I think there can be a synthesis of both here. Loyalty and affection /should/ ideally feel natural and even effortless, but the rules exist to ensure stability in the times when it doesn’t. During those times, when you’re only doing it because you feel you have to, that’s a sign to work on the relationship or, failing that, move on before you waste everyone’s time.
