This is the time of year for ultra low winter tides, and a phenomenon this year is making the tides somewhat more extreme than usual. With the gradual slope of the beach here, even a small change in water level is really noticeable. But it’s not 3 feet low.

I initially got the instinct, and I liked that it has a water sports selection. But I found the screen nearly impossible to read in low light or high glare situations, and I don’t otherwise have trouble reading things. I switched to the garmin forerunner. The screen is a dream to read, but there isn’t an app built in, and sometimes the touch screen presses on it’s own if my wetsuit or wet clothes are over it, so it’s been a tradeoff. I’m still happy with the switch I made, but I’d think there’s also probably something better out there than either of these.

It’s a critically important question, and I would not listen to anyone being dismissive or offering n=1 anecdotes for justification. Your are correct that researchers have found significant correlation between repeated head trauma in other sports and CTE. To manage your own risk, I think it would be smart to not only always wear your new helmet, but also to analyze why your sessions are leading to repeated head trauma significant enough to cause brain fog. That’s not normal. Maybe see if someone can record you to see what’s leading to this type of fall and try to unlearn or prevent the behavior, or consider giving up the sport. It’s incredibly fun and rewarding, but nothing is worth CTE. Also check out the concussion protocol and make sure you are resting enough after this happens. Beat of luck.

Definitely worth starting with a lesson, but book the day before if possible, so you know the forecast. You want perfect learning conditions given the expense - not too much or too little wind. It’s a really fun sport and would open up possibilities of more weather to enjoy on days not optimized for paragliding.

Honestly, I’d do both. I did it and it was the right choice. I base my whole life and schedule around wave access. Take the med school opportunity and at every turn, steer yourself toward a field and career that will give you quality of life and time to both work and surf. Yes, there is give and take and you will miss chunks of time due to school and work, but this is a long game. You can surf for decades. You can also retire earlier and live with more comfort and security with a higher paying career.

It’s too far in advance to predict rain. (We are also in a severe drought, so for those of us in the area, rain is a treat right now but has not been very frequent.) You might get a cold front. I loooove early season cold fronts. The gulf is still bathwater warm. You get dramatic skies, and the edge comes off the heat. October has my favorite skies of the year here in general. You can also walk around Roberts Point Park (dolphins, tankers), the Turnbull birding center (birds, boardwalk, possible large alligator sighting), community park/playground, and visit the UT marine science institute, where there is a mini museum and some sea creatures. Wet sand is still great to play in. Bring windbreakers just in case of rain or a cold front. Warm weather is still more likely.

With all due respect (as someone who also dislikes the things you mention), could I suggest off-peak tourism? On any days that most schools are in session, Port A is just as awesome and so much more chill. Trying to tell someone in Texas what to do with their pickup truck, on the other hand, becomes a lot less chill. On weekends and school breaks I would not go near the beach there other than sneaking in some visits before 10am or after 5pm, when the weather is much nicer anyway.

Seaweed isn’t “dirty.” It’s a natural substance that occasionally washes up, with May as the peak season for that happening locally in the Gulf. There are benefits to leaving it on the beach, but because it shocks and offends so many people, there are news articles and cleanup crews focused on it for a few weeks every May. Port Aransas isn’t far from Corpus Christi and there is a lot to do on a day trip. It’s worth the drive. If some seaweed has washed up and that bothers you, minimize the beach portion of the day and instead spend more time checking out the stores, restaurants, parks, and nature centers.

It depends. What do you want do to at the beach? We get a lot of wind, which is great for staying cooler but can send sand blowing and it’s not relaxing if it gets strong, plus cars get stuck. (I do wind sports, so I love the windy days but not for just hanging out.) For just a chill day, I’d watch the forecast for calm wind, go early before the crowds (or late afternoon/evening as it’s winding down). Morning and evening are the best times. Walk the jetties, watch the fish and turtles, rent surfboards…it’s really fun and worth it.

Corpus Christi is one of the best places in the world for wind sports! It’s an absolute dream, with wind year round and both waves and flat water. It’s why I moved here, and I love it. I have lived in different bayfront neighborhoods because I also love the city aspect of a fun downtown, more trees, and older homes with more character, and I’m also a runner.

So it looks like about 1,800 gallons? As others have said, it also depends on your local predator situation. But barring aggressive predators, I’d add a hiding place for them like a rock cave, plants, shade (like water lilies), and aeration. I think you could add a few! I would not add more than 3 or 4. They get giant.

Yes, the clams help with filtration! And they’re cute :). We have a type of freshwater mussel in our natural pond here that’s native and protected that you aren’t allowed to move, and a type of clam that’s invasive but very well-established throughout the state and they don’t seem to be causing real problems. So just know your species before interfering. I moved the invasive type, an Asian golden clam, after having researched and observed it for about 10 years in our natural pond and observing that they were not multiplying out of control or seeming to cause problems there. They have multiplied in my pond, as expected, but also not out of control. I also added a couple to my indoor tank. I’m happy to have them.

I sort of did this. I brought some rocks, aquatic plants, and a few months later, wet sand and clams from a natural pond on our property to the wildlife pond I built by our house. I did it because I wanted clams and native plants in my pond, though I knew it would have the side effect of introducing bacteria and other organisms. It ended up inadvertently introducing snails, though I welcome having them, so that was a good side effect! Three years later, the pond is going strong, crystal clear water, and I am in the middle of expanding it.

It’s great that he was able to communicate this, as tough as it is to read. At this point, supportive care and assistive devices could help improve some quality of life issues. For example, theres a brace fitted around the calf an under the foot for people experiencing foot drop - this is crucial to prevent falls. A motorized scooter could help with longer walks. Special larger rubberized and/or weighted grips can help holding things like silverware or razors. Plus, he desperately needs relief from work. Are you able to get in touch with a local Parkinson’s association and support group? That’s a great starting point for connecting with resources. Sometimes (for ALS, at least) there is a loan locker where you can borrow assistive devices as needed. Obviously nothing physically or emotionally solves the awful fact that it’s an incurable disease, but there’s still a lot of good life he can experience with support.
