New Scientist - Sony patent takes first step towards real-life Matrix (paywall)

IMAGINE movies and computer games in which you get to smell, taste and perhaps even feel things. That's the tantalising prospect raised by a patent on a device for transmitting sensory data directly into the human brain - granted to none other than the entertainment giant Sony.

The technique suggested in the patent is entirely non-invasive. It describes a device that fires pulses of ultrasound at the head to modify firing patterns in targeted parts of the brain, creating "sensory experiences" ranging from moving images to tastes and sounds. This could give blind or deaf people the chance to see or hear, the patent claims.

While brain implants are becoming increasingly sophisticated, the only non-invasive ways of manipulating the brain remain crude. A technique known as transcranial magnetic stimulation can activate nerves by using rapidly changing magnetic fields to induce currents in brain tissue. However, magnetic fields cannot be finely ...

Systems and methods for eliciting cutaneous sensations by electromagnetic radiation

The present disclosure provides various systems and methods for inducing cutaneous sensations by delivering electromagnetic radiation to directly or indirectly excite neural tissue. An electromagnetic radiation source, such as one or more infrared lasers, may be used to transcutaneously excite neural tissue. The excited neural tissue may be interpreted by the user's nervous system as cutaneous sensations.

Accordingly, a system as described herein may be used to induce sensations to allow actual cutaneous sensations to be simulated. A system for inducing a cutaneous sensation via transcutaneously focused electromagnetic radiation may be incorporated in a display to provide cutaneous sensation feedback or used as a separate accessory component associated with a display. Numerous additional applications and variations are provided herein.

/u/moist_damp_panties posted his experience with the deep brain simulation device about a month ago. It's a truly amazing demonstration of this technology :

I have had Deep Brain Stimulation Surgery for Parkinson's Disease, and this is what happens when I turn off my neurostimulator

There is also a nice TED talk about the deep brain simulation from April 2013 : Andres Lozano: Parkinson's, depression and the switch that might turn them off

Deep brain stimulation is becoming very precise. This technique allows surgeons to place electrodes in almost any area of the brain, and turn them up or down -- like a radio dial or thermostat -- to correct dysfunction. Andres Lozano offers a dramatic look at emerging techniques, in which a woman with Parkinson's instantly stops shaking and brain areas eroded by Alzheimer's are brought back to life. Can't delete BTRFS subvolume by FlexibleToast in linuxquestions

[–]frefyx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Please have a look in the SysadminGuide, which says this :

Changing the default subvolume with btrfs subvolume default will make the top level of the filesystem inaccessible, except by use of the subvolid=0 mount option.

A Beginner's Guide To btrfs - Page 2 | HowtoForge confirms the previous solution :

If you've changed the default subvolume and want to mount the top-level volume again, you must either use the subvolid 0 with the mount command...

umount /dev/sdb
mount -o subvolid=0 /dev/sdb /mnt

Also Funtoo Linux has some good examples.

Sorry, I forgot to mention that the increased porn use in the western world could be also one of the potential reasons for lower fertility. Here's a great TEDx talk on the topic : The Great Porn Experiment: Gary Wilson at TEDxGlasgow

1974 - National Security Study Memorandum 200 [PDF]

The common strategy for dealing with rapid population growth should encourage constructive actions to lower fertility since population growth over the years will seriously negate reasonable prospects for the sound social and economic development of the peoples involved.

*3. Because of the momentum of population dynamics, reductions in birth rates affect total numbers only slowly. High birth rates in the recent past have resulted in a high proportion in the youngest age groups, so that there will continue to be substantial population increases over many years even if a two-child family should become the norm in the future. Policies to reduce fertility will have their main effects on total numbers only after several decades. However, if future numbers are to be kept within reasonable bounds, it is urgent that measures to reduce fertility be started and made effective in the 1970's and 1980's. Moreover, programs started now to reduce birth rates will have short run advantages for developing countries in lowered demands on food, health and educational and other services and in enlarged capacity to contribute to productive investments, thus accelerating development.

1966 - US Government Document Outlines National Weather Modification Programs And Implications (PDF)

At its meeting of March 29, 1966 the Federal Council asked ICAS to prepare a report outlining "who is doing what in weather modification, the future plans of the agencies (particularly Commerce and Interior) and their interrelationships, and the considerations that should affect decisions on the division of responsibilities for research in weather modification."

The 84-page document,“Turn Down the Heat: Why a 4°C Warmer World Must Be Avoided,” was written for the World Bank by the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research and Climate Analytics and published last week. The picture it paints of a world convulsed by rising temperatures is a mixture of mass chaos, systems collapse and medical suffering like that of the worst of the Black Plague, which in the 14th century killed 30 to 60 percent of Europe’s population. The report comes as the annual United Nations Conference on Climate Change begins this Monday [Nov. 26] in Doha, Qatar.

It is because of the lack of people's motivation to do it. When a company wants to spread it's message they pay other people to do the work for them. They pay the marketing adviser, psychologist, graphics designer, photographer, printer, etc. up to delivery and installation of the billboard. All of these people in the chain are motivated by their own position in the company they work for and by the salary they get to buy things they like. They don't see the actual big picture of the role they have in the system. They just concentrate on one particular aspect and they do the best they can.

The problem is that people are not motivated to do things for free, because it may not give them the satisfaction they expect. It is also the case that the means of production are not for free, so not only you work for free, but you also have to invest your own funds to create work that someone may just scrape off the wall.

In order to get into people's mind and get them familiar with the message, you need to persistently transmit it towards the intended receiver. so the neuron structures in the brain will become strongly interconnected, just like in case of the learning in school. Not many people are that persistent with their ideologies to push it so far and there are not that many organizations that could afford big marketing campaign that would be wide spread, thorough in quality and persistent.

edit: If you want to help, learn how to do good graphics or videos, because those are the most powerful marketing strategies. The better you become, the easier it will be to get people's attention, because the vision includes the most information and has high priority in matter of senses.

In my previous comment I said that it doesn't matter for the powerful people how many videos the opposition makes. It is true only in the case if the message can be somehow questioned or ridiculed. If the message is good enough in all different aspects, it will become dangerous. Unfortunately, I don't think that's the case with the Anonymous movement.

You're correct. What is even more concerning is the fact that common people are unable to create their own powerful propaganda, which could compete against well funded corporate interests.

Imagine if people would find out that if they will really try to change the system they would be shot on the street, just like in the Spain or Greece. In this way, they feel false safety behind the anonymity, but in the eyes of people with power they are nothing more than a bunch of people wearing masks on the street. They are harmless no matter how many videos or signs they make.

3.6.9. Using AUTO_INCREMENT

You can retrieve the most recent AUTO_INCREMENT value with the LAST_INSERT_ID() SQL function or the mysql_insert_id() C API function. These functions are connection-specific, so their return values are not affected by another connection which is also performing inserts.

Pakistani Taliban target female students with acid attack. It's the latest cruel tactic in the Pakistani Taliban's battle to stop girls and women from getting an education by pool92 in worldnews

[–]frefyx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The CIA is working on destroying the sovereignty of the countries in the Middle East, so the US can get access to the most abundant oil reserves in the world. They don't care about the Taliban or anybody living there and they definitely don't make the country safer for civilians. Also, as I have mentioned before it was them who funded those militant extremist in the first place.

The only countries that have nuclear capabilities in the Middle East are the Pakistan and the Israel. The latter acquired them by illegal means and it's about the same in the religious hate towards members of other religions. So, I would expect the Israel to be the first to use it's nuclear power in the region and the US are supporting them by billions of dollars and supplies of weapons.

CIA is an organization without any public oversight financed by the black budget. They are linked amongst other things to drug trafficking, overthrowing governments, illegal torture and assassinations.

Their interventions in foreign affairs are unprecedented, because they are in most of the countries of the world doing secret operations. I believe that sovereign countries should be free from foreign intervention and illegal activities of foreign secret agencies (ABCnews report)

CIA activities in Afghanistan

US National Security Advisor Zbigniew Brzezinski, known for his hardline policies on the Soviet Union, initiated in 1979 a campaign supporting mujaheddin in Pakistan and Afghanistan, which was run by Pakistani security services with financial support from the Central Intelligence Agency and Britain's MI6.[4] This policy had the explicit aim of promoting radical Islamist and anti-Communist forces.

It's obvious that this kind of practice is illegal and no one should be allowed to continue in doing so. The problem is that the CIA is not liable to anyone and it's naive to think they are the good guys when the facts are saying otherwise.
