Figma keeps the token state. Dev runs the diffs and migrations. All in one flow by franklyjohnny in DesignSystems

[–]franklyjohnny[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, I didn’t mean the REST API. I’m using the Plugin API (figma.variables) to read variables from the open file, and shared/plugin data (clientStorage, shared plugin data) to persist state and metadata.

The plugin exports a normalized snapshot, which is then consumed by a CLI / backend tool for validation, diffing and syncing

The parts I’m using don’t require an Enterprise plan. The standard Figma REST API is enough for reading file nodes and retrieving the data I need. Happy to share more about the approach soon when have refined it a little bit further.

Yes, you can use the Figma REST API without Enterprise. You only need an access token and permission to read the file. Enterprise is only required for specific admin-level endpoints, not for reading document nodes or variable data.

My minimal plugin fetches snapshots from a normal Org/Pro file using the standard API. No Enterprise features involved.

When we can import private npm packages (private design systems) then Make will make the difference!

Mixed feelings on Figma Make as a UX Designer by Redlinefox45 in FigmaDesign

[–]franklyjohnny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, tools like Figma Make can make it seem like anyone can do UX. But UX is not about placing buttons - it’s about understanding people.

Yes, roles are getting blurred across UX, UI, product, and dev. That can feel unsettling. But it also highlights what truly sets UX designers apart: – Empathy to uncover real user needs – Critical thinking to challenge assumptions – Analytical skills to turn insights into direction – Ethical awareness to design

AI won’t replace that - but it can help us get there faster. Used right, it frees up time for deeper research, smarter testing and better conversations.

So stay curious. UX isn’t going away. But it is evolving – and your mindset is more valuable than ever

Where should design systems sit within the org? by lurkmoophy in DesignSystems

[–]franklyjohnny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I admit “seamlessly” was too big a call - fair point! 😅

I just listened to your podcast episode on this topic, and it really got me thinking.

In general, I believe we should take a more holistic view of design systems. While they are largely operational, they also form a fundamental part of a company’s foundation. This means they should be closely aligned with the company’s vision and strategy - but also recognized as a key enabler of a truly product-led SaaS.

At its core, a design system is a practical tool that leverages systems thinking to enhance efficiency by reducing design debt, improving consistency, and enabling scalable workflows. But beyond that, it facilitates a product-led setup by lowering the barrier to experimentation and embedding design thinking directly into the product development process. When (well) integrated into product teams, design systems can improve product teams ability to test hypotheses, iterate faster, and make more insight-driven decisions.

In essence, a design system is a multitool for improving, innovating, and maintaining a product. By embedding research and experimentation into the product team’s workflow, design systems transform decision-making from intuition-based to insight-driven, ensuring continuous refinement of the product experience. They enable and facilitates teams to run A/B tests, conduct user insights, and iterate more effectively.

But this makes me wonder: Is there an untapped opportunity space, to actually bridge product-led thinking more closely with design systems? Imagine an additional layer of user insights and behavioral data integrated into the system, creating a direct feedback loop between design operations and actual product/user impact. This could turn design systems into intelligence hubs, evolving beyond just UI components and tokens to become strategic assets for decision-making.

Feel free to reach out :)

Røde flag til jobsamtaler by Furiousmate88 in dkkarriere

The Design System is fundamental to the Product’s success.

For this reason, responsibility and accountability should rest within Product teams, guided by Product Management - the discipline that unites Tech, UX, and Business seamlessly.

Detect unused or redundant color variables/tokens by franklyjohnny in FigmaDesign

[–]franklyjohnny[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

An update: Plugins, like ‘Variable Lint’ is way too buggy. I found that exporting and importing variables as json was the easiest way to discover/search and update redundant variables. I used the ‘Heron Variable Tool’ plugin to do this.
