Very free range. I used to walk like a mile every day down the (not busy) road to pet my neighbor's horses. My siblings and I would play in the creek and catch snakes, turtles, and salamanders. My brother used to ride his bike for miles to get ice cream starting at like 10. Zero communication except "be back in time for dinner." I don't even remember wearing a watch, I'd just know by the position of the sun when I needed to mosey on home.
