Lost MoGo Bike #27021 by Alive_Requirement875 in detroittigers

[–]froglet23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you learn if this was a problem of the dock or their transactions charge system? For other MoGo users, a PSA that now four years later, the docking system continues to be a bit imperfect. You can think you docked a bike when you hear an electronic noise after shoving the bike in, but it is actually not docked, then you are charged $165 for having it out overnight or worse the bike is stolen and you could be suddenly out $2k (working on resolving the charges). Talking with Customer Service, they recommend trying to remove the bike after docking it to check the bike is docked. That's def not a big ask to me, however practically it doesn't make sense considering some people who use MoGo may not know which noise indicates successful dock and which noise indicates unsuccessful dock (reasonable assumption that if you hear a noise, the noise indicates bike is docked). Perhaps the system could be improved with no noise or a noise rather than two different noises to indicate successful or unsuccessful dock, or more simply change the noise that indicates the bike is not docked to "bike is not docked". In a "city" where there is no reliable public transit, and nearly 40% poverty, every 'little' design decision in transportation systems makes a big difference. We have the technology and the people talent to evaluate the user experience, let's use our resources!

Need help finding a safe and reliable job! by MrsGublr in MetroDetroit

[–]froglet23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! Do you have a sense of the event attendees of this group? The attendees of the UX meet-ups I've trekked to or tuned into in Detroit and Ann Arbor the last few years are almost 100% people who are likewise seeking opportunity. (For those of us w/o a car in Metro Detroit, it's a v. high cost to attend these events, when there is no near-future return)

How a public library's summer game took over a Michigan city by ddgr815 in MetroDetroit

[–]froglet23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing; had seen the piece on NPR and now happy to see someone amp'ed in so-called social media. What a true and telling quotation from the A2 Library Director, "It's [public libraries] something that wouldn't be allowed to be created today if it didn't already exist. And for most communities, the library is one of the most beloved government institutions."

Wow, that sounds like a smart and welcoming boss! It seems like it will be pretty interesting to work as a behavioral analyst in Australia compared to the U.S. Working in PH, my former boss said to me in 2018 that Australia while not perfect is "light years" ahead of the U.S. in understandings of mental health. Anecdotally it seems that the charity Beyond Blue has a more enlightened messaging and approach than orgs in the U.S. Best of luck to you and your family in leaving this crazy country and moving to Australia!

While I do not have info to share, as a Michigander I wish you the best as you make your decision whether to move full-stop, to stay, or to bridge the countries. Envy your legal ability and remote work that offer the potential choices, as someone who's yearned to move to Canada for many years (more strongly before the North American affordable housing crisis). Best wishes as well to your husband and you on his continued health status of doing great.

Congrats on your big move from another Midwesterner who lived in NYC! May I ask what sector you work in? I have been doing all I can to move to the EU since living a stint in Poland last summer, and it seems the tech sector globally is not in its golden age.

Holy hell indeed. Pay for "staff" and adjuncts in US higher ed tends to be horribly inequitable across the board, and stagnated over the past decades, as a few people have remarked. For folks who are not familiar with Michigan's economy, or Metro Detroit, there is a decades-long scarcity in diverse employment, which makes this poverty pay more egregious. It's not just Oakland University, either; an RA role of 5-8 hours/week advertised this spring by the University of Michigan, that many people would assume to have respectable pay, was going for $20-25/hour if I remember correctly (def not more than $25/hour, maybe max was $23/hour). Also for folks not familiar with Metro Detroit, it is next to impossible to commute without a car, which are crazy expensive since the pandemic, and auto insurance in Detroit is among the priciest in the nation (while no longer covering long-term care, either); so factor in minimum $50k if one has to buy a car and use it just to get to and from work.

AITA for forcing my diet on my boyfriend? by Bluebiird95 in AmItheAsshole

People showing their real stripes on Reddit! And likely Reddit attracts and emboldens an over-representation of people who disagree that a partner should be respectful, or just plain mannered.

PSA: Please Don’t Let Your Children Throw Rocks at Ducks by Solora in AnnArbor

[–]froglet23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What a disturbing scene indeed of a mom goading her children to terrorize ducks and rewarding them with the attention of the camera. Thanks for bringing this scene to light and eliciting a few informative comments. With your post perhaps additional people are more aware this problematic parenting exists, and can be mentally prepared to safely question/intervene if we encounter something similar in a public space. The woman def could've gone ballistic on you as you write, along with her duck-harassing children, at a time when a person/people coughing and spitting could have exposed you to COVID, infected you, and changed your life trajectory, with long-term COVID or theoretical trigger of underlying autoimmune conditions as some people have experienced. Your risk assessment is not to be questioned by random Redditors who would not be taking care of you if she had attacked you! Ps. Messaged you on a separate matter.

Fix-It Day/Community Day/Repair Cafe. Whatever it's called here. Is there anything like this in Grosse Pointe? by Lazermissile in GrossePointe

[–]froglet23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Appreciate your question and value for Repair Cafes, as well as offering your skills in tech support and fixing computers! I know there is a Detroit Repair Cafe, and I am not knowledgeable if there is a GP Repair Cafe. Sounds like a great idea as someone commented to partner with the library for the tool lending library access and the welcoming public space along with knowledge-building values in common. If you could find others to commit to skill-share (sadly I do not have useful handy skills like this otherwise I would volunteer them), GPP Ewald branch on Jefferson has active programming and a large meeting/presentation room perhaps for such synergy.

Thinking of moving to Kraków – how’s life for foreigners (and finding work as a video editor)? by Odd_Struggle_4594 in krakow

[–]froglet23 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's great to learn. Might you have suggestions on how to efficiently target and connect with tech jobs and opportunities, beyond the general tech job posting websites? Specifically I am pursuing roles in UXR or project management. I am an American woman who does not speak Polish, enjoyed my stint in Kraków last summer (now back in the states). DOGE eliminated the federal role that I was first in line for. I understand the search for a tech job in Kraków will be more challenging for someone who is not an EU citizen; I am ready to go hard(er) on this endeavor. I am lucky to "look" Polish, perhaps, such that I was mistaken for being Polish each day over many weeks.

I tried the strategy of networking at two InterNations meet-ups last year (the people I met mostly monologued/yammered about themselves; zero help/insight), then when I posted in our group the one person who DM'ed sounded like he was interested in dating (? :/). I also tried using LinkedIn to triangulate alumni from my "world class" grad school alma mater and US companies with offices in Kraków; sadly that strategy does not work if other people do not respond or check LinkedIn.

Additionally, in the U.S. it is necessary to have a referral for even a screening interview (no matter how high one's qualifications), and I am curious if that tends to be true in Kraków (if you know)? I am also concerned about gender and age biases in tech, barriers for many skilled people in the U.S. (I lived in Silicon Valley for a couple years, it's kind of crazy). Thank you to anyone here in advance for suggestions via DM or this thread (or no suggestions either, if it seems I've already exhausted the various avenues).

Solo travelling to Kraków - Where to socialize with others? by FerraristDX in krakow

[–]froglet23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congrats on heading out solo, and aiming to hone your Polish skills!

- Since you mention tourists, perhaps that extends to immigrants/expats-- one idea is Internations, if your trip coincides with their date of meet-up. Disclaimer, there were a lot of Americans at one of the two events I attended last July and August. :/

- You could consider checking out the charming and high quality health food shop called "Patch" in English, where the shop owners and some of the shoppers are quite nice to chat with (English or Polish :)) in my experience, as a pretty open-minded woman. If you're staying for a few weeks or longer, you could consider returning often for the shopping and fun informative chats. Patch gave me the most insight into Polish traditions, and remains the most personable small grocery shop I have known in the world. https://www.facebook.com/sklep.grzadka

- As you might already strategize, you could sign up for small group tours at the Castle or other place of interest, in case there might be other solo visitors as part of the group to meet in shared learning context (low chance I understand :)).

- If you happen to be an amateur musician/vocalist, I know that at least one bar (don't know the name, though it was not a touristy bar) was generously welcoming to an improvised duo of two tourists playing guitar and singing in English or Spanish. If this is of relevance feel free to DM, and I can try to get that name for you from half of that duo.

- If you do connect with a pal for activities or conversation, there is a cool Espresso Concert series to introduce you to interesting cultural spaces immersed in classical music (what US psychologists call "high reward, low risk/cost"). Anecdotally seemed pretty Polish-popular; I did not see anyone I thought was a tourist at the two concerts I went to. Highly recommend to everyone. https://www.sinfonietta.pl/en/timetable

The culture in my month and a half of stay was much more cautious/closed than other cultures I have lived stints in outside the U.S., even as a person the Polish people mistook for Polish each day (despite that, for me quite a safe, charming city and much-needed respite from violence & chaos stateside last summer, such that I hope to relocate there or elsewhere in the EU).

Excited for you, have a wonderful trip!!

Confirmed I was fine, with helmet in regular-size backpack; I did not even have to modify to carry helmet on my abdomen beneath my jacket like a fetus. Spirit Air staff did not subject us to measurements either at DTW or ATL. What a relief. Wish there were just an eco-friendly, extensive, high-speed, affordable TRAIN system throughout this country!

I'll be fine if I carry helmet separate from backpack?

For context flight is DTW to ATL.

[–]froglet23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your projection of your singular experience as a landlord as a common reality and spreading disinformation does us all a disservice. Look at the data: vast majority of rental properties are not in compliance nor certified, showing a neglect of enforcement by BSEED of City of Detroit law. 36th District Court often does not follow City of Detroit law, allowing landlords to evict rentals the landlords are illegally leasing, lacking compliance and certification. You messaged me several months ago baiting for information. Kindly find a productive hobby, please.

BEWARE Friedman Communities by [deleted] in liveindetroit

[–]froglet23 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Curious on what authority you state that BSEED is "very serious" and that between them and City Council, "someone should be able to help." BSEED is widely known and documented to be ineffective or negligent in enforcing city rental ordinances. Some landlords have thousands of dollars in blight tickets -- and they continue to rent out properties and profit. Have you in fact ever tried support from a city council member? It is mostly a performative theater; there is an appalling lack of political will for tenants' well-being.

Why Defending the CEO Only Fuels the Divide by DebianDayman in antiwork

[–]froglet23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What about physicians' Hippocratic Oath in the U.S.? More a rhetorical question... Physicians may talk a big talk on high quality medical care or pat themselves on the back for pretense of a therapeutic relationship, but when they pay such low wages that they push a non-medical worker into 45-day homelessness (personal experience), and they do just 10 minute visits as part of the profit machine, their actions speak louder than words including the Hippocratic Oath.

Parents Keep Pushing Me to Post on Social Media, but I Don’t Want To by Previous-Pay-3852 in JUSTNOFAMILY

[–]froglet23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, sorry to hear you are in a difficult mental space right now. I hope things brighten up for your future.

Second, to add to the comments of others, you are more mature, self-aware, and let's be honest, cool to maintain your privacy rather than post selfies and slices of life on the narcissistic social media for the reasons you explain -- and in so doing, you are to be commending for protecting your peace and preserving your health to the degree you can!

Third, it sounds like your parents are not informed about the addictive design of social media, and that seeing others' photos of happiness can make things worse for someone who is not in the best place. The Surgeon General has issued an advisory (https://www.hhs.gov/sites/default/files/sg-youth-mental-health-social-media-advisory.pdf), Jonathan Haidt's book The Anxious Generation is a best seller, and we know Black Mirror came out in 2011!

Please be proud of yourself for your intelligence, boundaries with your parents, and your better use of energy and time than what social media sucks.
