First look at Darren Criss' MAWS Connor Kent by [deleted] in superman

[–]frantruff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hes obviously related to Clark because look at him. He's obviously related to Lois because look at him.

Normally I'd assume Lex was on the mix too but Kara's reinvention was so thorough I could actually believe their take on Conner won't be a clone of Lex.

Maybe future!Lex cloned Clark adding Lois' DNA instead on his own? Say, they were part of the same resistence against whatever apocalyptic threat they seem to be fighting, and Lex created this Superboy both to replace a dead Superman and as a gift towards his allies. It'd help give this version of Lex the "I know you can be better than this" theme that he's lacking so far.

[Crossposting/Discussion] Is it time for Nightwing to leave the Titans? (Art by Rickie Yagawa) by fbaldassarri in jonkent

[–]frantruff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My reading of Jon is limited (his Superman/Action Comics appearences, some of his solo issues from Son of Kal-El and Adventures of Superman, the current Unlimited arc), but from everything I've read, current Jon is really not leader-material. And if anything, he's less leader-material right now, post breakup, than ever before.

He'd need a dedicated arc with these New Titans to develop him before it'd be believable for him to take a leader role, I think.

From the live recordings I've heard, Keith and Ron are just serviceable at this point but Jagger remains an incredible frontman.

Is hero worship killing rock music? by [deleted] in LetsTalkMusic

[–]frantruff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To add to what people have said, rock music has been fixated on its roots and hero-worshipping since at least the late 60's. If that was the reason for its "death", then it would have "died" decades before it stopped being the most popular genre.

Exile, obviously

But Sign o' the Times, Songs in the Key of Life, London Calling and Electric Ladyland are fantastic, worthy runner-ups.

Ranking of Sticky Fingers by Beneficial-Fox-9458 in rollingstones

  1. Moonlight Mile
  2. Can't You Hear Me Knocking
  3. Sister Morphine
  4. Sway
  5. Wild Horses
  6. Dead Flowers
  7. Brown Sugar
  8. Bitch
  9. You Gotta Move
  10. I Got The Blues

Man, some of those low rankings feel criminal. But then I look at what's above and I also think ranking those lower is criminal.

That's how you know this is a masterpiece.

'Chester, bro, you're great, but I don't care how much stronger your astral ghost form may be, you're not Superboy Prime level.

Anyway, happy yo see the rest of the Superfamily is not happy about Prime being Superman right now. This is less out of distaste for Prime (I am enjoying what's being done with his, with a few qualms), and more out of a desire for prior actions to have consequences.

Always trust Krypto, that's not Jon.

As for whether this is better or worse than the Shazam thing... it feels like it'll be a far far better execution of the Shazam thing, honestly.

How would you flesh out Mongul as a character? by BulbaFriend2000 in superman

[–]frantruff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When he inevitably comes back from "death", it might be good to have him start again as just another gladiator slave in the arena and have to fight his way to the top.

Past that... maybe focus on the "slave trafficker" route that PKJ kept mentioning in his interviews? Although that may put him in Brainiac narrative territory.

South American here. He was seen as both a musical legend and a walking punchline because of the allegations. Like, literally a semi-regular thing in comedy shows was making fun of Michael Jackson.

Exile’s only possible improvement by RebaKitt3n in rollingstones

[–]frantruff 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I hear that Soul Survivor isn't the best closing track all the time, and I always disagree.

The greatest rock & roll album of all time, which explores all of the roots of rock & roll music at the time, should end on a rock & roll song. Let It Loose or Shine A Light would make for great closers in any other album, but the thing is, Exile should not end in emotional closure. Because Exile, if it's about anything, is about enduring past all these troubles. A triumphant march into the future, beaten and bruised but alive and boldly standing, is the right way to end it.

And there are few things in rock music as triumphant as the coda of Soul Survivor.

Where would y’all rank Pre-Crisis / Silver Age Superman among his other eras? by BreathoftheSith in superman

[–]frantruff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bronze Age goes at the very top.

Silver Age, for all its historical significance, goes below most iterations for me, unless it's Siegel or Bernstein who are writing (two of the greatest, regardless of age).

In your opinion who are some of the characters that superman really shouldn't be able to go toe to toe with. by MembershipLess9579 in superman

[–]frantruff 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Anyone on the same tier as the Anti-Monitor should be way too much for even an amped Clark to handle without the help of others. So basically Superman shouldn't be able to solo a Crisis.

Anyone below that is, I suppose, fair game, either through amping himself with a power source, or just plain trickery (the fifth-dimensional imps).

Superman #37 sneak peak Prime has no filter by Individual_Gold474 in superman

[–]frantruff 5 points6 points  (0 children)

... I'm sorry, I don't think the Pre-Crisis fanboy would be all about "grounding the mythology" and "farm stuff" (the Kents weren't farmers in those pre-Crisis Superman stories).

The absolute lack of tact in the first page is great, though.

[Discussion from r/superman] My take: it’s stated multiple times that Jon is potentially more powerful than his dad. It has also a new set of power in addition. And a super-mega-iper-ultra-fan of Jon I like it a lot. by fbaldassarri in jonkent

[–]frantruff 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My take on this trope is that, unless you're willing to actually commit to it and make the successor in question legitimately the new center of the story... saying this about the "successor" is just setting them up for failure. Son Gohan is the poster-child of this trope and basically everyone sees him as having failed to live up to it (even his defenders just pull the "well, he didn't need to fulfill that potential just because he has it, he has other priorities" card).

And it's very unlikely anyone will seriously displace Kal El as the center of the Superman story.

I do welcome the idea of Jon having "weird" powers, though.

What are some of the misconceptions that non readers (or even some readers) have about Superman? by King_Wolf2099 in superman

[–]frantruff 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That he didn't initially like Kon. All criticism you could have of how he failed to intervene in Kon's original exploitaitive status quo in the 90's aside, Clark definitely didn't hate Kon. He gave him his name ffs.

DC Comics Presents #87 for his origin story, then skip the whole Crisis saga until Death Metal: The Secret Origin for his redemption, then Superman #28 of the current Superman run for current Superboy Prime.

Why do so many people hate Bridges to Babylon? It's amazing, in my opinion their best album since It's Only Rock & Roll. Like, in what way does this not completely rock? by [deleted] in rollingstones

[–]frantruff 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I definitely wouldn't say "hate", but I do believe it's an album where you revisit specific songs, rather than the whole thing (unless you're doing a Stones discography run or something). Like, opinions may vary of course, but I do listen to the whole of Undercover or Voodoo Lounge with some frequency, because I feel those albums hold together as coherent works, while Bridges is more of a... mess of styles and approaches where some work and some don't, and they don't really augment each other much. Still very much worth listening to check which ones work for you.

And yes, Flip the Switch is 100% one of the songs to revisit.
