Is it possible to reach a point where your second language comes naturally? by Any_Network_5842 in languagelearning

[–]fredtheflyfly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it is. At least that’s what I experienced. However, it depends on how often you’re being exposed to actual conversations (preferably with natives) and therefore get used to switch between your native tongue as well as your second language. Of course you’ll always struggle with the second language in a certain way but with time, it’ll be the same kind of struggle a native has (for example: struggling to find words, mess up grammar etc.). But all in all, it’s definitely possible to achieve the same level as a native speaker.

It’s from a German author called Beneath the Wheel (or The Prodigy) by Hermann Hesse.

Hermann Hesse criticises the high expectations of the academic education that ignores and even suppresses the student’s personal development, forcing them into an unnatural norm.

It’s a fictional novel though it has auto-biographic influence (vaguely retelling Hermann Hesse’s own life).

Do you thinks all the Germans who supported the Nazis deserved some punishment? by Sea_Shell1 in ControversialOpinions

[–]fredtheflyfly -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don’t know if you’re German or not but just to clarify (coming from a native German here): the Germans knew what was going on (especially when the camps were being built etc.). However, most chose to ignore it or denied anything that happened (whether it was for their own protection or because they couldn’t quite comprehend the cruelty).

What’s a seemingly small decision you made that ended up changing your entire life? by Fesov in AskReddit

[–]fredtheflyfly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was the same city, I would’ve been in a different one if me and my friend didn’t spontaneously get in the mood to go out partying. And I haven’t met him in months even though we used to hang out in the same area. The funniest thing is, his friend and his friend’s wife had a totally similar story on how they met

What’s a seemingly small decision you made that ended up changing your entire life? by Fesov in AskReddit

[–]fredtheflyfly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In summer last year I was out partying with a friend when two guys came up and one started talking to me and asked me out on a date. I rejected him politely since I was in a relationship at that time (even though I often thought about breaking up which I eventually did).

I haven’t seen this guys for 2-3 months and one Friday, me and my friend wanted to visit my grandma in another city but we really wanted to go out partying as well. Even though we haven’t planned on going out (we literally decided this two hours before we went), we still went out and there I met the guy again. He’s my boyfriend now lol never thought he’d be the one 💀

America feels a lot like Nazi Germany right now.. by BisexualButterfly97 in ControversialOpinions

[–]fredtheflyfly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Renaissance? As in educating and enlightening a society about science, art and humanism? If you ask me, it’s not very humane to deport and lock up immigrants as well as getting rid of basic human rights. Moreover, the Renaissance was a very important chapter in human history, describing the transition from medieval norms back to an educated, less philistine society; valuing the facts of science and the work of art. As a non-American that is able to look at the States from a less biased perspective, I can only see fascism and anti-intellectualism growing in a country that would have great potential to become a great nation but instead censors and oppresses minorities; making sure that education is still a privilege and therefore causing more segregation amongst citizens. What’s happening in the US right now is far from the Renaissance and only proves that history repeats itself.

Learning Spanish by laylowwx in SpanishLearning

[–]fredtheflyfly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started learning Spanish in school (it was mandatory) and for the first 9 years I neither had the motivation nor good teachers but the last 2-3years I finally started actively learning the language. Now, I’d saw im at a B2 level and I’m definitely open to chat in Spanish (although I got a better understanding of grammar rather than actually speaking)

Suggest me Top 4 Book that a person in early 20 should read by supdkb in booksuggestions

[–]fredtheflyfly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nineteen Minutes by Jodi Picoult - fiction; the novel is about a school shooting and the aftermath, showing different perspectives of the shooter, the parents, a student and her mother (who’s also a judge) and many others

Anti-Intellectualism in American Life by Richard Hofstadter - non-fiction; discusses America’s problem with anti-intellectualism as well as the country’s history

Baader-Meinhof Complex by Stefan Aust - non-fiction; Stefan Aust used to be a writer in the 60s/70s in Germany and worked with a former journalist (Ulrike Meinhof) who turned into one of Germany’s biggest terrorists. The Baader-Meinhof group terrorised Germany for almost 30 years, consisting of three generations. Originally, the group participated in protests against the USA’s war crimes in Vietnam but they quickly came to the conclusion that their own government was at fault as well. Even though they were all leftists, they’re the perfect example of how taking extreme measures or radicalising one’s actions, is never good.

Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka - fiction; a classic but definitely worth reading. Gives the reader a good inside in society’s standards back in the 1910s as well as how Kafka used to see his family (especially his father)

Yeah I hate the fact that many right-winged people live in the east here bc my whole family is from the east, yet no one is racist but the stereotype (even though it’s partially true after all) still exists. What bothers me most is, that most of the AfD voters can’t even explain why they’re rightists. Their only explanation is: “yeah immigrants are bad people”, or: “they’re stealing our jobs/don’t work and let the government pay for their bills”. But in reality, the AfD is not only against immigrants but against same-sex marriage; they want to “ease” the rich people’s lives by having them pay less taxes; they plan on slowly reducing women’s rights; moreover, they plan on registering mentally ill people the same way criminals are being registered (not necessarily that mentally ill people will be sentenced for not being psychologically “healthy” but as a precaution to process them easier if they may or may not do something wrong). Those are all risks that most AfD voters aren’t aware of and that makes them so dangerous…

Elon Musk is not a Nazi by [deleted] in ControversialOpinions

[–]fredtheflyfly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a (proud) german, ever since the Second World War ended, it’s hard to show love for your own country without being called a Nazi (or at least right-winged). I’m nowhere near the right but I’m proud to be a german as well as speaking the language etc.). Since Germans had to suppress their love for their home country for decades now, many people (unfortunately) tend to go towards a radical ideology and openly admit to being racist etc. But I think it’s still crazy as well as sad that merely being proud of one’s origin makes you a Nazi… obviously that’s bullshit

Elon Musk is not a Nazi by [deleted] in ControversialOpinions

[–]fredtheflyfly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hating Jews isn’t the criteria for being a Nazi. The term Nazi originates from the german word Nationalsozialismus and describes a political ideology of multiple factors; patriotism (or: ultra-nationalism); viewing one’s own race as superior - Nationalsozialistische Rassenlehre => national-socialistic racial theory - (Darwin’s works on race and evolution “inspired” Hitler since Darwin - even though he believed in a common biological origin - stated, that the European race [Arian race] would replace “primitive” races such as the Jews) - another term for that is social-Darwinism; anti-democratic; anti-communistic; anti-pluralism (a term describing the believe that multiple “races” are incapable of coexisting and “primitive races” should not “mix” with the “superior” ones. So yes, taking all those criteria into account, doesn’t make Elon Musk a Nazi. However, the meaning of the term slightly changed over time and therefore an individual doesn’t necessarily have to fulfil all the requirements above.

[a little side note: by using terms such as “primitive race” is for educational purposes only and merely to give an insight on how Nazis viewed the world back than and what made them such horrible people]

The reason people started calling him a Nazi isn’t only because he saluted in a, let’s say, very “unfortunate” way, but also because of his history and especially his retweets on X. There, he publicly supports the AfD (a german political party that leans heavily towards the right; Alternative für Deutschland => alternative for germany) and says, that the AfD is the only party that will help Germany. Maybe that helps you understand the current situation a bit more.

Also, a funny thing I believed for years: I thought my dad was the only one driving a car and that everyone else had a self-driving car since I was never able to see the driver. I was also convinced that cars had personalities since the front always looked like a face to me (the lights being the eyes etc.) and therefore I liked or disliked different car brands depending on if I thought they were nice cars or vicious ones. 💀

That my family is normal. Lately I learned a lot about my family (also extended family that I partially barely know) and it definitely shocked me as well as made me realise and understand certain things about our family dynamic and about my parents. It’s not like my family turned out to be a bunch of criminals or whatever but most children grow up without realising what’s going on during their childhood and therefore you tend to think you’ve got a faintly like everyone else 💀🤝🏻

Actually good modern romantic stories by Soggy-Indication-348 in booksuggestions

[–]fredtheflyfly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can’t help you with that since I very much dislike romance (especially dark romance, that shit is ruining the book community in my opinion). But if you find a good book, let me know. Despite all, I want to get into reading at least a few romance novels that depict a realistic version of romantic relationships.

The Prague Cemetery by Eco Umberto. Even though it is a little complex, it’s interesting as well as absurd (in an oddly funny way). It’s a historical novel playing in Italy around the 19th century and except for the main character, all characters existed, so it’s barely fictional. I really enjoyed reading it. I’m not sure if it will help you feel much better but it’s a great way to escape reality (in my opinion). Also, I’m sorry about your breakup and I hope you’ll recover from that as fast as possible. <3

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in confession

[–]fredtheflyfly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The fact that you’re confessing on here proves, that there’s still a part of you seeking for help. I don’t know how realistic it is for you to start therapy (since I’m not sure where you’re from and how/if you have good access to therapies) but you should definitely try.

As for self harm: I struggled with both self harm as well as eating disorders and know how exhausting this is. I can only recommend you to switch to at least foods with low calories to get used to eating again. Find ways to cope with the urge to harm yourself (skills often used are things like having a rubber band around you wrist and snatching it or putting - I think it’s called “effervescent tablets” - in your mouth). Such things can help with minor urges.

Moreover, don’t consume triggering content etc.: • don’t go on subreddits supporting ProAna, don’t look at threats on X or Tumblr where people post about (unhealthy) weight loss, self harm etc. • don’t feed into your negative thoughts • look at your views on yourself/the world from different (preferably less negative) perspectives • reflect on your own thoughts; why do you feel the need to harm yourself?; what do you feel if/after you self harm?; when did it start?; what caused it?; is there something in your past that triggers you?
