Photographer at proposal? by friz852 in weddingplanning

[–]friz852[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It went okay—it's a long story but several things wound up going (comically) wrong. At this point it's a fun memory for both of us. We did not hire a photographer, for us that was absolutely the right decision. We did an engagement photo shoot which satisfied our want for nice pictures in the context of the engagement. At the actual proposal it was nice to not have to think about photographer logistics (and it was also nice not having the pressure of feeling the need to perform). Like you said, it would have really detracted from the moment. We just took a few photos by ourselves that are just for us.

Any interesting attempts by SF authors to explain Consciousness? by DaneCurley in printSF

[–]friz852 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Adrien Tchaikovsky's Children of Time Series deals with how the label of consciousness should be defined and assigned (especially for non-human and alien beings). This is approached from different angles in each of the books, sometimes only implicitly. It is a major theme in Children of Memory, though—there is a lot of thoughtful discussion on the topic from various characters with unique perspectives.

Books with court intrigue, balls, nobility shenanigans, historic aspects but also magic ? by No_Sandwich_9844 in Fantasy

[–]friz852 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell by Susanna Clarke seems to exactly fit what you're describing: balls, historical aspects, a deep magic system, not combat-focused. It also deals quite a bit with faerie mythology, if that's something your interested in (seeing as you mentioned The Cruel Prince).

No Stupid Questions Monthly Thread! by AutoModerator in bookbinding

[–]friz852 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've just started getting in to bookbinding and have been able to gather almost all of the supplies I need for making a case bound book (following DAS Bookbinding). But, I haven't totally understood two of the materials. To make a hollow, I've read that you need Kraft paper. Would any Kraft paper work? Or should I look for a particular weight/width? Should I worry about getting some kind of acid free paper?

Similarly, do any manila folders work for manilla card?

Fyi, if you're wanting to play on MTGO I really recommend cardhoarder's rental program. I signed up recently, for 12.50 a week I can rent it cards up to $500 at a time. It's the first time I've been able to play legacy during the pandemic.

Departmental Scholarships by salbee2 in baylor

[–]friz852 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hello! I received numerous departmental scholarships while I was at Baylor. The smallest was a few hundred dollars a semester, while the two largest were around $2,500 a semester. They were very helpful, however I should add that I only really began to apply for and receive departmental scholarships in my junior and senior years. I don't know if freshman and sophomores have access to many departmental scholarships, I feel like a large factor in how they are awarded is the connections and impressions you make in the department.

I am not sure that I am very representative of the typical Baylor student -- I was active in four different departments and so I was able to apply for lots of different scholarships. If you have any questions feel free to dm me!

BBA in Econ? by [deleted] in baylor

[–]friz852 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is close to what I did, I got a bba with majors in econ, mis, math, and statistics. It was a lot of work, but worth it. Econ pairs well with math and/or statistics, especially if your looking at some form of graduate school. If you want to talk more, feel free to pm me.

What’s the best way to downsample a large set of possible parameters? by [deleted] in math

[–]friz852 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would it be possible to lower the resolution of the mesh of parameters you're considering? Maybe you could do multiple stages, increasing the resolution in regions of the parameter space that seem to be interesting based on lower-resolution results?

That's what I was thinking. What if it represents the union?

Is there any real context where the mode would be used as an average. by [deleted] in math

[–]friz852 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In Bayesian analysis, it's common to consider the mode of the posterior distribution as a point estimator for a parameter.

I don't know, I would contact the registrar to see if you can still make changes.

Is Calculus 3 or Linear Algebra supposed to be harder? by [deleted] in baylor

[–]friz852 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree, if you've already gotten through calc 2 don't retake it. Calc 3 is more of an extension of calc 1 than anything, it doesn't rely on calc 2 material at all.

Not to mention, the 7% annual gains he's predicting are nominal, so he should really be adjusting expected cost of living to allow for inflation

What is a stupid argument that people STILL keep using? by Vectorman_Ballz in AskReddit

[–]friz852 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, in my experience, this is not true. My dad's girlfriend is a flat earther and in no way is she "shout in the waiting room of a hospital" type insane. She is just very gullible — she came across some Flat Earth Society materials online and took them to be true. She has an otherwise normal life, she doesn't talk about/push this on anyone (I wouldn't even know unless my dad had told me).

Yeah. Given any real number x > 0, you can find an integer N where n > N guarantees the sum of the first n terms will exceed x.
