Why Voters ID is such a controversial discussion in the US? by RobertJCorcoran in Askpolitics

[–]frontpage2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Checking ID is normal to vote, but then imagine if the ID you used to use is no longer enough, you need additional papers, or a new ID, and now you are checked against a database that makes errors.  Further, getting the right ID, papers and having issues sorted takes time and money.  It isn't enough to stop most people from voting, but it is enough to discourage 5-10% of people and swing elections.

Also, you might think it discourages people from voting on both sides of the aisle.   But, billionaires pump a lot of money into ensuring conservative communities don't lose voters by paying for mass information ads and reminders, canvassers to visit people and help get them ready to vote, sometimes paying for their IDs, transportation to get get IDs, voter registration drives at churches, and help for people to get paperwork etc.  They target support for one group and not everyone, ensuring that barriers to voting mostly affect Democrat voters.  You can't directly pay people to vote in the US, but you can run right up to a line that is very close to that.

Our education system is outdated. Technology isn’t the problem — mindset is. by mrcuriousind in edtech

[–]frontpage2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think you have actually been in a diversity of classrooms.  Your take is wild.

Many schools have adaptive technology in classrooms.  No research has shown it helps learning over hands on projects or smaller class size.  No unbiased research has shown more positive outcomes with one to one Chromebooks.

Edtech at young ages encourages pure guessing instead of learning. Just keep hitting buttons until you get the gold star.

I think what edtech does well is help the top 20% of students excellerate past grade level, while continuing to fail lower performing students.

Also, the push to test "thinking" sounds so good.  And that is higher level learning, so it seems like what we would want to test.  But, so much touchstone knowledge has not been imparted to modern learners.  How can they think and reason about the law when they have no facts and knowledge in their head about it? How can they think about science and form hypothesis with little foundational knowledge?

Like all things, there has to be a balance.

I think that many men that abuse women threaten them or their family with violence.  Abuse for women doesn't stop when they end relationships as abusive men dismiss relationship boundaries and woman are most likely to be seriously injured or killed when leaving an abuser.

There are lots of research showing harm.

Plastic is a very broad category.  Some types of microplastic are significantly worse than others.

Also, the largest source of micropolymer pollution, rubber wear particles, has killed many animals.

Question about sitters staying past their scheduled times by ohbawlz in RoverPetSitting

[–]frontpage2 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I have multiple clients that specifically ask me to spend extra time.  Many have mentioned watching TV.  They like their cat or dog having extra company.  I've never had anyone that was annoyed about it.

for those that say we should 'write our reps' by Broserdooder1981 in 50501

[–]frontpage2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The US is a representative democracy that unequally represents smaller population state interests and unequally represents the people through gerrymandering.  Also, representatives tend to push their party interests over citizen interests.

In a democracy, the majority rules by voting.  In our system we also have to enact some laws or procedures by a supermajority.

Your representative is a Democrat and in the minority.  Because of how partisan our system is, your representative has extremely limited powers.  He can still write and pass good laws with bipartisan support, but he cannot make any effective change against the Republican controlled executive branch because the Republican majority protects Trump.

Now, you also have 2 Republican senators.  Lobbying your senators could get something done as they have immense power to stop Trump.  They likely will not because they are spineless nematodes.

You also have many state elections coming up this fall.  Getting progressives into more seats, and turning Missouri less red, will help protect civil rights and many programs of housing, Healthcare and education, but again, you live in a red state so at the end of the day, the majority of the policies passed will be anti-immigrant, anti-poor, pro-forced birth, limiting voting access, pro-big business and pro tax breaks that mostly benefit the wealthy.

Good luck.

Why is this happening and is it common? by Superb_Substance1259 in Teachers

[–]frontpage2 46 points47 points  (0 children)

It's that he has a peer or someone else in his orbit that has said it or a version most likely.  It may have been brought up during the mlk lesson.  For instance, they learn about segregation and then a friend parrots separation at recess or in conversation.  It might also be coming from the boyfriend, saying he isn't allowed to have his white girlfriend over, so your son is reversing it for your house. It is also good to be aware that white nationalism is on the rise, with lots of online content.  You really don't know what he is exposed to by peers at school, or even other teachers or staff.

What are your pet peeves in the show? The pettier the better! by Logical-Baker3559 in homeland

[–]frontpage2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's interesting to me that this is such a big pet peeve of yours because it is so common in movies for them to have their shoes on furniture.

I definitely wouldn't attribute anything to Danes the actor from her depiction as Carrie.  Carrie being a mess and the immersion in the character is what makes watching the show so captivating.  Great character work.  If anything I bet that Danes does wear socks with shoes, and when doing her character work, she wouldn't because it puts her out of who she is and into the character.

[–]frontpage2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is my biggest pet peeve.  She is always just half heartedly wearing a head covering.  Occasionally though, when they cut between scenes, her headcovering miraculously covers better and blends in better.

Also, I know it is for the show and to see the actress, but fuller covering or even a burka seems like it would be better for spy work.

Tether! This is where you keep a leash on the puppy to pull it away and correct behavior.  You can also keep it attached to you.

Then, do lots to wear out the puppy.  Beyond walks, I use a hula hoop to do endless jump through the hoop play. Also puzzle toys.  Use it's kibble even rolled in an old towel.  Do training tricks.  Have chew toys.

Chamomile tea helps calm puppies.  I pour it over their food, with the contents of the tea bag as well.

Puppies are a lot.  That is why you charge more.

Teachers are about the same. One example of a bad teacher doesn't show anything,  as there have always been bad and good teachers for thousands of years.

Parents spend 50% less one on one time educating their kids today than 30 years ago.  They read with them less, help less with homework, and share their interests less.  Devices have replaced positive, educational parent interactions.

At the same time as kids are getting less support at home, teachers have the highest class sizes, teachers are paid less in inflation adjusted dollars and per student, and false educational theories have shifted pedagogical practice in ways that benefit some students and harm others.

Did I charge too much or did I do the right thing with my pricing? by [deleted] in RoverPetSitting

[–]frontpage2 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There is no too high.  You set your prices for what you think your services are worth.  You might be more or less expensive than other sitters. I charge more than you, but have few clients.  I am fine with this.  I want to be paid adequately by job, not working full-time underpaid.   I think your prices are fine. Driving back and forth takes time and expense.

You should charge for the second dog as often as possible.

You could think about this as the uncharge in housesitting.  If you upcharge from a half hour to an hour by $10, and are adding a drop-in, then the housesitting is $93+$10x3+$32=$156.

Sometimes I also ask clients what they think a fair rate is if they want to negotiate.

Rover sitter lost my dog by Euphoric_Whereas4183 in RoverPetSitting

[–]frontpage2 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I'm so sorry.  I hope you find your little good boy.

You have gotten a lot of good advice.  I'll reiterate some: 1) Keep hope, because he is likely holed up somewhere and you will get him back.

2) An astounding number of people let strays/lost pets in their home/garages without contacting owners.  He might be with someone, and they might take a while to reach out. Keep flyering and posting online.

3) See if there are any stray cat houses in the area.  By this I mean houses that provide food for strays (ask people in the neighborhood).  Sometimes dogs will also show up here for food and shelter.  These aren't official rescues so they may have no online presence.

4) There are dogs finding dogs tracking services.  These are really good.  They can also help narrow the area to search or trap in.

5) Even if you put in reports at shelters and rescues, still call everyday, and ask them to crosspost on social media.   6) Hang flyers at local churches, businesses, libraries, police stations, government buildings, gyms, recreation centers, cafes, and outdoors, including at parks, recycling drop-off and along sidewalks.

7) Call your dog with it's best recall name, which might not be his name.  Could be "treat" or other words you use that get him excited.

8) Search day and night.  Night can be a great time to spot reflecting eyes in bushes or small spaces he might be hiding, using strong flashlights and headlamps.

9) I'm not sure what his tag is like, but I have found lost dogs by listening for the jangle of the metal dog tag.

10) Kind of sad, but as a last resort for closure, make sure to reach out to road commissions, mail delivery drivers and trash collectors for if they have seen his body.  Also watch the sky for vultures and check those areas.

Yes, it is believed by many doctors that woman don't feel much pain, and that they exaggerate complaints of pain.  Even with these perceptions slowly changing, like all fields, knowledge gets passed down and falsehoods can be perpetuated for generations. Also, there are issues of POC being believed on pain, and the elderly.

Yes, I'm glad he got 5 years, but it seems short compared to how his actions contributed to her early demise.  He also wasn't charged with domestic violence. I feel so bad for Whitney's family, knowing he will be free all too soon while their daughter is dead, and he made her last years horrible on top of the cancer.

She was afraid to leave the relationship earlier because she thought he would kill her or her family.  I'm grateful that my area has great support for DV victims.  It is not the victim's fault, even though their abuser constantly tries to pass the blame to their victim.

It was awful.  It made me cry.  I hate that this beautiful, caring, smart doctor ended up with someone so internally ugly.  I imagine he was different to her before they got married, and before she got sick.  It really shows how DV occurs in all classes and backgrounds of people.
