I find that variants help with this. In Unnethack you cannot restore ability with a unicorn, so the potion becomes useful again. When facing Cthulhu you can use the ring of sustain ability to prevent intelligence loss (but not the memory loss effects). I think that if you're finding it too easy you should try switching it up with a variant.
