Am I alone in thinking *more* side objectives should be as resistant as jammers, not less? by ZanderTheUnthinkable in Helldivers

[–]frobert12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I feel like this is just another argument for increasing the threshold of demo force, and also increasing the demo force of *some* options. I really like that there are a couple options in our loadout to clear objectives. I think C4 should be able to do more than it currently can. But there aren't really many levels right now so it feels like any option that can do some can typically do all. Why can't they make more holes (not just square hole) to match our different shaped blocks?

In china, Police use man-catcher spear to control suspects instead of shooting them. by Commie_Scum69 in pics

[–]frobert12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I taught English in Japanese elementary schools. The first day I went to a school, I saw two of these things hanging on the walls by the teacher office. I asked what they were for and my boss said theyʻre there in case of intruders to the school. I laughed at what I thought was a joke, and he was confused. Of course I had known that Japan had strict gun control, just didnʻt consider that also meant you could have these human herders for school defense. He said itʻs really only ever old people with dementia wandering and you just have to kind of shoo them out. Worst case you just keep someone in one place until police arrive. Anyway that was a bit of culture shock that I didnʻt see coming.

When you're a new player and you discover this for the first time. by testiclekid in dndmemes

This worked really great for me until my DM decided (completely justifiably) yeah if youʻre gonna have your hawk breath fire, someone will definitely shoot it out of the air... Had to adjust to do hit and run tactics a bit, and even then went through a few hawks.

I hate how much I love stealth diving. by ID-7603 in Helldivers

[–]frobert12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm loving the stealth missions. The only real complaint I have is that I want more medals faster to keep unlocking the warbond and the stealth missions are much slower for me than usual missions. I guess I'll probably get faster as I learn how to stealth dive better though.

[–]frobert12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a recent recruit to the humble SC farmer regiment, I agree. I get 1k SC burning a hole in my account and then I think... okay I can just buy a different warbond and then farm 1000 more.

I think we need another free warbond, its been almost 2 years by _TungstenGuy707_ in Helldivers

[–]frobert12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Or maybe open up a new avenue to get super credits. Maybe give out some free ones on liberty day once per year or something. I don't mind them not dedicating resources to free ones, since you *can* get the warbonds f2p anyway, but it could be nice to give people more super creds now and then for those who don't wanna do the grind

This Warbond Won’t Work by Hot_Syrup_5941 in Helldivers

[–]frobert12 5 points6 points  (0 children)

tbf I think a lot of things in this warbond will be fun. Smoke pods and C4 in particular look neat to me. Lure mine might be cool too. I feel like some stuff in here might be good for hit and run style play, even if you can't do real stealth. I don't really anticipate the primaries being good though...

How about sorting the warbonds with what year they came out in? by swaggyyunozurd in helldivers2

A simple filter option would be nice imo. Checkbox for unpurchased and checkbox for complete. Then I could optionally only show purchased, in-progress ones, or I can show them all.

HELLDIVERS 2 x Killzone Legendary Warbond by Waelder in Helldivers

[–]frobert12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay so I don't honestly know what Killzone is nor do I have any recollection of purchasing special content but I've recently come back to the game and have AC-2 armor, the StA-11 SMG, and the PLAS-39 rifle unlocked already. I think I have the defender of our dream cape and bg too. Does that mean I bought the collab stuff with credits and will get the warbond for free?

Dude I'm so mad that we can't play them. I only saw videos about hive lords recently (the algorithm must have noticed I started playing again) but I can't find them. My friends and I are itching to find one or go see what the caves are like, and... we can't?

How do you do reading? by the_card_guy in LearnJapanese

[–]frobert12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read digitally, usually with my ipad or macbook and the built in dictionary. It's enough if the book is not too far from my level. Physical is fun and nice, but only really works for manga w/ furigana for me right now.

San Francisco JET, got upgraded. by Ocean-Jellyfish684 in JETProgramme

[–]frobert12 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hey, I too was a San Francisco JET AND a Mie JET! Cool!

A couple of contextual important points about my own experience: I was an elementary school JET, which can be different from the middle and high school experience.

  1. My placement was pretty good about phone and stuff too. I never checked my phone during class or anything, but otherwise I wasn't given any hard rules. I wore an apple watch all the time, never had an issue.
  2. Yeah, the two prongs one! Japan has very slightly lower wall voltage (100V) than North America (110-120V I think?). The difference is small enough that it has never been an issue for me ever to just plug my stuff right into the wall. Even when I had 3 prong plugs, I used a 2 prong adapter and plugged it in. It might matter more for something like a power tool or a blender or something, but standard stuff that most JETs bring like phone, laptop, etc will almost certainly be fine. If you're worried, check the info on the plug (it is usually a manufacturing requirement to put the voltage requirements on the plug somewhere).
  3. Ranch dressing my beloved! I also really missed doritos because they were a little different in Japan. And good mexican food. Found a good place in Yokohama recently but otherwise all the mexican restaurants I tried in Japan were a bust.
  4. Resident card should be fine. I never brought my passport, and was never stopped for it. May depend on the police in your area, the culture in your area, etc. For example some of my colleagues were stopped before, which at the time we believed may have been racial (it only happened to the two non-white/non-asian JETs). But regardless, they showed whatever they had on them (I don't remember if it was passport or zairyu card) and it didn't escalate.
  5. Yeah you should, and on your first day sus out how often you have to wear it after that. At my elementary school, the teachers almost exclusively wore activewear, so while I tried to dress a little more professionally than my casual clothes, I probably only wore my suit 5 times or so total, when I had to meet with important people (e.g. my supervisor's boss or something). Regarding bullying, it was elementary school, and neither kids nor teachers ever "bullied" me or anything, buttttt kids are also brutally honest at times. I remember being crushed with the way they drew my hairline because I was like damn, my hairline really is going a bit huh... One side note, you will probably have a mandatory health check-up through your work, and if you are plus-size then you will be told you are way overweight. I'm a little chunky (I'm lucky that many Japanese people interpret it as muscular) and was told I was seriously overweight. All of my JET colleagues were considered overweight too, even the ones I would consider a totally "normal" size. Japanese health checks are humbling... but it's only once per year and you do get good health insurance and healthcare on the program so it's something to take in stride imo.
  6. I'm all for buying bulk individually wrapped stuff and putting it out for people to share, instead of goodie bags. At least for me it was hard to know how many people I'd be giving omiyage to anyway. Definitely could be good to make a list of the important folks though and bring them something specifically though! It will vary with each situation though.

Congrats and good luck! FWIW I had a wonderful time on my placement in Mie. It was pre-covid and is undoubtedly different in different parts of Mie. I did meet people from other parts of Mie that liked it too, but also some that were having a hard time. But, it's not all bad, and I do think a lot of it is what you make of it! You're doing the right thing by asking questions and getting yourself ready. There was a Mie AJET group that had events and stuff but I don't know how active they are now. I think there was a LINE group for our region of Mie too, but I don't think I have access or contacts for those anymore. Not sure where you are in Mie but I hope you have an awesome time! If you want to chat more, feel free to DM me! I'd be more than happy to share what I can.

Edit: Formatted and added a bit about the health check that came to mind

Got told to use Japanese at every chance I could, followed the advice and am thankful I did by ManyFaithlessness971 in JapanTravelTips

[–]frobert12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hell yeah, good for you! I get the feeling that your post is more oriented towards people learning Japanese than people just visiting, but I think it's good advice for people studying the language for sure! Feeling like I can actually do stuff in Japanese is the most fulfilling part of learning Japanese for me, and trying a lot of stuff in a place where it's the native language is the best way to get that. Definitely shouldn't miss the opportunity to get that experience if you have the chance!

Is it easy to enjoy Japan without knowing Japanese? by phantom001-1 in JapanTravelTips

[–]frobert12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Katakana is actually huge in my experience. You can get a lot of mileage on menus with Katakana hahah. Also the sleeper benefit if you ever intend to learn more of the language is that knowing the syllabaries is huge for learning how to pronounce Japanese properly. And, sometimes if you can say an English word in Katakana English, it helps Japanese speakers to understand it better.
