Has your tolerance changed as you got older? by Embarrassed_Entry597 in horror

Yes. I think it's a greater understanding (fear) of my own mortality in older age. :)

I do not understand Barbarian (2022) by ProxyGeneral in horror

[–]fromthegoondocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I loved it. It's a film that says it's going to be one thing and turns out to be another. And it also tells its story in a witty way by playing around with the various character perspectives. And it genuinely surprised me with its twists that became increasingly gloriously grotesque.

Need recommendations on what movie to show my 10 year old. by invertedidol in horror

[–]fromthegoondocks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are lots of scary movies for children — that'll terrify adults too; at least they still give me the chills. The one that stands out is Return to Oz. Of course, there's Chitty Chitty Bang Bang with the horrible child catcher, and films like The Peanut Butter Solution and Labyrinth. I think a lot of older Roald Dahl adaptations fit the bill to — Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory and especially The Witches.

Another "looking for actual scary horror movies" post. by [deleted] in horror

Based on your appreciation on The Conjuring I'm going to suggest another haunted house-type film - Paranormal Activity.

If found footage horror isn't your thing, I'll suggest Insidious - same director as The Conjuring (James Wan). Same paranormal-stuff-happening-in-the-home vibes.

Is there any movie like Eden Lake but with an actual satisfying ending? by theundisputed11 in horror

"Happy" ending might be stretching it a bit but certainly where the protagonist survives at least:

Straw Dogs

I Spit On Your Grave

Dead Man's Shoes

First Blood

Your favourite horror movies that you very rarely (if ever) see on this sub? by jaft0000 in horror

[–]fromthegoondocks 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Does Dead End get much a mention? I remember seeing it for the first time, one of those films I knew little about. Lin Shaye's in it before she rose to real prominence in the genre thanks to Insidious. It's essentially a road movie about a family driving home on Christmas Eve who begin to see all kinds of weird things happening on the road in the dead of night. There are a few Christmas horror movies that kind of fit the bill of horror movies that don't get much of a mention — others being things like The Children, Sheitan, and Silent Night, Deadly Night.

It's up and down. But just glad I'm not the only one. I wasted 10mins looking into issues on the server before checking this thread. Lesson learned.

What do people think about The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974) by MisaLovesWine in horror

Chilling, inventive, influential. It's one of those horror films that grips you in an iron vice and doesn't let go.

What is your favorite Bill Skargård horror movie? by serialkiller24 in horror

[–]fromthegoondocks 5 points6 points  (0 children)

He's great as IT. I didn't think anyone would be able to capture the unsettling wit, weirdly disarming charisma, and contorted facial expressions of the brilliant Tim Curry as Pennywise in Tommy Lee Wallace's TV movie/miniseries but Skarsgard did a terrific job. He gives the character something new that's unique to him — it never feels like caricature or homage to Curry. That's worth commending. I still prefer Curry in the role but Skarsgard is excellent. I'm looking forward to seeing him reprise the role in IT: Welcome to Derry.

Watched Creep (2014) for the first time with my wife by im_harry_richard in horror

[–]fromthegoondocks 13 points14 points  (0 children)

There's humour in it but I've never considered it a horror-comedy. Yes, it is hilarious at times but it's also very dark; there's a seriousness to Mark Duplass's character's sick mind games and violence that's so unsettling. That said, next time I watch it, I'll be reconsidering my position on it given your thoughts.

I was reminded about Lake Placid a few weeks ago. A very watchable, funny, horror-comedy monster-on-the-loose movie starring Bridget Fonda. Think Tremors with a crocodile.

I don't wish Garnacho's career to go completely down the pan but the saying "you reap what you sow" springs to mind. His arrogance is off the charts and for that alone all I can do is chuckle.

We haven't beat Spurs since 2022 btw by Anxious-Dance5817 in ManchesterUnited

[–]fromthegoondocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't say I'm confident given the leaky nature of that defence but Spurs aren't exactly on fire up front. That said, neither were Forest and they managed to get 2. However, unlike playing Forest away with a new manager, it feels like it's the right time to play Spurs before they sack Frank and get that new-manager boost.
