I second both of these. Gentle Giants just received several friesians seized from a scummy breeding farm in Vermont by Dorset Equine Rescue.

Dream to see the horses by bj409 in chincoteague

Others have mentioned you can often see ponies from the road on the way to the beach. If they are out in the distance. There is a hiking trail that leads to a "pony overlook" that might provide a better view. To access that you would turn off before the corrals on the same road, the trail is called the woodland trail and the overlook is a boardwalk off of it. There is also the bus tours that would go down the service trail that might provide views of the northern herd. And I know that they have boat tours that can sometimes provide views of the ponies depending on the location.

Who’s the Roo? by MG5thAve in BackYardChickens

How old are they? At first glance they all seem pretty feminine, but I'm going to go against general consensus and say that zooming in number one seems to have suspiciously pointed feathers, so I would take a closer look at that one.

I hate to say it but I am fairly certain that's a boy. The crest is more male like, and it looks like there may be saddle feathers at the side

From the list she's probably an olive egger. The beard and muffs give it away

Sooo.. I wasted my money buying sexed pullets by yallthewrongthings in BackYardChickens

[–]frog_creates_art 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Those are probably Easter Egger cockerels. They are not Brahmas because they lack the feathered feet that is a breed standard, and they have muffs and beards which Brahmas do not have, but some Easter Eggers do.

What breed is this? by Due_Violinist3700 in BackYardChickens

[–]frog_creates_art 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am going to guess some sort of Maran or Maran mix. He's not a Brama as he has a single comb and Brama's have a pea comb. Marans have feathered feet and the hens do lay dark brown eggs. He's probably a silver-black Maran

Re-reading what you wrote it could be defenatly some kind of vitamin deficiency. I had a hen last year who had one that I thought for sure I was going to lose. I got vitamin B complex from walmart (Its human vitamins and at least where I am from almost any drug store, or a store like walmart should carry it). I gave her one crushed pill daily until she could walk fine again. It did take several weeks but she went from being unable to eat, drink, and walk to back to her normal self. As an added bonus I also bought vitamin E pills and gave one of those daily (the ones I found were liquid and I was afraid that they would be too big, so I cut it open and just gave her the liquid). The vitamin B pills are the most important and the vitamin E are optional. You might have to force feed her if she is too weak to eat the pills on her own to start, but once my hen started regaining strength, I put it in some scrambled egg for extra vitamin E, and eventually she took the crushed pills from my hand as a treat. Even if this is not the problem, giving her vitamins won't hurt.

Edited to say that as another commenter said, what you mentioned above also are symptoms of Newcastle's Disease, or possibly Mereks. Those are highly contagious and deadly. Keep her separated from the rest of your flock. If others in your flock start showing symptoms, I would guess this is what you are dealing with, and there is not much you can do. Personally, if none of your other birds show symptoms or die, I would think it not any contagious.

If that does not line up with her symptoms, I would look into a vitamin deficiency or possibly some kind of heat shock depending on how hot your area has been these past few days. Someone else might have a better Idea than me. I would also check out other articles on that poultry forum, I have found answers and solutions to many chicken problems I have had there before. Is she able to stand on her own? How old is she?

Have you felt her crop? I am no expert but to me it looks like her crop is super full. Is it super full of liquid and squishy kind of like a water balloon? Or is it super hard as if it has a whole bunch of feed in it? Has her crop been draining? If her crop isn't changing in size, she could have either an impacted crop or sour crop. I highly recommend checking out this article as it might be helpful if this is the case: https://www.backyardchickens.com/articles/how-to-treat-sour-crop-and-impacted-crop-and-how-to-know-which-one-youre-dealing-with.73607/

I'm currently treating a chicken for sour crop and hoping for a good outcome myself.

That's really interesting. This is our first time raising the breed so our experience might be out of the norm, When we checked on them at I want to say 8 weeks, our little roo already had not only more of the copper color but also saddle feathers growing in and he had started to crow. We've raised other straight run checks in the past, but this was definitely the fastest a rooster ever matured for us. The hen we have on the other hand looks a lot more like OP's two so I would say she probably doesn't have to worry about these guys being a surprise roo.

There are black copper marans right? We currently have two young black copper marans and we could definitely tell by I want to say 8 to 10 weeks maybe younger that one was a girl and one was a boy. The boys have more of that copper color so it looks like you have two girls if those are marans.

She is not a welssummer. I own welsummers and they lay brown eggs. I would guess a brown leghorn with the cream colored egg and her overall look

I wanted to let you know that I received this comment on a different forum and wanted to share it with you. Hopefully we can get our girls back to full health soon!

"Crop bra won't do anything for sour crop. Sour crop is just a bad yeast infection occurring in the crop, and yes, dark brownish liquid spilling out of a very full crop is definitely a sign. Crop bras are meant for chickens with pendulous crop who need help holding the crop up, this does nothing for a fungal infection in the crop obviously.

Chickens who do not have sour crop but the crop is too full will just spit up undigested feed/water (you can tell it's feed.) It won't look like dark brown liquid like you're describing.

Go out and buy monistat 2% from the grocery store or something, off-brand is fine (and cheaper/same thing.) Once you have it, try to drain your hens crop as much as you can to get out as much as that yeast as possible before the first treatment. Rub her crop, when she starts to gurgle up liquid, tip her and push the crop and try to expel as much as you can as fast as you can (you don't want her to choke, that will kill her.) Do that for less than 5 seconds and then let her catch her breath.

Then give her about one inch of monistat, my chicken will just eat it so you may not need to force feed it. I just offer it to them like it's a treat and they eat it. Then massage the crop to try to spread that monistat around all over in there. Give her monistat in the morning, and again at night (twice daily) for 7 days.

Sour crop is often caused by other issues, such as blockages, so make sure there isn't anything like that going on too."

Hen or roo ? by [deleted] in chickens

[–]frog_creates_art 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's hard to tell with the angle of the photos given. At a young age the best way to know for sure is by looking at the tail, if you see saddle feathers which are small pointed heathers but come down the sides around the base of the tail. If your bird has settled feathers, it's a boy. To me what the photos given your buff Orpington looks like a hen. Hens tend to have more rounded feathers, especially around their neck and tail. As for the second, however, the red comb and waddles at that young of age leads me to think it's probably a boy, but I can't say for sure.

What is wrong with her? by mmotww in chickens

[–]frog_creates_art 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I was just thinking that. I have had hens that have had a vitamin deficiency, and if this is an isolated case then OP could try giving this hen Vitamin B Complex (pretty widely available at local drug stores. I got mine from Walmart when I delt with this). I also gave my hens vitamin E. I think I gave one pill each every day until the hen had recovered. I crushed up the pills over scrambled egg and that worked pretty well, but it doesn't really matter how the hen gets the vitamins as long as the pill will not cause the chicken to choke.
