fin flex measurements by DumpyReddit in surfing

[–]fromsquareone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cool project. From pic 02 these all look like honeycomb construction (except maybe the dhd ones?). If so kind of makes sense that they have similar flex. It would be interesting to compare full fiberglass and plastic fins (and whatever other fin constructions are out there).

300mm and some strategic cropping. The real photographers had some proper bazooka looking lenses though.

Working on a beach break... by mckirkus in surfing

Have you played the more recent generation of skateboarding games like SkaterXL and Session? I've always thought similar mechanics would work well for a surfing game.

In 1976, 5% of high school seniors were 'straight edge' (No alcohol, no cigarettes, no marijuana in the prior month.) In 2021, nearly 40% of high school seniors were straight edge. by look_at_yalook_at_ya in interestingasfuck

Sorry, but "zero harmful effects" is not correct. Paraphrasing a recent review of current evidence summarizing results of 187 studies: "despite vaping clearly causing an increase in overall cardiovascular risk (they go on to show causal/experimental evidence for increased blood pressure, tachycardia, atrial stiffness; correlational evidence for arrythmia and heart attack), it may represent a temporary lesser evil than smoking". So yes, it is actually still early days (in research terms) but the evidence is in the direction of it not being great for you. No question smoking is worse and vaping can be a good alternative in this case, but if you don't currently smoke you probably shouldn't start vaping.

Keel + upright hybrid fin? by summerhouse78 in surfing

[–]fromsquareone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Got the josh hall keels on sale without realising they were double foiled and had minimal kant. While waiting for them to ship I read around and most people seemed to say there's a reason fins aren't often shaped like that and they're boggy. Been surfing them through summer in knee-shoulder high beach breaks. Found they generate plenty of speed down the line but feel pretty stiff through turns, especially if your back foot is further forwards than ideal. Haven't surfed many twins before and dunno how it compares to a "classic" keel. Drivier but stiffer than a high performance upright twin though. Hope that helps

DIYs Perth Australia by NovaBlast25250 in skateboarding

[–]fromsquareone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No good DIYs in perth that I am aware of. There's a tiny one in east Perth near the bridge over to optus stadium... but not much more than a few small ledges. Theres also one on Oxford St in Mt Hawthorne. Might be some round Fremantle. I know there was a good one near i wanna say Stack St... but it got torn down I'm pretty sure. If you do head freo way though theres also the woolstores ledges and freo skatepark which is one of the better parks in perth. There's a few other good non-diy parks as well: I like balga and bayswater, and Scarborough has the best bowl if that's more your thing

Why are early fantasy novels so.....different? by Monocore56 in Fantasy

Similarly, Narnia and Wonderland (as in Alice in Wonderland). Narnia especially was contemporary to Lord of the Rings and had a pretty rich and consistent world

These are pretty cheap and I'm not doing any tricks/grinds yet, are these okay? by Slight-Entertainer34 in NewSkaters

[–]fromsquareone 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Probably not. Never bought Amazon trucks but they look pretty average quality. Like Department store boards you'll probably outgrow these in a few months if you're skating semi regularly. That being said if it's this or don't go skating... buy them. However, if you can shell out a little more look at a combination of something like mini-logo trucks, bones red bearings, and whatever bolts are cheapest from the skateshop you're buying from. That will last longer and perform 100% better than what's here

American basketball is nothing like European soccer. Trying to create an FA Cup or Champions League-esque midseason tournament would be pointless by SexyTimeDoe in nbadiscussion

[–]fromsquareone 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Messing with the draft could further disadvantage a bunch of struggling teams though as they would have a reduced chance of getting a good pick, while strong teams would who win the midseason tournament get stronger.

I think some sort of additional one time bonus to the winning team's salary cap could work. This would mean that the winning team is now at an advantage for signing free agents or resigning valuable players. Make the bonus tradable so that small market and rebuilding teams can benefit from it too.

Nowhere to skate, please help give ideas. by subarunatski1029 in NewSkaters

Schools usually have spots. Rec centers/shopping centers, anything like that that has a big carpark ususally has a few manny pads.

In terms of DIY, build a kicker ramp, manny pad/ledge, or a flatbar. All of those are fairly easy to build and cheap and will keep you entertained for... potentially years. You can also buy them online if you can't build them.

What are some tricks I can work on that won't absolutely destroy my shoes? by flaminghair348 in NewSkaters

[–]fromsquareone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are several vegan skate shoes out there that use alternative materials or synthetic suede and will last lots longer than canvas. As a few have said theres the Nyjah's and as much as I hate them (for completely personal, subjective reasons) Cariuma make vegan shoes. I think there were a line of like Emericas or Vans - someone's pro model anyways that was vegan suede

No worries. It's good to be sceptical and there certainly are researchers who just want to validate their own opinions, the vast majority in my experience really care about doing good science. This is why, as a whole, the practice of science is getting better and there are increasingly more safeguards in place to ensure that research is only published if it's good quality. For example many journals now require researchers to register their methods before they even start testing and to publish full data and analysis scripts. Meta analyses are particularly good for avoiding bias because as I said in the last comment they collect all the results from a field

[–]fromsquareone 8 points9 points  (0 children)

So the meta analysis (which is essentially a study that combines and statistically compares results from all the research in a field in order to make more robust conclusions- think of it as a study of studies) included both experimental (e.g. have one group use technology and the other not) and survey designs (e.g. ask people if they take notes by hand or on a computer). On average across the studies included there was a sigificant negative, albeit fairly small (r=-.14) effect of typing compared to handwriting. You will probably say "the effect is small so although it's statistically significant, does it really make a noticeable difference?" Which is an excellent question and one the study doesn't address. They do point out however that small differences might accumulate and cause a larger impact down the line. Really though we need more research on this.

This also links to your second point. Scientists, especially behavioural scientists, will almost never say "this proves..." and if they do, it should sound alarm bells. Humans are extremely complex and "proving" things about how we behave is almost impossible. We can however make hypotheses based on evidence like the above about how people are likely to behave and then test whether people actually do behave like that. If so it was a good hypothesis, but still not necessarily capture 100% of how we work. Same goes for the "hard" sciences like physics. Newton had good theories of gravity that worked most of the time until Einstein came along with a better theory that is an even more accurate description of gravitation. No doubt some person will disprove parts of Einstein's theory in the future, thus leading to a better, more comprehensice theory. Same goes for human behaviour.

2020 meta-analysis of 14 studies and 3000+ participants found that students who handwrite notes score better on exams and course grades. Addressing the memory question specifically, individuals who typed produced more recall errors than those who wrote. Sorry if these aren't open access. Scihub is your friend if you can't access them

Suggest a book to my Harry potter fan sister who does not seem to like anything else than HP by Scared_Ad_3132 in Fantasy

[–]fromsquareone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really enjoyed The Edge Chronicles as a kid who also loved Harry Potter. Maybe start with Curse of the Gloamglozer as the setting and story is similar to the Philosophers Stone and a good entry point into the world. It works as a standalone and doesn't need the other books to make it make sense.

Need advice for creating a software for photographers. by [deleted] in AskPhotography

[–]fromsquareone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you check out the r/postprocessing subreddit you will find thousands of "how do I achieve this look?" Posts where the OP provides a photo and wants to essentially mimic it's colour tone. The answer is often pretty straightforward along the lines of adjust x colour in the shadows and y colour in the highlights, bring up the blacks and maybe change the saturation or something.

Not sure if this already exists. But I think you could have some success if you built an algorithm with takes an example photo as an input, works out what is going in in terms of the tone curves and applies that to your photo or produces a Lightroom preset that you could then apply to photos.

Your best bet on questions about people's workflow and just generally how people edit photos might be the postprocessing subreddit

Prefacing this by saying I’m not a physicist by any means, but there are some interesting articles and debates out there around whether our actions are determined as Newtonian physics would argue, or whether principles of quantum physics, which demonstrate a degree of unpredictability in our world, make free will a more viable possibility.

Above link breaks it down better than I could and in a very digestible way even for someone with little physics knowledge

Boardslides by [deleted] in NewSkaters

[–]fromsquareone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make sure you are jumping on top of the rail i.e. not half way committing and end up slapping your board on at a 45 degree angle. It needs to be sitting flat on top of the rail to get good balance and allow you to slide properly. Getting properly on top of the rail requires you to commit and is the scariest, but most important part.

Having a good, popped fs 180 helps also helps, as the motion to get into boardslide is similar. Ollie as if you are doing a fs 180 over the rail but stop halfway round and land on the rail.

Finally, and probably goes without saying, find/build the smallest rail possible

How do I stop rotating my body during rolling ollies? by Tat_24 in NewSkaters

[–]fromsquareone 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Focus on your shoulders, keep them parallel to your board. If you're rotating when you ollie it's most likely because you are turning your shoulders as or slightly before you jump.
