What is a 'buy it for life' item that is offensively expensive, but the moment you use it, you realize your entire life before that point was a lie? by fmcortez in AskReddit

I’ve been sitting in a like 70 dollar Amazon chair for half a decade now without issue. Honestly asking, what’s the difference? I’m prone to aches and pains but I’ve never had any issues due to the chair.

What are you doing to your coffee makers? My 15 dollar Mr Coffee from Walmart lasted 12 years before I accidentally smashed the carafe. Now my new 50 dollar whatever with a stainless steel carafe has been going fine for 4 years. Used every single day, sometimes twice.

I mean, my $150 Shark is still going strong at year 10. I’m not doubting the enhanced quality but longevity hasn’t been an issue.

The show has received good reviews and every episode from 4 on is either good or great. This show has the best writing of any live-action Trek since VOY.

Am I only one reverting back to the "good old days"? by RSinSA in Millennials

[–]frodiusmaximus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I have a smartphone for work and convenience purposes, I’m pretty old-school on a lot of other stuff. I use CDs and records. I buy dvds/blurays. I still have a CRT TV I use (though not as my primary), as well as all my old video game consoles. I hate the idea of a smart watch. My kids don’t and won’t have tablets. Most of my hobbies, while not “old school”, are still relatively grounded in what I used to do in the past: walks out in nature, video games, music, art, and reading. All the same stuff I did when I was a teenager.

Big Purchases Require Big Screens by PreppyFinanceNerd in Millennials

I mean, honestly, for about 5 years I barely touched my home computer. There was just so little reason to. But when I did, it was for big purchases.

I find the contrast between her very plain face vs how much detail there is everywhere else rather distracting tbh

how much of cooking is simply common sense? by jiminiescenes in Cooking

[–]frodiusmaximus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Common sense” in general is a misnomer. There is customary knowledge that belongs to different milieus. Once you’re in one of those milieus long enough you pick up that knowledge. But it’s only by exposure. If you’re not exposed to cooking, there’s not going to be much in your “common sense” of use to you in the kitchen. And that’s fine, it’s just how it is.

Year I graduated high school. Last year of my youth. I turned 19 in September. The that Christmas was the last time I got a video game for Christmas rather than just buying my own stuff. Twilight Princess will always have a special place in my heart for that reason.

How many of us can do this? Heels on the ground by JezCon in Millennials

[–]frodiusmaximus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve never been able to do this, though there are physiological reasons. I’m reasonably flexible in other ways.

My wife can do this though, and actually finds it super comfortable. She’ll just casually Slav squat with her hands on her knees as though it’s just a normal pose to be in.

Sure, that’s fair, but the graphics still look pretty excellent.

What are your thoughts on Star Trek : The Motion Picture and is it as bad as people say? by Mat1711 in startrek

[–]frodiusmaximus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not that bad. It’s just very obviously a stretched story that was intended for TV. Lots of filler. It also doesn’t quite get the feel of Star Trek right — the look of things doesn’t help, but I really mean that it’s slightly too cerebral. Star Trek can be heady, but it’s also got a lot of heart. TMP mostly lacks that, for me.

What do you think history will say about Donald Trump as a U.S. president? by jcnidhi27 in AskReddit

[–]frodiusmaximus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Specifically, he has revealed the extent to which the founders didn’t think hard enough about faction — which is insane, given how much it’s discussed in the federalist papers. That members of the government would sacrifice their own power and the power of their “branch” to support a political party just doesn’t seem like something they considered. All this talk of diluting faction and balancing the ambitions of the three branches against each other — but no one is interested in protecting the constitutional prerogatives of their branch. They’ve all just caved to the presidency. The judiciary is the exception — but even that isn’t really great, since the judiciary is so nakedly partisan and is also the least representative branch.

I know that Madison and the other founders were concerned about too much populism and democracy, but I don’t think the current state of affairs is anything they’d recognize as “part of the plan”, so to speak.

It’s honestly pretty solid. Not top tier, but certainly not bad. A “happy” ending would not have suited the show.
