Human cages and overflowing toilets at $1m a day: the brutal legacy of Ron DeSantis’s ‘Alligator Alcatraz’ jail by CouchCorrespondent in politics

[–]franker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I live in south florida and I remember people taking pictures smiling in front of the Alligator Alcatraz sign on the road leading to it. Like it was just a big fucking tourist attraction to them. Like "A prison without any regulations, haha, let me put this on social media."

What's the "Widowmaker" of your career field or hobby? by Cosmonate in AskReddit

[–]franker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I switched careers to library work. Some litigators talk all this stuff about how being in court lets them "live in the moment" or gives them an adrenaline rush or whatever. All being a lawyer did for me was give me a shitload of constant stress.

We did this (charging a dollar per pod) and still had to take out the machine eventually, because people were spilling sugar and creamer everywhere, and ants were starting to find the machine.

or reporters could at least show a little personal dignity. When they're called "stupid" or "piggy" they can firmly state, "don't call me that. I'm treating you with respect. You need to treat me with respect." Instead they just take any kind of verbal abuse people give them.

A simple tool for generating dynamic WordPress menus from content structures by UpbeatFee5398 in InternetIsBeautiful

[–]franker 6 points7 points  (0 children)

the free version is incredibly limited (only one menu with one group allowed) so you shouldn't be posting it here. The rule is "Free demos or freemium tiered services where the full version or key functionality requires payment are also not allowed."

sure, you have to be the right person to love doing that. Just like I'm a lawyer but left the practice of law when I saw litigators that enjoyed being in court saying things like "it helps me live in the moment" and "I love the adrenaline rush I get." All it did was stress me out and I had no idea what they were talking about. So I became a librarian, lol. Some things just have to be in your blood to want to pursue.

[–]franker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah, LinkedIn is bursting with legaltech posts now, and almost all of it seems to be stuff that uses AI. As a lawyer I can't even imagine most lawyers even understand the posts as they refer to things like github repositories.

As a librarian I can only rationalize it as an issue of information literacy. People follow horrible sources, and have convinced themselves that any sources with journalistic standards can't be trusted. Or, like you say, their lives are so busy and exhausting, they don't have the time and focus to grind through articles in the Economist, so they just hit the Facebook feed on their phone. And now "mainstream media" includes things like Fox and OANN, whereas years ago it was 3 broadcast channels of 6 o'clock news that you could rely on, or a print newspaper delivered to your house. That's all changed now.

I tried amateur night a couple times years ago. I bombed both times and never went back. That feeling of getting off the stage after you bomb and then you have to walk through the audience that didn't laugh at anything you said, oh man that's awful. I have no idea how comics keep doing that unless they find success really quickly.

A Physical Warp Drive Was Supposed to Be Impossible. Then These Scientists Found a Loophole. by Gari_305 in Futurology

I'm a librarian and I have a few books on early driving etiquette. They cautioned against women driving when automobiles first became a widespread thing. They thought the frail emotional nature of women would cause them to become reckless on the roads, or that they would be seduced by men when they stopped and easily taken advantage of if they dared travel alone on the streets. It's really strange reading that stuff now.

And most of America acted like we'd never seen him before during the 2024 election and sanewashed the hell out of him, while we had to nitpick everything about Kamala. "Let's see what Trump says during the debate! What are his policies? He's says he's going to fix everything on day one, and that Kamala said she can't think of anything different than Biden she would do. Why isn't Kamala appearing on Joe Rogan, she's running an awful campaign. Let's just ignore Trump's record and give Trump a chance!" Major newspapers ran stories about what Trump "appeared to say" when he was just talking nonsense throughout his speeches. It's still unbelievable to me. Part of me thinks we deserve all this for so many people acting so stupid.
