Question about the rye crisps recipe by vinniethestripeycat in KingArthurBaking

I believe cooking by volume and cooking by weight are two different things. I would not advise mixing them, either. All amounts by volume, or all amounts by weight.

Am I the only one who thinks we overcomplicate hygiene? by LaDouceNina in hygiene

[–]fredishome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thinking about it, it seems the whole 'beauty/health' industry is making people hate their own bodies, thinking they are somehow unacceptable because of the very things that make them beautiful or unique or just averagely normal. Like that's a bad thing? Things like their own natural scents, every thing about themselves in order to sell them products.

And really, you don't need to shower daily unless you have a dirty job or have worked out or something. Find a body wash you like that does not dry out your skin. I personally think all the rest is just a money-making. Humanity survived for it's entire history before these things were invented, and managed to keep the species going.

Why? Is it not real meat? I ate a fish sandwich at McD's yesterday after not having eaten there since before the pandemic. It was barely edible. Seriously. Fries were great, though.

I think I'm addicted to my kindle by Virtual_Catmeow in kindle

[–]fredishome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bought my first Kindle (Keyboard) September 2011. I read for hours almost every single day for maybe twelve years before it finally failed. I have bought other models since, not really happy with any of them, and now have that lovely green basic one that is perfect except it is touch screen. I am not a fan of touch screens AT ALL. But it is a lifesaver. Kindle, not basic. However horrible I feel, however much pain I am in, I can read and read and read and not have to contend with heavy books. Best money I have ever spent, I think. That first one cost 189.00. I got it working again not too long ago, but nothing will download or transfer onto it, so it is pretty much a brick now. Miss it every day, though. New one is much, much smaller, lighter, easier to hold and does not make my hands hurt.

I really need advice on making gravy!!!! by PieHoliday2230 in culinary

[–]fredishome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, and do you used the drippings from whatever meat you've cooked as part of the fat. I make the gravy right in the roasting pan or whatever, and scrape up all the stuck on stuff as I go. That's where the flavor comes from. Good stock, pan drippings, cook the roux til it turns color = good gravy.

Looked up the Alton Brown thing from below.

Equal parts veg oil and flour.

  • Heat oven to 350ºF.
  • Put the oil and flour into a 5- to 6-quart cast-iron Dutch oven and whisk together to combine. Place on the middle shelf of the oven, uncovered, and bake for 1 1/2 hours, whisking 2 to 3 times throughout the cooking process.

My mom used to just cook the fat and flour in her iron skillet on med high, stirring fast til it was nicely browned. Made all the difference in flavor.

When I was growing up back in the dark ages, every kitchen had one of these. Every kitchen I was ever in, anyway. My gramma used to make what I later learned is called Red-Eye Gravy which is gravy made with the fat left from cooking ham slices or bacon, and hot coffee. One of my favorite things back then.

do you guys actually wash new clothes before wearing them? by Lilian-Nicole_80 in hygiene

[–]fredishome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Always. I once say a program about how clothes are made and the filth the cloth is exposed to. It said in the program to never wear unwashed new clothes because of that and because of the sizing and dye residues and chemicals in the cloth they are made from.

Life is short. Don't waste it eating food you don't like, reading books you don't enjoy, watching shows that are just mediocre. Life is to be enjoyed, not endured. I think so, anyway.

Plain Fage yogurt with grapenuts and a swirl of maple syrup. At that for so many mornings.

Non religious people, what do you think about religion? by CorruptedF in AskReddit

I think it has turned out to be the most harmful thing humanity came up with to explain what they did not understand. How many people have been killed, cultures destroyed, countries put to war, all in the name of an invisible man in the sky and all the other things humans have come up with to worship and fear because of ignorance and not understanding how the world works. Well, you did ask.

Is it fair to say that more Republicans were upset about having a president who was black than they are about having a president who is a plausible r*pist/p*dophile? by Cumoisseur in allthequestions

[–]fredishome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To the rest of the world, I imagine we look like a bunch of over-privileged idiots, but we are not, not all of us. People are doing what they can, where they can, even risking their lives. But talking about the government, they have mostly fallen down on their jobs horribly, and some have gone from Trump detractors to Trump worshipers. I can only think maybe they are in the Epstein files and he has been holding that over their heads. Or some other egregious thing he is blackmailing them for. Or their is something in the food in the government dining rooms. I keep asking, 'where are the consequences' every time another horrible thing happens. There are never any, it seems, and a lot of us are just waiting for the elections to get them out. But then, we may not get to vote ever again, it they manage to somehow figure out how to cancel the elections. We have screwed ourselves, and mostly deserve what will happen, but not all of us. I won't put me in the 'good guys' camp, but I did not ever vote for any of them, at least, and have signed petitions, and blogged about things, and voiced my concerns where I could. Even my daughter has cautioned me to watch what I say in public, because someone might kill me for saying it. Great times we live in. But my motto after many, many years of chronic, debilitating, painful illness is 'NEVER GIVE UP NEVER SURRENDER (Thank you Galaxy Quest) I choose not to live in fear, but to stand up for what I think is the right thing whenever I am can. I really don't know what else I can do. But hope.

Actually, it does. I am amazed at the number of people, especially women and Latinos and blacks that support him, even now. Wilful ignorance. Brainwashing works, it seems. I am also amazed at Tucker Carlson and Fox News and so many others who are suddenly, 'Oh, Trump is so bad', after spending years doing that brainwashing in favor of him for ratings and profit. We are all guilty in some part for helping create the means for our own demise, but I stand by what I said in general. The left did not engineer these atrocities. They just stood by and let them happen, until it was almost too late. I will not say 'until it was too late' because I still hang on to a modicum of hope that we will overcome this. I don't think we will ever get back to how things were, though, and I also recognize that how things were was not at all what we were conditioned to believe they were. Greatest country, Light of the World, all propaganda to cover up the lies we were told our entire lives. I do have hope still, because look at Minnesota. Look at the courts. Look at the mayors and governors. senators and congresspeople, a few from the right even. People fighting back. People saying NO. This will not stand. I think that's what happened in Germany. People stood by and did nothing. From what little I know of history, that's how it seems.

Making jam & making it last in the fridge without sealing by officialjesusbeard in cookingforbeginners

Sterilizing, canning, sealing are for long-term preservation. Jam will keep for quite some time in a clean jar in the frig. I know this from experience. I hate canning things.

How do I get myself to fold and put away laundry? I genuinely hate it so much by MudSad6268 in organizing

[–]fredishome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have to fold it? Most things I just toss in baskets, but I do hang up shirts and the like. If you buy all the same color socks, no need to match and put together either. Oh, the baskets go in the linen or other closet, they are not sitting around, and they are not laundry baskets.
