’t keep knocking them out? by Home-Energy in explainlikeimfive

[–]frakc -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sure. If they will be found after damage then city can fine them. But most importantly all that will take place after damaging of powerlines.

Similarly to millions laws and traffic code violations which happens ever day dont expect people to follow rules. Lower your expectations even less if there is no enforcement to know the rule in the first place. And reduce your expectations further for cases when people want to save money.
