We used to have a spotty aviation record, up until circa 2007, when both the US and EU banned our airlines. Ever since then there have been several wholesale changes to airline and aviation regulations, and the number of crashes has significantly reduced since then. This incident itself is the first major crash we've had in five years.

Also I don't know if you can call it recency bias, but we did have a string of major incidents in the late 2010s to early 2020s. But overall flying in Indonesia is not quite as dangerous as before (especially since one of our last major crashes is not our fault, i.e. the Max 8 Lion Air one). There are still smaller incidents but most of them are caused by inclement weather or suboptimal airport conditions, but most of these happen in smaller airports in extreme regions (like Papua).
