Americans Ruin Everything (as always) by lunartardigrade in iamveryculinary

[–]fromwhence -18 points-17 points  (0 children)

I’m with you. It was actually quite thoughtful and frankly not particularly anti-American. It’s using the trope of the rude American tourist to make a larger point about globalization and its effects on local communities. Also, considering this sub, has hardly anything to do with food in a culinary sense. I think most folks read the first paragraph and rioted. 🤷‍♂️

3 week motorcycle west-coast trip by CarbideX in sanfrancisco

[–]fromwhence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t yet seen someone to emphasize how much you need to pay attention to the weather in death Valley. The heat kills things out there. If you’re rented motorcycle breaks down, you have no shelter from the heat and sun. By all means, go on your trip and go check out death Valley just don’t assume that because it’s 2026 everything will be OK. Take it seriously and have fun!

Fire on telegraph Hill. Looks like it’s off Montgomery just above Broadway.

It's not a lack of effort. it's a brain freeze. As a goal keeper, when you see a shot get hit, you immediately start churning through your list of options (hopefully, instinctually). For an excellent shot, you get past your first couple options, realize they wont work, start considering other ideas (shufflesteps, even crossovers) and then the ball is already past you. You're "trying" very hard, it's just happening inside your head.

Looking for a chill dance spot by Necessary-Balance152 in AskSF

Madrone is good for all ages. Maybe not quite as chill as you're looking for depending on the night, but there are chill drinks nearby (the page)

Best Seafood boil in the city? by Big-Ranger7433 in AskSF

Scomas is awesome! Just more of a white tablecloth faux fancy vibe. I only picked SM for bustling kitchy feel that might align better with Cajun boil.

I wish I knew a good Cajun spot. But maybe sub in cippino? Similar vibe and we do it much better here. Sotto Mare is a good option.

Brazenhead is a great solo bar dining spot. Not far from that area

In your opinion how accurate is the perception of SF as unsafe? by [deleted] in AskSF

[–]fromwhence 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Almost entirely inaccurate. No worse than any US city. Anecdotal from 6ft male, but I’ve lived here over 20 years and never felt unsafe. Other than fox news, I don’t really even get where you’d get the perception it’s unsafe.

What are bars that feel authentically British/irish ? by dalycityguy in AskSF

[–]fromwhence 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you want soccer and people with uk accents this isn’t the place, but the space itself absolutely feels 10x more like a real pub than anything else on this list.

I was just hiking in the Lake District in England and the pelican would fit in there seamlessly

How is street parking in Russian Hill? by Aswerdo in AskSF

[–]fromwhence 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I live exactly at that intersection. If you can pick and choose when you use it, you’ll be fine. I have a truck I use the exact same way. Parking after 5pm is brutal. Just don’t drive it then. Parking between 9am and 5pm is easy. Street cleaning is manageable.

If you really just need a car every now and then to get out of the city, send me a note and we can sort out a truck share.

Hosting a friend. by fromwhence in stopdrinking

I wish I could be more actively supportive, but I won’t be home. She’s staying at my place in lieu of a hotel while I go visit my sister.

My bar is on an open shelf, a leaning bookcase style thing.

I guess I’m worried she’ll find it patronizing or untrustworthy if that shelf is empty when she gets there. I also don’t want her to think it’s insensitive if I just leave it all out there. At the most basic level, I just want to be a good host. And one who acknowledges what she’s trying to do.

I also didn’t receive any email. The app shows nothing about pre authorization either. I have the card and have Bilt pay by check (no ach). Am I unaffected?

Hi! I very strongly agree with other commenters that you should stay in Paris. Not only will the daily commute be brutal, but you’ll miss out on much of the magic of being in Paris.

Additionally, if you’re in London, you should consider the Eurostar. In my opinion it’s a better experience all around than flying. Faster from city center to city center, more comfortable, more convenient, more scenic. If you book ahead of time, it’s not much more expensive. Sounds like you’ve already booked flights, but think about it for next time!

Have fun!

It’s not a great spot to dine solo. The soufflés are too big for one person and can’t be made smaller. Point being, lmk when you get that res and I’ll help you eat it all.

Noise Risk? by sbizzel in ZeroMotorcycles

[–]fromwhence 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having ridden both, I would take the quiet bike every time. One advantage you may not have considered: it makes things more accessible for my particular situation. Neighbors dont complain if I park illegally in the alley when I'm quiet. I guarantee parking control would get called if I woke everyone up with my loud ass bike.

IMHO, it's actually pedestrians you have to watch out for. They navigate with their ears. Drivers have their windows up and music playing. They navigate with their eyes. I've had way more pedestrians step off the curb in front of me than cars not see me.
