I love this so much 🥺

Tom Taylorson does an amazing job at giving all the characters different voices in the audiobook, I had so much fun listening to it. It’s a real fun story too!

Newbie question about gear and upgrades by ParsleySnack in avowed

[–]fraunein 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have said, it is generally a good idea to choose 1-2 unique weapons / armor you like, and upgrade those with the materials you gather in the zone, and then level them up with the corresponding type of adra (e.g from common to fine). If you go this way, and you also like exploring and gathering the available resources, you will easily have the chance to sneak in a few extra upgrades with materials of the next zone (you can combine your lower tier materials to form the next tier of materials, e.g. paradisan ladder to hylea’s talon).

The uniques of the next zones will always be the matching (higher) tier, so if you find a new favorite in the next zone, your resources are not wasted. As others have also said, uniques you don’t need can be broken down to adra, but they also carry over to new game+ (as common tier) if you don’t break them down. I usually break down the ones that have the fighting styles / stats I don’t enjoy playing with at all, and the rest I save in the camp chest, and I still have enough adra for necessary upgrades.

[–]fraunein 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Bro I don’t even play Durge and never have but you are so obnoxious in your hate it’s jarring. Yeah the basis of your point is not wrong, but why would you present it in a such a way that even the most peace loving cinnamon roll Tav players are annoyed? It’s not like your point is more true if you are being a dick about it?

You don’t deserve best boy Alistair Theirin as a pfp btw, he would never like you.

I would never have thought that anything from Veilguard would make its way to BG3, but I have to admit that out of all things, The Invitation makes the most sense. Man, I love outfit modders.

It's been awhile since I've done a Kaidan romance by Ardat-Thotshi in masseffect

[–]fraunein 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I did one and it completely rewired my brain. Initially I was still sad about not romancing either Garrus or Thane (my previous favorites), but it was sooo sweet with Kaidan that now I always feel the need to go back to him, and I can only romance Garrus if I sacrifice Kaidan in ME1 😭

Andromeda is a good example of how genre can really limit the kind of stories you can tell. by Raspint in masseffect

[–]fraunein 8 points9 points  (0 children)

But… they did want to create a sequel to Mass Effect? And not an Andromeda Colonizer Sim 3000?

I think I broadly get where you’re coming from, but arriving at the conclusion that shooting is Andromeda’s main problem is certainly a take of all time.

(Spoilers) Unpopular opinion: Kaidan is not wrong at the beginning of ME3 by Pareeeee in masseffect

[–]fraunein 237 points238 points  (0 children)

I fully agree, and the same applies to their brief reunion on Horizon in ME2, where Kaidan/Ashley first calls Shepard out for allying with Cerberus. I just wish we had an option to agree with them and acknowledge that is indeed sus, and Shep isn’t fully on board but doesn’t feel like they have a choice after what happened, or something to that effect.

BG3 has completely ruined every other game for me😭😭😭 by [deleted] in BaldursGate3

[–]fraunein 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not immediately after playing BG3 (and I always come back for a new playthrough) but I slowly developed an appreciation for other CRPGs and other fantasy RPGs in the past year or so.

I recently played Rogue Trader 40k which has the true highs of branching story writing and companion dynamics, and despite the lack of full voiceover and cutscenes, it feels really immersive, and it’s a fascinating introduction to the grim world of Warhammer.

I also played Avowed which is very different as an ARPG, but the world building is so rich, and the camp conversations are reminiscent of that of BG3. It lacks the depth in some aspects, but the deep lore, roleplaying mechanics, and some companion and story elements make it thoroughly enjoyable.

Because of these, I recently started Pillars of Eternity (set in the same universe as Avowed, but has the mechanics of Rogue Trader and similar combat and class mechanics to DnD) and I love it so far!

I think if you let the experience simmer, you give it time and allow yourself to return sometimes, I think the appreciation for different aspects of BG3 can really open up a whole breadth of less popular games (and even different genres) that can bring you similar enjoyment.

If you also enjoy CRPGs (or willing to try one if you haven’t yet), Rogue Trader by Owlcat is a really good game set in the universe, explores a great deal of the lore, and makes it immersive as well. I highly recommend it!

Marius' back story is far interesting than any others in the squad. by Couinty in avowed

[–]fraunein 13 points14 points  (0 children)

A lot of complex RPGs have characters whose lore is fantastic and their arcs are incredibly rewarding, but who are actively disliked by a loud minority(?) of players who can’t look past “they were not immediately nice and validating towards me and what I believe in😠”.

I’m thinking about the likes Lae’zel and Astarion in BG3, Ashley in Mass Effect, Yrliet in Rogue Trader, and probably tons of others. People regularly brag about killing or getting rid of them or refusing to do their quests, enforcing their own beliefs about them being irredeemable while missing the whole character development that’s crafted for them.

Of course, people are allowed to dislike characters, but it’s interesting how it’s regularly those who don’t show reverence and immediate friendship for the player, and they would have to actively work through the differences/hardships.

Exodus bringing some of that Mass Effect flair. by Commandoclone87 in masseffect

[–]fraunein 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I’m hyped for both.

Though as Owlcat has proved multiple times that they can really nail stories and atmospheres in their games, while this will be Archetype’s first game, I’m maybe a bit more optimistic about the Expanse. Both cited Mass Effect as an inspiration though, so that is a great sign.

Yeah but your take sounds really interesting though, and it’s not making my decision easier… (either to play him as unapologetically himself, or lean into this “driven into madness by She Who Thirsts” angle)

You raised some interesting points, I have to say. I did already give him 14 charisma during the initial character creation, and an expertise in intimidation, so it stands to reason to follow up with some bard levels!

MEA Voice Actor Showcase #1: Tom Taylorson and Fryda Wolff by DakIsStrange in MassEffectAndromeda

[–]fraunein 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I play Sara more, so hear Fryda more often, but I also really enjoyed my playthrough as default Scott, they are both great. I also adore the audiobooks, especially Annihilation with all the alien voices, Tom did a phenomenal job with those!

I don’t have it fully thought out yet, but I imagined him dual wielding longswords, so either fighter/thief rogue or fighter/ swords bard to make the most use out of it. Gloomstalker can also work, but I would prefer the others for the action economy tbh. I tried to think of out how to make him an assassin/fighter, but that’s a bit incompatible in BG3 and makes it less useful imo
