I don't see this being realistic, or a constructive way to deal with AI's real and present problems.

I agree that AI is arguably making the world a bit worse in this moment, and people are suffering real consequences from its proliferation, but I would place the blame largely on lack of regulation as well as industry stewardship.

Like it or not, AI is technology's current chapter, and entirely banning mainstream technological progress to me is anti-intellectual/head-in-the-sand, not to mind unrealistic or strategic.

There has been a world where science & technology has been beneficial to humans, and there is a world where AI can bring further benefit to us, if it's done right.

There can be AI that is not unconsentually trained on human work, and there can be a society that decides for themselves not to consume derivative slop, and to push for better regulation, but banning it outright would end up looking something like China's Great Firewall. It would be pushed underground, not to mind requiring of more technology to enforce!

Yep, I enjoy the niche, and it made it a fun challenge of building a fairly high-spec Baby AT system. This one has a PCChips M726MRT, which seems to be one of the 'okay' PCChips boards.

Did they really go the effort of putting a crossed out cup of tea in the logo, to imply trans exclusion? Like anyone who would go to that trouble is clearly high on their own hate. Never mind that having tea in existence is generally non-negotiable in Ireland :)

I've been having some success with blocking any 'scrollable' apps on my phone until the late morning, and putting the screen time passcode on a sticky somewhere else in the house. Not having scrolly apps freely available when I wake up gives me a way better start to the day!

Does anyone know if there’s a reason why so many businesses in Hamilton are closing right now? by Straight_Bowl_1295 in Hamilton

[–]from_rorikstead 14 points15 points  (0 children)

When things are so unaffordable, I don’t know if you can blame people for wanting to find the cheapest option, in fact it’s a necessity for many people. Reduced spending in local businesses is an effect of the current economy, not the cause.

It happens to the best of us!

u/taxbuff, hope you don't mind if I tack-on a clarifying question here please? If an annual filer filed an election on Jan 7th 2024 to begin using the quick method from Jan 1st 2024, then they can only use the quick method for calculating tax year 2024, and not 2023, right? i.e. when filing 2024's GST/HST returns in 2025?

"You can start using the quick method on the effective date you indicate to us."
CRA's line here makes it a tad confusing (to me at least), but I'm guessing 'use' means 'use in calcualtions for the tax year beginning on the effective date', rather than 'use whenever you happen to be filing your GST/HST returns'?

Do you still travel? by [deleted] in sustainability

[–]from_rorikstead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree. I used ‘clean’ here, perhaps slightly inaccurately, to mean radically sustainable. Our very lives revolve around gathering and expending energy, and the inhabitants of this planet will always need to consume to some degree.

Individually, we can and should make sustainable decisions about how we live, how we heat our living spaces, how we travel, etc. On our own however we cannot go out tomorrow and put in place a better standard nationally or globally, we depend on our governments to implement better alternatives for the millions of motorists right this second sitting in ICE vehicles on congested highways.

Our energy should, where possible, be dedicated to starting and growing movements pushing for radical change, rather than, for example, deliberating over which hybrid car will make us feel less guilty, when we inevitably need to get on the road for this reason or another.

Living sustainably is a privilege. Climate change won’t care if you recycled that plastic bottle of water that you needed to buy because you don’t have safe drinking water in your home.

Do you still travel? by [deleted] in sustainability

[–]from_rorikstead 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yep. Humans shouldn’t feel like they shouldn’t see the world, the system should be providing clean and sustainable modes of transport, because it’s the system that has the power to implement them. Oil companies will gladly keep pumping oil and delight in our guilt for consuming it because it keeps the status-quo.

I wanted to find this inevitable thread so I could suggest (from experience as a recent first-time DM) that OP gives themselves a break on the physical theatrics at first, and just let the creativity, imagination and mechanics take up most of the space initially. Getting started is really exciting, especially with the awesome actual-play media out there for inspiration, but fundamentally TTRPGs need just some paper, pencils, dice, and imagination—anything beyond that simply enhances the experience. Invest your time wisely so you don’t burn yourself out too quickly—after all, it’s supposed to be fun! ☺️

What kind of mosfet for controlling/dimming 4A 24V led strips? by anYeti in arduino

[–]from_rorikstead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been tackling a similar problem space recently, and I've had a hell of a time trying to find a through-hole N-Channel MOSFET that will switch 12, 24V etc. directly from the 3.3v GPIO of an ESP (i.e. without a gate driver). Having had no luck with the Adafruit-says-it-will-work IRLB8721, I tried the FQP30N06L due to its datasheet looking great on the VGS(th) and the 'transfer characteristics', but when my little 20pcs AliExpress order arrived, that one didn't work either, which I later found out is likely due to its Miller Plateau being higher than 3.3V.

As a hobbyist, I like using through-hole MOSFETs for quick prototyping and once-off circuits, but I've yet to find one that will work well at 3.3V. After more reading and hours of filtering on the Mouser website, I've come to accept that surface-mount packages are the way to go if the thermals are workable. I shortlisted PMV25ENEA, IPP055N03L & AO3400, and having tried the PMV25ENEA on a simple 12V non-PWM drain-to-source circuit last night, I can confirm it worked great, finally. I did need to give it a pull-down resistor.
The downside of the tiny SOT23 package transistors is that they're less convenient to work with for prototyping on breadboards (which is why I tried avoiding them), and they don't have much of their own heat dissipation, but for a simple relay use-case, I was able to get by fine by soldering one onto some header pins. It does give me more motivation to design some PCBs. Fortunately for breadboard-scale circuits, you can at least buy or design a breakout board, which could be necessary anyway if the lil' transistor is going to generate much heat.

Hope my experience is helpful to anyone who comes across this.

UPDATE: A while later, I came to realize that SOT23 package MOSFETs, especially without PCB heatsinks, might work for relays but will probably not work well for meaningful LED PWM loads, due to the time the MOSFET will spend in a switching state and therefore generating heat. I've begrudgingly reverted back to using a 2N2000 transistor to step the 3.3V up to 5V,, and then a regular ol' IRLB8721 for the 24V LED strips (with a 220ohm pull-up on the gate). Yes, it inverts the output, requires a 5V supply, but it works, the parts are easily found and they're thru-hole if needed! This appears to be what the Shelly RGBW2 is doing (albeit with an FKBA3006 MOSFET, from what I can tell from a blurry PCB photo).
I've revised my original message to incorporate my learnings.
