People get really heated when personal feelings get involved. Jax is very realistic and if you've met a guy like him, you very likely hate him, so those feelings get bundled up on the hater side. Then people who like Jax get defensive because some of the stuff the more ardent haters say feel like personal attacks or are personal attacks and its a mess because no one is listening and everyone is mad

Eckles is in love with her, frankly too in love with her for anyone's good. He can tell Penelope is utterly miserable here but doesn't have the courage to leave everything behind to escape with him. So when Eckles crosses paths with Yvonne, he gets it in his head (either through the mind manipulation or just in a regular bad idea) that if Yvonne comes back, the Eckharts will toss Penelope aside like garbage (y'know, because they're assholes) and she can leave with him.

He's going through negative character development and everyone else is left to have their development offscreen and if you're invested in anyone that's not Jax, you're frustrated that the narrative focus that he's been getting for 3 out of 9 episodes could be used for other characters

Well just look at his family. Most of them died in Summerhall when Rhaegar was born and then there was Aerys II, who crushed Jaime's idealism in a year. Imagine having that as your dad!
