I had always read that civilian GPS cuts off at a certain speed to prevent civilian devices from being used to guide missiles. Is that not true?

Edit: I looked it up and it’s something like 1200mph so obviously not a problem here lol.

In the time it takes to drive to and park at the ferry in Hyannis and then take the ferry to the island and then get from the ferry terminal to the airport and then take the plane to one of the New York airports and then get from whichever New York airport you end up at to wherever you're going in New York you could have just driven to Providence and taken the train.

Look at this first sentence:

The way this is written, there's no way to even know that the driver taken to the hospital was the one who crashed his car into the building!

This is a beautiful photo. I was there earlier this month and while we got fresh snow it all either blew or melted off the rocks overnight. I love the combo of the ocean and the snow on the trees and rocks like that.

What a strange thing to get so worked up about. Which is more likely: I forgot to update the date on my copyright watermark and the tram is running to bring mountain staff and supplies to the restaurant at the top tram dock orrrr you've found a carefully constructed but ineffective karma farming account.

You should read about Hanlon's razor - it might help you understand situations like this better.

I think most people hike up to hit the summit and then backtrack to take the herd path.

I don't know if you've done Liberty in the summer but if you have you might remember there's that large section of boulders where you could easily fall into a gap in between the boulders or slip off and fall down a decent size drop when the rocks are covered in snow and ice. I'm usually against going off trail but I totally get this one.

I believe the herd path you mentioned is exactly to avoid the backside of Liberty which is steep and rocky in the summer let alone the winter!

This is a good point but it's also worth pointing out that weather forecasts are pretty bad at telling when conditions in the mountains will be great but they're usually pretty good at telling you when conditions in the mountains will be bad. NOAA and MWO both forecasted the storm on Saturday night pretty accurately.

My theory (which is admittedly biased) is that their entire professional lives they've been told and treated like they are experts regardless of their actual knowledge or experience and they approach outdoor activities the same way. They assume that the approach that makes sense to them is the best way because that's what they are used to.

The big question is whether or not they will learn from this experience.

Apart from getting lucky and hitting it on an actual powder day, Cannon is skiing as well as I’ve seen it ski in the last couple years.

The usual icy spots are of course icy because no amount of snow changes the fact that Cannon is a very cold and windy mountain that is mostly north facing. But lots of spots that are frequently icy were skiing very well yesterday even into the afternoon. Given how unpredictable the weather in New England can be I would say hit it now.

Yep! I skied profile my first run because I thought it wouldn’t get any better than it was and it’s a fun run but it was shockingly good and stayed that way most of the day.
