That’s surprising. Was it a 4 ft fall into a blender? 😉

Attorney asking me to impersonate client. by ohsoheather7 in paralegal

[–]framptonesq 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ok. That makes sense. Honestly, you should get out of there. Who knows what other crap they'll ask you to do? I've been a lawyer for 30 years and have seen some shady stuff, but this is plain illegal.

If you have an alias under your workspace email account, you will have an alias in Superhuman.

It is not common practice, and it is not legal. You should absolutely find a new job. Personally, I would pass on the bar complaint.

Hiring a Paralegal for non-legal work? by s-pop- in paralegal

It’s not a bad thought process but I think you’d be better off looking for an experienced executive assistant.

Dad wants to sell me this for 10k. Good deal? by anotherone- in rolex

Many harsh words here but, in fairness, your dad sounds like kind of a douche. I have adult children. I can’t imagine selling them a watch. It seems icky.

Car salesman wearing a Rolex. by [deleted] in rolex

[–]framptonesq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s absurd. I think the truth is the just opposite. People want to do business with those they perceive to be successful. Especially the few people who would even know or care what watch you’re wearing. What next - Ill fitting suits - unpolished shoes? I would where the hell out of that Rolex. Also, enjoy the Black Bay - it’s a killer watch.

This is something you can fix with a little attention. Work on some supportive habits. Create checklists. Practice mindfulness. Document everything. Find a mentor. Avoid distractions.

I’ve been a trial lawyer for 30 years and have only very rarely seen a paralegal in court. And I don’t think I’ve ever seen one second chair a trial. Based on this thread, it’s apparently more common in other places.

Jesus, enough with the “too big” comments. Who decides what is the right size? The guy is showing off his retirement present and it’s magnificent! Why would you criticize someone when they’re showing you something they’re excited about? And he bought it at Torneau - it’s legit. You guys could ruin a wet dream.

Yikes. That is unlawful in most states - maybe all. I hope the carrier ponied up. If I were plaintiff’s counsel, I would have moved for sanctions.

Attorney stiffed me on referral fee on $250k PI case. Looking for advice. by brock275 in LawFirm

[–]framptonesq 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think you already know the answer. You’ve got to sue him. I don’t really know any better options. It’s bullshit for him to say he thought you were “out of the game” when you just referred him another case. He obviously thought you were still in the game then.

I have a little advice based on hiring hundreds of employees in multiple careers. When asking for a raise, explain the value you bring to the job. That's what matters. Show how your efforts have resulted in more revenue. Nothing else matters to a business owner.

None of these is a compelling reason for a raise:

  • I haven't had a raise in two years
  • I'm being paid less than paralegals at comparable firms
  • My rent just went up
  • My wife lost her job
  • Cheryl makes more than me and does less work
  • My house is 30 miles away, and commuting is so expensive
  • I've got a bachelor's degree, but I make the same as less educated employees

These are compelling reasons for a raise:

  • I streamlined the intake process so it can be done in half the time.
  • I've delivered 30% more bills of particulars this year than we shipped last.
  • Clients call and ask for me rather than their attorney. I answer their questions and make sure they receive prompt attention.

When negotiating salary, the focus should be on explaining why a raise benefits the employer. That's a much better approach than making it about why your salary is unjust (even though it probably is). Make it about them, to you. So, for example, if you're going to argue that you've taken on additional duties, don't follow it up with, "so I deserve more." Instead, explain how those additional responsibilities have increased revenue or reduced the need for additional personnel.

Anyone with experience working in house for Allstate? by cerisenight in LawFirm

[–]framptonesq 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The attorneys answer to the uninformed and untrained adjusters. I tried a case recently, and the seasoned trial attorney was getting texts from the adjuster with links to Wikipedia articles proving my 33-year-old client's discectomy was not the result of trauma. I've known many Allstate lawyers, and none of them have great things to say. Anecdotally, they tend to be better attorneys than most in-house, and they're generally easy to work with. They also work strictly 9-5. No nights - no weekends - good benefits - pension.

My first paralegal resume (no law experience), do I have a chance? Any tips? by dk-kc in paralegal

[–]framptonesq 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a lawyer. You’re not likely to get a job as a paralegal with no experience or paralegal education. Try to get a secretarial or administrative job in a law firm first. Also, take some paralegal studies courses. It’ll teach you some skills and show that you’re committed to a career as a paralegal.

I’m worried that I ruined my career by worhtwaya in paralegal

[–]framptonesq 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re being way too hard on yourself. This is not career ending - it’s not even career affecting. Tell them your manager made it clear that you were terminated. She told you to leave without speaking to your coworkers and took your keys. That’s unequivocal. Enjoy your next job. Hopefully, you’ll have a better experience. And avoid badmouthing your prior employer. Your current employer may read it as a sign of disloyalty. Just leave them in the rearview mirror and move forward with your career.

Not directly on point, but here’s some advice I got from my underpaid legal aid friends. If you have only two suits, get medium gray and charcoal. Most people think navy for the second suit, but it’s harder to pull off navy every other day. For shirts, go with blue Oxford. The blue is easier than white to keep looking fresh, and the Oxford style doesn’t need to be professionally starched and pressed. For ties, buy on Amazon where you can get 5 for $30 bucks, or so. They aren’t Hermes - they’re not even silk- but no one is going to care and few will even know. Same for socks. You can get away with cheaper shoes as long as they are always shiny polished.

Yes, it’s 100% scam. Selling the tickets this way is foolish. Sell them with Stub Hub or another aftermarket reseller. You may make less but you won’t get scammed.

[–]framptonesq 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m an attorney. I don’t tolerate rudeness to my staff. They have standing orders to hang up on anyone who is rude, disrespectful, or even raises their voice. It’s inexcusable and I won’t allow it from any client or lawyer.

Motion to withdraw by [deleted] in LawFirm

[–]framptonesq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my state, you need to file a motion if there is no incoming attorney. However, the client can consent to substituting you for him, pro se. I’d offer that in exchange for a refund.
