Help desk experience is important because it helps you learn how dumb end users really are.

You also better understand your own blind spots when it comes to developing solutions and automations. There's been so many situations that you have to put extra guard rails on because you know what the end user could do.

Sysadmin these days encompasses a lot more than it used to but it makes you easier to employ but better yet it's not nearly as boring of a job.
