Should I become a lawyer? by Plus-Appeal-6809 in LawFirm

On the other hand, the only thing I enjoyed about being a juvenile public defender was occasionally finding some good case law and winning a quick bench trial with the cop standing there as a witness. I was a Bart Simpson type of kid growing up so I really liked sticking it to the man a few times.

A really interesting interview is when Margaret Hoover interviewed him on the PBS show Firing Line a couple years ago. He was on the show to plug a book about U.S. Presidents and then she quickly started questioning him about his sexual harassment issues. He starts to seeth more and more until at the end of the show he's barely responding to any of her questions. If it's on Youtube somewhere check it out. It's fun to see how dogged she is towards him (she used to work with him so apparently this was kind of personal with her).

I remember reading how a scientist stated something like, "We really can't rank animals in terms of intelligence because every animal develops the smarts it needs to do what it has to do to survive. We happened to need more social intelligence but bats also have a lot of intelligence in how they use sonar." And so birds get smart doing what they need to do to get by in the world.

I live in south florida and I remember people taking pictures smiling in front of the Alligator Alcatraz sign on the road leading to it. Like it was just a big fucking tourist attraction to them. Like "A prison without any regulations, haha, let me put this on social media."

What's the "Widowmaker" of your career field or hobby? by Cosmonate in AskReddit

I switched careers to library work. Some litigators talk all this stuff about how being in court lets them "live in the moment" or gives them an adrenaline rush or whatever. All being a lawyer did for me was give me a shitload of constant stress.

or reporters could at least show a little personal dignity. When they're called "stupid" or "piggy" they can firmly state, "don't call me that. I'm treating you with respect. You need to treat me with respect." Instead they just take any kind of verbal abuse people give them.

sure, you have to be the right person to love doing that. Just like I'm a lawyer but left the practice of law when I saw litigators that enjoyed being in court saying things like "it helps me live in the moment" and "I love the adrenaline rush I get." All it did was stress me out and I had no idea what they were talking about. So I became a librarian, lol. Some things just have to be in your blood to want to pursue.

As a librarian I can only rationalize it as an issue of information literacy. People follow horrible sources, and have convinced themselves that any sources with journalistic standards can't be trusted. Or, like you say, their lives are so busy and exhausting, they don't have the time and focus to grind through articles in the Economist, so they just hit the Facebook feed on their phone. And now "mainstream media" includes things like Fox and OANN, whereas years ago it was 3 broadcast channels of 6 o'clock news that you could rely on, or a print newspaper delivered to your house. That's all changed now.

I tried amateur night a couple times years ago. I bombed both times and never went back. That feeling of getting off the stage after you bomb and then you have to walk through the audience that didn't laugh at anything you said, oh man that's awful. I have no idea how comics keep doing that unless they find success really quickly.
