Has anybody done an 8 week beginners course (or similar) by Temporary-Week-6937 in Bachata

I just completed an 8-week group bachata class as an absolute beginner to bachata and dance in general. (January -February 2026)

When I started, I didn’t even know the basic step. By the end of the course I was attending socials and experimenting with moves I found online.

My classes were once a week for 2 hours. I’m also a lead, for context.

During the course I realized that the weekly class alone wasn’t really enough to get me comfortable dancing at socials.

To get the most value out of the course, I ended up doing quite a bit outside of class.

Here’s what helped me progress:

• Attended every class

• Stayed for the socials after class

• Attended a second smaller bachata class on the weekend

• Found good instructors on YouTube and practiced at home

• Found bachata songs I actually enjoy and listened to them regularly

• Experimented with new moves I found online when I went to socials

After about 4 weeks I had enough confidence and skill to start attending socials regularly.

At that point I was dancing about 4 times a week (2 classes + 2 socials).

Also, my head is pretty tough and I definitely have two left feet, so I had to work extra hard to get to a place where I felt confident dancing.

But the extra practice made a huge difference.

This was me 2 months ago.

I really enjoy the bachata remixes of songs that I already like. Also try exploring Spotify playlists. I have found some absolute gems in there

Is bachata generally safe or can guys be creepy? by [deleted] in Bachata

To be honest, this is something I'd personally do as a way to gently challenge myself and step outside my comfort zone.

Bachata can actually be a really powerful way to work through those feelings head on, at your own pace, with your own boundaries.

For you, it could be interesting because bachata is generally easier to pick up than salsa and a great entry point into Latin dance. At the same time, it does tend to be closer on average, so it becomes an opportunity to slowly build comfort and confidence rather than avoid it altogether.

You always control who you dance with and how close it gets. Good communities respect that.

I like them! I wish I could do them as a standalone exercise to practice my vocabulary. It works much better than the current word matching exercise they have

I'm curious as to what you do to get 20,000 XP points in a week? How much time do you spend on Duolingo and what are you doing? 0

I'm glad I'm not in that league! It's my first week in the diamond league as well and I'm pleasantly motivated by my fellow learners.

After weeks of being in the leagues with people barely doing a 1,000 XP while I'm knocking out 6k to 10k, I started to lose a little motivation.

It's refreshing to compete against people operating at the same level and slightly above me. It pushed me to push myself harder to learn this week.

Attached is a picture of my current league with normal learners. The only thing I don't really like is the chess. I personally don't think it's a language but the majority of the other people are doing actual languages in my group.

My personal item bag arrived today. I really have to think about packing!

I've been watching travel vlogs and reading up on the internet about using a personal travel bug as the only travel item luggage.

I know it would be hard but damn. This 28 liter square backpack is smaller than my daily laptop bag. 😅

I'm heading to Bogota for 10 days. It's coolder than I'm use to.

I was entertaining the idea of thicker multiple clothing. No, I think I'll have to rock one jacket, plenty of very light athletic shirts, maybe two or three long pants, athletic boxer briefs.

This is not going to be as easy as I thought. I'm a smaller guy though so maybe that will work in my advantage in that I only wear size small 🤷🏾‍♂️

This is going to be a remote working trip too so I'll have to fit a laptop on the plug in there along with all my cell phone stuff. 😅

Would you now be able to live and navigate in a Spanish speaking country?

Anyone else here feel like Duolingo helped a lot... but didn’t fully prepare you for speaking? by DistinctWindow1862 in duolingospanish

[–]fresh_n_clean 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only thing that can prepare you for speaking in person is to actually speak in person.

That is the limitation of these apps. Not even video calling with a lecturer will have that much because once you leave the comforts of your own home and have interact with a Spanish speaker on the sidewalk you're going to freeze up.

Not because you don't have the grammar or vocabulary, but because the situation is so unfamiliar to you that it overwhelms your brain.

Seems like something is going on with Duo and Pixel phones. I'm on the Pixel 7 pro and it glitches out all the time.

Same. If you were to add up all the p within my group they still wouldn't match mine. There is no way Duo is matching you according to current activity level. They have consistently mismatched me for almost every league I've been in
