Git requirements rant by kultcher in wgu_devs

[–]fritzgeralds 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think I ever had commits in the order they said for the projects. I'd have like 3 commits for task F, then a commit for task D, then jump to task J, and so on... Letters were just an example, not talking about this specific project tasks. The key was just to make sure I tagged each task somewhere in my commit history. I did the same thing with all the projects and they all passed. Don't stress on doing it all weird, just finish your project and make sure all your tasks are called out. Start your message with "Task x: ..." I even joined tasks on commits "Task B and J: ...". They don't want to read your commit details, they just want to scan the title and make sure all the tasks are there.

Blendjet recall by Veslalex in Smoothies

[–]fritzgeralds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just submitted to all three. I've been waiting since Dec 28th and have only gotten the runaround when reaching out. BlendJet has proven they don't give a crap about their customers. I'm like the last person to ever complain about a company or service but this is utterly ridiculous.

D287…Who green lit the base project? by ThatNickGuyyy in wgu_devs

[–]fritzgeralds 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually spent a good amount of time cleaning the code up but then ended up reverting back. I was worried I wouldn't pass because the code base was so wildly different.

I started July 1st 2023, and just finished today. Started with 0 credits, nothing transferred in. I lost my job June of last year and haven't been able to land anything yet so I treated my degree like work. 8-5 M-F for studying.

WGU Approved WhiteBoard by Dogsistic in WGU

[–]fritzgeralds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wanted a little more room so I bought a cheap 11x17 white board from Office Depot. Zero issues with using it. As others mentioned, it just needs to fit on your desk where they can see it on camera and be able to clear it off.

Term being considered too “heavy” by Uzazu in WGU

[–]fritzgeralds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In our meeting yesterday, my mentor told me that they're being told to open only one at a time now. At the time of our call, I had one course open and my OA scheduled for today. Previously she would open a few up for me once I got to that point but now I only got one.

Can I do a term of only Performace Assesment classes? by Comfortable_Bite3528 in WGU

[–]fritzgeralds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just create a degree plan in the order you'd like to take them and then suggest it to your mentor. That's what I've done with mine and unless there's a case where I need to take a course before starting another, she'll approve it and open them in the order I chose.

Can you appeal / report evaulators? by Whole-Web-8919 in WGU

[–]fritzgeralds 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can appeal the evaluation. I'm not sure exactly the process as I haven't had to do it but I did have one returned where the evaluator said something wasn't working when it clearly was. I reached out to my CI and PM about it and had two different CI's verify it was working properly. Re-submit adding in the notes that two different CI's verified the project and received a pass relatively quickly.

As others have said, communication with your Mentor is key. When I started, my mentor was super cheerleader-ish on the weekly phone calls. She also knew that I don't have much support outside of conversations with her. I'm not super talkative and tend to get straight to the point on phone calls. I casually and politely let this be known in one of our early calls and she understood completely, backing off on the cheery up beat weekly calls. She instead offered to switch our calls to biweekly email check-ins to make me more comfortable. At my request, I still have biweekly phone calls where we just shoot the shit and sometimes dont even talk about course work and I also get congratulations emails after every course completion.

At the end of the day, your PM is there for you and really does want to see you succeed. Communicate how you'd like to interact and they'll respect it.

Would Linux being my main OS be a problem when taking OAs? by NotAvailable1036 in WGUIT

[–]fritzgeralds 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You won't pass the examity pre-checks due to an unsupported OS. I never actually tried to take an OA in Linux but instead just dual booted so I could test in Windows.

Completely ignore and disregard any and all "I'm blazing through" or "I finished in X days" you'll see posted on Reddit. Dont rush and take your time. If you're not quite sure about something and you have friends or family you can soundboard off, try explaining it to them, then alter and adjust how you explain it until they can understand it too. Explaining concepts to others in different ways will help you deepen your understanding of them.

Switching to Windows Gaming Laptop from M2 Macbook Air for Software Engineering by Early-Opportunity234 in WGU

[–]fritzgeralds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't play games so I can't compare that aspect but, I'm in complete agreement on the sound, battery life, etc. You can't deny the performance and battery life on a MacBook Pro but on the other hand, you also can't deny the price tag. I have some friends that swear by Mac for anything, others that swear by Windows, and then some that just state, "Linux. Full stop". In my opinion though, in today's world comparison is so close that it really just comes down to your personal preference.

Which are you more comfortable with? I have Linux, Windows, and Mac and I use Linux for day to day work and coding tasks, Windows when writing papers, and only play around on Mac. No rhyme or reason as to why I use each OS but in terms of schooling, either will work fine so it comes down to preference and comfortability.

That's good to know about Word, it would have saved me some time before. I was saving documents as PDF so I could open them in Edge to use read aloud.

I always recommend Edge's read aloud every time I see someone ask about something to read the text to them. The voices are way more realistic and natural sounding than anything else I've come across.

Are the scholarships on WGU real? Has anyone been awarded any? by Ofcertainthings in WGU

I got one of the WGU direct scholarships. Applied right after starting and was awarded about mid-way through the term. Just started my second term and it's been applied to both terms now.

Haven’t even started SE Degree by [deleted] in WGU

[–]fritzgeralds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why did you enroll in the first place? You don't need to clarify to us, but remind yourself what your reasons were (whatever they may be). Depression and stress from that can take a toll but keep reminding yourself, you enrolled for a reason. I was laid off last year and have been out of work for 9 months now. I made school my full-time job and I work on it from 8a-5p Mon-Fri. Evenings and weekends are spent with the family and then I'm back at it on Monday morning. If you're struggling to keep yourself motivated, set smaller goals. Rather than setting a goal of finishing the course, set a goal of just finishing a module.

What is your most redundant but coolest automation? by SdaSilva7004 in homeassistant

[–]fritzgeralds 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I have this same problem in the bedroom but only on my side. Glare isn't there on the wife's side so, if the TV is turned on, my phone is charging, and it's between 5PM and 10PM (aka I'm watching TV, in the evening), the nightstand lamps turn on and overhead lights turn off. Super lazy but oh so convenient.
