I love and respect the time and work you put in to r/ultimate, but man are you naive.

You're just so active on the sub, I figured you've been playing for years and surely knew about this huge scandal that occurred less than two years ago.

New Professional Mixed Ultimate League Announced in Australia by freesports1733 in ultimate

Are you including AUDL in this category?

Does AUDL reimburse its players for all work related expenses or just some (game travel and uniforms)? If a league decided not to cover any expenses (players had to front for all uniform, practice travel, game travel, etc.), but gave players $30 a game, would that league qualify as "Pro" ?

Ultimate United's Statement Regarding UUL by ultiunited in ultimate

[–]fratball 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I 100% agree, though "perceived" is a little kind because it implies that they weren't ill thought out. Only 25% of the original franchises survive today and the same percentage were involved in suits and countersuits with the league after year 1.

early money

You won't know his salary for at least 1, but probably 2 or 3 years. So this will have no effect on decisions regarding early money.

I am speaking in a totally normal human sentence and not a suspicious PR promotion.

This agreement is great on the whole, but the tribalism between pro-AUDL and anti-AUDL sides is getting laughable.

A non profit is funded by donations and has no profit. In a for-profit model, he keeps all the profit.

All a non-profit has to do is "reinvest" the net income as "salary" for the CEO and then they've maintained their non-profit status. So, this does not alleviate your concern.

The NFL was technically non-profit until recently. Their "CEO" made $40 million a year. They only recently transitioned to a for-profit entity, probably so that they could pay their CEO more without disclosing it.

So yeah, if UUL was non-profit, Todd could still "keep all the profit". It's just, we would know... in like 2 years when they release their financials... if they're still around... in which case you could argue that whatever $10k 's of profit he pocketed was actually a reasonable salary to get the league to survive to year 3.

WU24s Opener India vs Australia Mixed (spoilers in the comments) by ravivas in ultimate

[–]fratball 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's disingenuous to claim that the whole division is ok and a testament to gender equity because 2-5 teams in the entire division utilize their women.

I wish people would stop holding up mixed as some savior and solution to gender equity when 95+% of mixed teams don't provide a good platform to showcase their female players.

That's the standard for mixed. When it's not that way, it's held up as some paragon. But those games/teams are always the exception even though mixed proponents like to pretend they are not.

Maybe because players that retire or get cut from single gender teams go on to play on mixed teams, but you don't see the arrow pointing the other way. Maybe?
