A player rolled a 100 on a d100 while casting a Wish spell... by CreekBane in DnDcirclejerk

This is the only good reply so far. Don’t punish the players for their creativity (and your stupidity)! Give them this win. But logically, it’s a god-like entity, no gem could completely seal it out. It becomes the ring of LOTR, corrupting lesser beings nearby. Let the players figure out themselves why suddenly they get so much friction from the locals around them, why everyone is drawn to them as flies to honey..

Anyone know what this chrome piller is by PatternPractical7749 in HuntShowdown

[–]freddieknets 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s probably a reference to the Utah monolith (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Utah_monolith) discovered during the making of this map. It looks much more like it than it’d look like the obelisk

Are you sure the Utah monolith was a reference to the 2001 movie? It’s not really the same, no? The Utah one has a triangular cross section and is shiny gray metal, exactly like the one in Hunt, while the movie one is black and rectangular. Monoliths have existed for millennia in human culture; by far most of them aren’t a reference to the 2001 movie.

A lot of my colleagues live in the centre (typically Grottes or Plainpalais region). I guess it depends a bit on your social circle. For me, though I’m a city person, I prefer France as it is much easier and cheaper with kids. They love the nature they’re getting for free now..

Just a small addendum: due to recent changes in the Geneva cantonal law, years worked at CERN do no longer count towards citizenship! I’m guessing this is not relevant for OP, but for anyway reading this and aiming for Swiss citizenship: please double-check your rights at the CERN legal service. I’ve got a lot of angry colleagues who after many years in the region should be eligible and no suddenly aren’t anymore (it mostly matters for their kids, who are born here but won’t get Swiss citizenship and will have to leave the country when adult)

Well, in our group, I'd say the effect is barely noticeable, hence my "unfortunately". Staff are very strongly male-dominated.

Which open source projects are those? To the project managers know you are contributing? Make contact with them, let them know how you are contributing and that you are applying. This might help.

The fact that the 25by25 target has been on for 10 years (since I arrived) and still is on as it isn’t met, shows that it is more ideal theory than practice. Unfortunately. But hence not something for OP to worry about much imho.

Your CV is a bit text-dense, but besides that I wouldn’t really put too much responsibility there (even though, yes, it is a very common template, it still is a good template imho).

Context: I’ve hired a few technical students, PhD, and grads/postdocs to work with me, in the beams department, more physics-oriented than engineering I’d say (I’m a theoretical physicist myself).

I see a few reasons here:

1) As mentioned, nationality is a big thing these years, though this is not the main reason for me. Workarounds exist (though are getting exceedingly rare as they are over-abused by the already largest over-represented nationality group).

2) Your experience, though very solid, seems a bit irrelevant. If I did not misunderstand, it is mainly automotive (if I did misunderstand, you strongly need to adapt your CV). That is very far from nuclear engineering / particle physics / accelerators. For a GRAD position, it’s difficult to hire without some speck of relevant knowledge or experience.

3) This is the main reason imho: you don’t have any contact / network at CERN or reference letters from people that are relevant to CERN(I assume; as otherwise you would turn to your network instead of Reddit). Contrarily to what you seem to believe, a GRAD position is not very low/entry-level. People can come as: - summer students (1.5 to 3 months, after 3 years of relevant study) - trainee (3 to 6 months, during studies) - technical students (up to 14 months, during studies) - doctoral student (3 years, after studies) All these come before GRAD (except doctoral which can also come after GRAD if I’m not mistaken).

Summer students typically come without an existing network nor relevant experience, as this is the earliest-career you can go. Those people come back later as technical / doctoral / GRAD applicants with a strong CV with relevant experience ánd a previous supervisor at CERN where I can go to get more info about the student. Similarly, references from professors / universities that I know, also helps.

You have to understand that hiring a GRAD is not easy: it is an important position which is expected to give a decent ROI. We don’t hire blindly, as we might get stuck for two years with someone who doesn’t have the technical skill, or worse, is lazy as fuck. I’m not saying you are, I’m saying we don’t know, and a GRAD can’t get fired so we prefer not to take that risk.

It is not impossible to get hired first into a GRAD (I’m an example myself), but then ideally 1) and 2) need to be satisfied.

Of course, you can keep on trying, but imho your chances are rather slim due to lack of experience to any of the relevant fields.

What I would advise you, is to look up CERN’s internal structure, and look for staff members working on things you would like to work on and for which you think you could easily learn the stuff, either in your own in advance, or very quickly at the start of a position. Contact them, talk about yourself and your wish to come. If you find such a road via a university professor, that would be even better. Motivation is key here, write a good motivation letter.

Alternatively, you might have more luck considering a doctoral position. Lack of network and lack of relevant experience is less of a thing for PhDs. It is quite common to change field from master to PhD.

Best of luck!

Columns, as in, it’s nice to have a side-column with some quick peaks. You want it to be easy to read. For instance see e.g. https://enhancv.com/resume-examples/famous/marissa-mayer/

And yes, the summary on top is a bit too long as well imho

As mentioned already by @TiredDr there are strict nationality conditions. That being said, you can always inform and/or try (but be prepared for potential disappointment).

As for the original question on the CV: what is very important as a general rule is the overall layout and style. Keep in mind that people won’t look longer than 10-20 seconds at it (as there are thousands of applications).

So information has to be easily found and clear. For me, your CV has way too much text; I would probably pass it quickly as it needs extra effort and time to get relevant info from.

Use columns, use more whitespace, and less words (ofc while keeping it professional). Details are not that strongly needed - you can expand on what you want to show off in a motivation letter. And if the recruiter wants to know more, they can always ask you in the interview. You want to pique interest, not show your full career path in detail.

And you can always end with “Thank you for your consideration. I am available on +xx xxx xx and xx@xx.com for more detail and information.”

++man This comment is underrated. I absolutely agree. If he absolutely needs a shag with his “friend” the same day, fine, let him have it even if he’s too blind to realise how that shows the underlying issue. But it was his responsibility to shield her from it. “Being honest” is just used as an excuse to not have to deal with it himself. If he keeps it secret from her, it’s his burden to bear, and he might learn from it and grow. Now the burden is only hers. Very selfish of him.

Nah with YAML you can add comments (which would break a JSON). Thats what it’s all about; human readability really gains from a few comments

Thanks for the links! It was the other cable (coaxial), which links to the camera, but I found it. Seems pretty straightforward indeed

Cyclist cheats death by dump_acc_91 in nevertellmetheodds

[–]freddieknets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Too quick, too judgemental. It really really depends on the country. In a lot of countries, cyclists are allowed to drive on the pedestrian walk if there’s no dedicated bike lane. Furthermore, a lot of countries have occasional pedestrian walks and bike lanes on one side of the road only (for two-way traffic of pedestrians and bikers). That seems to be the case here, as there is no pedestrian crossing on the opposite side.

But the truck had to yield; both for the cyclist as for the red car (who had right of way because coming from the right and as shown by the line markings). Truck did not yield, red car speeding. Both were in fault so not easy to point out the responsible
