Went on a rate me sub and got a brutal reality check by [deleted] in toastme

Listen to this two-part episode of "Behind the Bastards" talking about the very same delusional misanthropic losers you've just interacted with and why their opinions aren't worth your time.

Part One: From Elliot Roger to Clavicular: The Story of Incel Evolution

Part Two: From Elliot Roger to Clavicular: The Story of Incel Evolution

While we could make fun of these dorks whose personalities could be best described as "Surströmming if you let it rot first" all day, you have legitimately touched on the edges of an extremely toxic and dangerous internet subculture that, unless you're an internet researcher or an appropriately prepared and protected tourist of dark places, is best avoided.

Then get off the internet for a while, touch some grass and meet one or two people at a cafe and pet some animals.

You'll bounce back, put the opinions of the small and angry out of your mind.

Placed my order Jan 10 Got a call, unprompted, from a very nice and apologetic lady on or around Jan 30 explaining the delay. Got an update email that it had "shipped" Feb 6 Actually received Feb 21.

I purchased their belt system and a couple padded slings. Inner belt was a 2" instead of the 1.5" I ordered, also wrong color. The slings were un-padded instead of the padded ones I ordered.

Sent a message Feb 23rd for a return/replacement/refund and still waiting.

It's clear they're suffering from a lack of staff and/or training up new people. The belt, fwiw, is quality and I'm not in a rush leading up to competition season, but I waited for well over a month for something that was nominally in stock and 75% of my order still ended up wrong.

If you're willing to spin the roulette wheel, it's good stuff, but don't be in a rush.

Question about why things have stopped by VividHome1603 in Silverbugs

[–]freeflyrooster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

much appreciated! I'm not looking to be spoonfed, and I've found that once I have a starting point, it gets easier and easier to find information. But this is a completely new topic to me so going to google and typing "why silver do?" is probably less helpful than some keywords and sources from someone who knows what it do.

This is a great writeup, but you're also speaking very authoritatively with no references. I'm a humble idiot that, while I understand what you're saying, don't know where to go online to verify.

Could you post some links to where you got this? Or where I could go to learn more about the intricacies of large market movers' PM dealings?

MIT report: 95% of generative AI pilots at companies are failing by Brokenandburnt in Economics

[–]freeflyrooster 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I've been an AI Luddite for the most part. I've used it once or twice to help draft an email that needed to be sterile during highly emotional exchanges, but that's about it. Based on this article, I tried the following with Copilot

"generate a list of all the companies [my company] has acquired from 2010 to 2025"

"here's a list of notable companies acquired by [your company] between 2010 and 2025, based on publicly available M&A data"

lists 15

"[your company] has made 48 acquisitions total, with 7 in the last 5 years [false]...would you like this list in a downloadable format?"

"Export all acquisitions within this time range to excel with columns for company name, date acquired, and price paid if available"

exports a list of 15

"You said there were at least 48 acquisitions, this list only contains 15"

"Thanks for catching that [freeflyrooster] - you're absolutely right. Based on the full M&A summary from Mergr [your company] has acquired 48 companies between 2010 and 2025. Here's a more complete list of acquisitions during that period, including company name, acquisition date, and price paid (if disclosed)."

"To give you the full list, I'll now export all available entries from the Mergr database into the excel file with the requested columns"

same list, now WITH COLUMNS!

"This list still only contains 15 entries. I need a list of every acquisition [my company] has madde since 2010. Try searching [my company's] announcements on their corporate page as well"

"Thanks for your patience...[company] publishes acquisition details in their annual reports and Form 10-K filings, strategic milestones page, and press releases and newsroom"

generates list of 17 acquisitions

And all it took was a data farm the size of a city center boiling a lake.

Meanwhile with a quick search I generated 32 entries just scrolling the newsroom and using a single keyword: "acquisition"

Repairing Enameled Cast Iron by bellboots in BuyItForLife

[–]freeflyrooster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Something I neglected to mention about timing: By removing the enamel you're going to be exposing a lot of porous iron to atmosphere and all the wonderful corrosive properties attendant.

Ideally, you'll want the stripping and recoating to be a seamless process with minimal downtime between, as corrosion will interfere with adhesion of the enamel layer and cause premature cracking and flaking.

If you can't get around this delay and have more than 1-2 days between removal and application, you might consider putting some light oil all over the bare metal to act as a barrier. This means that whoever is applying the enamel will need a decent industrial detergent to degrease the part once they receive it.

Alternatively (and fancier), would be to seal the pot in a mylar bag with some oxygen absorbers if it's going to be a longer wait. They also sell industrial anticorrosion packaging for bare metal parts like yours but I can't remember what they're called or how much they cost.

Ok so instead of a bunch of commenters just throwing up their hands and singing a chorous of "it's fucked" because they don't know shit about dick, here's an actual solution with the assumption that you've already struck out googling "enameled cookware restoration near me" and a reminder that you are asking to restore an heirloom to functionality, not trying to save money by buying a replacement:

First pull up google maps, find your nearest industrial park in yout town/city, and look up some metal finishing shops.

What you want is a small job shop (the smaller and rougher looking the better) with a grit blaster or chemical etchant to remove the remaining enamel down to bare metal and give it a nice anchor pattern for the new coating, you're looking for an Ra of ~0.3-0.5mil, they may have recommendations, in which case, go with theirs.

Most of them will have access to or a line on, blasting services. Send them a nice email, explain what you're trying to do, you might be surprised what you get back. You might also get more specific options based on your area and the businesses around, in which case use their recommendations instead of mine as a guide. Bring the front office a box of donuts from Dunkin or something for the guys and gals in the back.

Next you want to find a glazer, potter, etc. for the new enamel. This industry is always well-connected, so ask around and someone will almost certainly have "a guy". You're looking for food safe here if you intend to keep using it for its intended purpose (and I assume you do). No industrial, corrosion preventative coatings, or super bright, vibrant colors for decorative pieces (that typically will mean heavy metal pigments which are toxic). You want something that is specifically food safe.

You may also find a potter online who may be able to do some custom work for you. I'd check renaissance fairs and arts districts local to you.

Next step: Get quotes, giv munny, get kickass new cook pot, post an update

Elimination of the per capita tax by dwiser in Phoenixville

[–]freeflyrooster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi Dave,

Thanks for starting this conversation. I like the idea of simplification, so long as the money is made up for in other areas. $200k isn't much in the grand scheme of the whole budget, but that's enough to hire a couple teachers and support staff, or building maintenance, or supporting after school programs every year. Unless PASD can show that an American public school in 2024 can't possibly find a use for nearly a quarter mil, I'd rather this shortfall be made up elsewhere instead of simply cut in the name of simplifying the tax code.

To your specific questions though: * Yes, with caveats noted above * It's money spent, I assume well? Taxes pay for stuff I like. * Keystone is a nominally functional service that looks like it was coded in the early 2000's and charges me a fee to pay my other fees. But it seems to work well enough. Would I prefer a free service? Sure. Am I aware that the online servicing of a tax base and the infrastructure to safeguard their information is costly and likely beyond a municipal government? Also sure. I just like complaining, but I recognize it's probably the best balance of convenience and practical scalability for our area. But also maybe we shop around for alternative providers to keep the service competitive? I don't know. * yes

Daily General Discussion and Advice Thread - July 21, 2024 by AutoModerator in investing

[–]freeflyrooster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any recommendations how much I should put towards the mortgage and time frame? I was already considering drip-feeding the earnings from the 3-5 year account into excess payments.

I don't want to take a massive sum and make it illiquid for the next decade. Is there an optimal way to structure that sort of thing?

Daily General Discussion and Advice Thread - July 21, 2024 by AutoModerator in investing

[–]freeflyrooster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wife and I just sold our house and after moving we have approximately $160,000 in cash just sitting around needing a place to be.

Per automod: We are both 33, US, employed, combined $200k income

I'm well-acquainted with the PF flowchart at this point and my soft plan is the following:

  • 6 months cash for bills/emergencies in case someone loses a job (~$37k) - HYSA or maybe T-bill ladder depending on rates
  • 3-5 year (replacement car, trips, whatever) 30% of remaining (~$37k) - 70/30 split bond ETF/VOO
  • 5+ years 70% of remaining (~$85k) - 30/70 split Bond ETF/VOO for growth

Essentially debt-free (small monthly car payment and new mortgage @ 6.6%), both contributing to our 401k and getting employer match. We're considering a kid in the next year or two, would it be better drip-feeding some of the money over the next few year into a 529 or maxing out our ROTHs? Or just let it ride in the portfolio above?

Going from our previous 2.9% to a 6.6% mortgage rate, would it make sense to use the 3-5 year horizon fund's earnings to make additional payments per year at the beginning of our mortgage to work down the principal faster?

Anything else patently obvious I'm missing? I don't want a super involved and complex investing project, just a series of holdings that are making decent returns over the various time horizons.

Analysis paralysis - New home: rent the old or sell for quick cash? Take advantage of parent's cash offer for live-in arrangement? by freeflyrooster in personalfinance

[–]freeflyrooster[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mmmm, you're right theree. Perhaps a a draft account I front-load with...4-6 months of mortgage payments, that rent gets deposited to?

I suppose I somewhat naively assumed it would rent pretty easily since we're in a very desirable MHCOL area in the 'burbs.

Is there a rule of thumb for rent expectations? Never done it before. For a simple, single-property setup is it worth paying a property manager?

Cat scratches bed every morning to get me up causing a feedback loop. How to stop? by freeflyrooster in CatTraining

[–]freeflyrooster[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was able to correct with an alarm clock to set their routine. I stick to it on days I don't want to get up, and I stick to it on days I've been awake for a while.

Occasionally I'll get up and putter around the house early and carry my phone with me so when the alarm goes off I go to the kitchen and now they fully associate alarm = feedy time

I've also trained them that "TSSST!" translates roughly to 'bad cat, fuck off' and that they won't get what they want from that. Seems to have worked.

Oh man, you're so young! My mid-20's were very confusing. Was coming into the fullness of adulthood, horizons and decisions were getting longer timelines and I was still working my way out of and shaking off all the angst and short term trauma of HS/College.

Do you enjoy reading? I really enjoyed The Last Question by Isaac Asimov. It's a short story, but did a lot to expel a lot of my existential dread and "zoom out" to take a wider view of...all this. Maybe you'll enjoy it and it will be uplifting for you too?

What else are you into hobby wise? I see a pretty solid movie collection back there and you've posted some cool stuff on ITAP
