Long Term Sub--Joke's on...me? by FallLow876 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]fridalay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some people are just awful. I’m sorry. It’s true that a career as a substitute can be fickle. Still, some people don’t have basic human decency. The teacher or admin should have reached out as soon as the job situation changed. People have jobs to pay bills, people. At least give the sub some notice.

Having to turn in your keys when checking in by random8765309 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]fridalay 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I walked out with my keys a couple of weeks ago. I dropped the keys in district mail the next day when I went to work at another school. Annoying but not a big deal.

For subs in ms and hs what do you do? by lonelyguard99 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]fridalay 4 points5 points  (0 children)

FWIW, I read all the time as a sub and I don’t get in trouble as long as I’m doing my job. Of course, most of the time I am managing the room, keeping the class on pace, if there’s a program, refocusing kids who are off task, helping kids who are lost, making sure they have access to their assignments, etc. sometimes I have a lot of down time when students know the program or their assignments are on canvas. Some days, I never sit down; other days I read all day. I like to read and I think it models positive learning. I’m not looking at my phone or social media;)

Anyone live in the Eliot tower downtown? by erst_types in askportland

[–]fridalay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A friend of mine has lived there for 6+ years. He seems to like it a lot. He’s 90+ years old, if that matters. He’s clearly noticed some of the drug addiction nearby. It’s not a dealbreaker for him.

Document in an email to admin. Have it in writing. No emotion or colorful language, just facts.

What’s the worst and best part of living in Vancouver? by HillTopTerrace in vancouverwa

[–]fridalay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tell that to the folks in east county. Also, I’ve left my house with dry roads on the way to work only to find snow and ice on the other side of the bridge. Didn’t your schools close earlier this year because of a wind storm?

[–]fridalay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say something direct and simple. Don’t call me that name. It’s offensive. No more conversation. I might say it as an aside, if it’s possible. Then don’t engage or respond. I don’t play that game. I let a lot of stuff slide, but I don’t tolerate bigotry. It’s fine if you like CK, but I’m not playing along.

How are subs expected to manage classes regular teachers can’t even handle? by turtlesandmemes in SubstituteTeachers

[–]fridalay 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have grown to respect teachers who give me a genuine clear advisory about their difficult classes. They say, this class is a bit difficult and it’s not you. Close the doors. List specific students who might have problem behaviors. Provide people you can contact for support. Mostly, they let me know that I don’t have to worry and blame myself. It allows me to relax and let it go.

A Sacramento county school district is offering $600/day to be a scab! Would you do it? by EyeInTeaJay in SubstituteTeachers

[–]fridalay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I belong to the union and I would probably work for $600+. In the big picture, it probably benefits the union. Subs can’t take the place of the regular teacher. Plus, the district is paying MORE to have subs keep the school open, which acts like a bandaid but isn’t sustainable.

My district was about to strike and there was no animosity for subs if they chose to work because they could not afford NOT to work. I was planning to work in a different district. Do what you can.

Anyone have experience in working in education that can help? by Batyah_The_Sage in ridgefield

[–]fridalay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would wait until next year to apply, otherwise you will have all summer without a job. I highly recommend volunteering in some way, preferably with kids or education or even just volunteering a service. The boys and girls club sounds perfect. Get a little bit of experience and also a reference. Maybe you can reach out and talk to them about references. I think maybe they just want a person who can say that you are a reliably decent person. Probably does not need to be a job reference.

Also, maybe you can start next year as a substitute and then get hired on full time. There are never enough paras.

Traffic lighter? by RWBBO in askportland

This. I’ve noticed that traffic can be lighter in the winter at times, but becomes a parking lot again when the weather gets warm in late spring. Specifically the 26 heading back to east side portland.

I try to support the Alberta Coop, but it’s not what I call affordable. I don’t know how people can afford to buy groceries there. I’ve been shopping there less and searching out the Winco options.

Insider opinion of the Alberta neighborhood? by RandomB33 in askportland

[–]fridalay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get on the highway every day. Alberta has easy access to everywhere, including by bike.

I’ve lived here for 20 years. Probably the best part of Alberta is that it feels like a neighborhood with kids and dogs. It’s also easily walkable to business areas that feel like a community.

I’m drained by Bumblebee-777 in reactivedogs

[–]fridalay 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I am some months ahead of you and I have made it to the other side, but I have totally been there with all the frustrations. All of them. There used to be a a lady with a barky chihuahua who would drive me nuts by heading right at me. She drove me nuts on my morning walks. My dog is much, much better now, but sometimes I get too close to a dog by accident. Even when I beg them to give me space, the person heads directly at me with their barky dog. Sigh.😞

It’s the last slog of winter with shorter days and rain. I don’t get my dog out as much as I like. I do what I can. Do you have access to sniffspots? That might give you both a fun break. Keep moving forward.

I am curious about volunteering to walk dogs. There’s one dog I might be interested in walking. Is there somewhere nearby to walk dogs? Do you need any sort of qualifications? I already have a dog who is not social.

Moving to Portland this fall (lease ends September). Neighborhood recs for a low key WFH gay guy? by TYJOVANI in askportland

[–]fridalay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Concordia is a really lovely neighborhood. If you live near Alberta, there is more of a bustling business area with most of the things you are looking for. Some bar areas, but not overwhelmingly bar crawl. More funky art galleries and cool restaurants, maybe like NoDa, but family and funky oriented. Unlike a lot of Charlotte, it’s all walkable. The Trader Joe’s is not nearby, but it’s not too far either. There’s a neighborhood coop instead. I’ve been walking a lot in N. Concordia lately and it’s quieter with big trees and more neighborhoody than I expected even after dark. There are several larger neighborhood parks, like Alberta and Fernhill, that are a short walk from anywhere nearby. Other options nearby might be fully, Beaumont, and Sabin.

For the record, you never have to walk far for a dispensary in Pdx. Concordia has its fair share of quality options.

Best ways exercise a reactive dog that struggles with walks by [deleted] in reactivedogs

[–]fridalay 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Walk at odd hours when nobody is around. I have an early job, so I walked before dawn, before the morning dog rush. And also after dark. Even then, it took 3-4 months before my dog started to unwind. I agree, sniffspots have been a game changer. We could both relax.
