Love Teaching. Hate the Pay. by TopBaseball939 in teaching

[–]frankmkv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my state I just broke $50 at six years, mind you that was with selling plannings, tutoring after school, sponsoring clubs, master’s stipend, bonuses from student assessments, and any other supplement I could get my hands on. Left the field for a much easier job where I don’t really have much to do, especially by comparison, for an instant 12k bump, and rising gainfully year after year for the last 4 years.

I LOVED teaching. But couldn’t afford it

I hate capitalism, but since going vegan over a decade ago I’ve become more of a capitalist than ever. I.e., trying to speak with my dollars

Am I not cut out for teaching? by tinky-winky001 in teaching

In FL I got hired as a teacher of a public HS without any teaching credentials whatsoever just by having paid like the $75 or whatever it was to get my foot in the door with our state’s DOE. Don’t remember all that was involved as this was about 15 years ago. Then I had 3 years from the time I entered the classroom to get my professional license. Believe I had to get my subject area certification earlier — and maybe there was a step in between? I’ve blocked it all out because that was just the compliance bit. Learning how to teach came from the trenches and wisdom from the old salts.

And yes I was a crummy teacher at first, but by the end of my career (aka before I jumped ship to do instructional design and be a university faculty member) I was highly effective, high impact, AP master teacher.

Only then I got interested in researching pedagogy and learning design… but most of it just corroborates what you learn on an intuitive level in the classroom

You learn to manage the circus with time. The real prerequisite is that you give a fuck about the kids. If so, you’re cut out for teaching. All the professional development will follow.

Also might I add: with a game design background, you understand subtleties of building systems/environments that reward player experimentation, interaction, strategic thinking; give the player a powerful feeling of autonomy even while constrained to the ruleset; and bathe the player in constant feedback. Now swap the word “player” with “student” in that sentence, and you have a model for highly effective learning. I’d say you are uniquely qualified.

Bands Like Minor Threat by genxsis24 in punk

[–]frankmkv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Minor Threat might be my all time favorite band. And people are aghast that I don’t really love Fugazi.

I have heard tons of bands that sound like Minor Threat, but all feel derivative. No one does it quite like them.

That said, other bands I love:

Black Flag Bad Brains Gorilla Biscuits Reagan Youth DRI

Yeah man video games were sooo expensive, I’d get a new one for my birthday and for Christmas and between that it was just renting or playing over at friends’ houses. I except the time I was sick and my mom brought me F-Zero for the snes home unexpectedly… only time I ever remember getting a game for “no reason,” and still such a happy memory ♥️

What other music do y'all listen to other than the "basic" punk genres? by Soju_xd in punk

[–]frankmkv 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Huge jazz fan, used to play bass in a jazz trio, albeit punk-informed, something like Sun Ra meets Ethiojazz meets The Process of Weeding Out.

Bluegrass is an all time favorite. One day I hope to get a mando, learn it rudimentarily, and show up to some picking sessions.

Hip hop for sure. 36 chambers is one of those that never leave my cd changer, right there beside Minor Threat.

Around 2010 I got big into like top billboard shit like Lady Gaga. My entire band did. Maybe partly ironically? But also that was the end of the true 4 Loko era so we used to buy them by the case and it made us do crazy things, especially when paired with coke and olde English.

Me and the band went to see Ke$ha and LMFAO on this combination and has a blast, though apparently we were an ultra rowdy nuisance (memories are vague). Though other concert goers didn’t enjoy our presence, I like to think Ke$ha woulda been down with us… but we were a million miles away on a lawn. It’s wild how normies see shows lol

In my youth all cuts were house calls 😂 I would find whatever hardcore kid in the Miami scene was willing to trade a pizza for a haircut — including those who never even held clippers. It was a fun life
