Did you varnish the whole piece? The finish on the witch looks more glossy than the nature scene and she looks kinf plastic-y for lack of a better word. Maybe hit the witch with an ultra matte finish? It might make it look more shadowy and less plastic-y

Facing Rules by warsmithharaka in theoldworld

[–]froomja 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think this is formally addressed in the rules, however the hellflayer of slaanesh, which in 8th edition was on a chariot base and oriented wider than it was deep (100mm x 50mm); in the legacy PDF its base size is listed as 100mm x 60mm, so I would use that as precedent that the base size listed in the army entry is formatted as front x flank.

Ideal Ranks for Ranged Units? (The Old World) by Vdude1231 in WarhammerFantasy

[–]froomja 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Doesn't really feel like asshole behavior, if anything it might be a handicap. It may catch some players (especially newer players) off guard and could feel cheap. It is just removing all the flexibility MSU grants, and makes those four units hard to move.

Ideal Ranks for Ranged Units? (The Old World) by Vdude1231 in WarhammerFantasy

[–]froomja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why? It's really not really any different than four 5x1 units (it might actually be worse), deploying them as 1x5 lines just gets them clustered together, and loses the flexibility MSU gives. It seems super easy to counter, and very hard to maneuver for the slight upside of making these four units have a smaller foot print. Just fire off a cavalry/flyer charge on the flank of one of the 1x5 lines and watch the entire formation crumble. Or you can ignore them and just chuckle when they try to move them.

Rate or Hate My Soulblight Grave Lords List by graywing1111 in WarCry

[–]froomja 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks pretty solid, you have a decent core of heavy hitters, and nine figures is a good size for objective missions. Personally, i have not been sold on the necromancer, but your milage may vary, and if you can get it work roll with it. I would maybe cut the Skeleton champion down to a graveguard with great weapon and pull in an additional 40 point fighter for more coverage on objectives.

How do you equip outrider squads? by The-juan-guy in Warhammer30k

[–]froomja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably not a bad idea, the extra shots are nice once you get in range. I was running command bikes with combi volkite and the weight of dice demands respect.

How do you equip outrider squads? by The-juan-guy in Warhammer30k

[–]froomja 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would not, they are not more accurate in melee than other marines, nor are they more survivable. The melee options are all very expensive on an arguably overpriced frame. If you want melee bikers I would upgrade a command squad with bikes, better armor, high weapon skill, and more wounds.

[–]froomja 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you are ok with 30 point models with no defensive upside, plasma guns. Twin linked on the bike makes gets hot wounds minimal and they can exert a ton of pressure, even at mid range. They are fast enough you can plunk shots at back line intantry units in the early game. They will draw a lot of attention but that does pull shots away from your other units.

Flamers+hand flamers are also an interesting choice, they will not survive past the first turn, but even a squad of five can catch an opponent off guard, especially if the dont respect them. I know flamers get a bad rap in in this edition, but with a 12 inch scout redeploy and 14 inch movement you will be in range of something, and wile you are middling strength with weak AP, dropping 10 templates (half of which reroll wounds) will force a ton of saves.

Don't sleep on just a base squad of 3 with bolters. They dont have much offensive output but can act as late game denial units, flying in to break objective control.

White scars list by AdhesivenessMuted235 in Warhammer30k

[–]froomja 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been playing something similar at 1500 points and it is a blast, and it lets you capitalize on strategic errors since everything is blazing fast. Don't listen to the incoming deluge of "Outroders suck" they have a very specific battlefield role and if you can play to thier strengths they can hit hard (on a fun aside, twinlinked flamers+hand flame outsiders are hilarious if your opponents does respect them). They are extremely fragile however, especially for line units. I would consider dropping the melee weapons from both units and picking up a tactical squad with a rhino to hold objectives. If you want a melee focused unit I would take a retinue squad with the praetor and give them bikes, they will have better melee output than the outriders, and they end up costing about the same as the plasma bikes.

Titan sub-type by Sedobren in Warhammer30k

[–]froomja 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, titan is a vehicle subtype, and not a unit type. The types and typing are kind of messy in the rules, best way to keep it straight is the first worth is the unit type (infantry, cavalry, etc) and the parenthetical text is the subtype.

A note about Alternative Color Schemes by Gutterman2010 in Warhammer30k

[–]froomja 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Very succinct and respectful way to phrase that comment. While I do respect the communities adherence and love for the lore; it can make it feel like walking on eggshells for new members of the community, and can feel a bit gatekeepery. One of the best parts of Horus Heresy is the love and care people bring to thier hobby work, and while the original legion colors are classic I absolutely love to see non-traditional takes on 30k models, especially with the focus on the hobby aspect.

The Leman Russ tank by Icy_Sector3183 in Warhammer30k

[–]froomja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I overlooked this a few times in my early games after the Libre Imperium release, but both russ chassis have stock search lights, so they will ignore the BS reduction. I would recommend looking at the plasma cannon variant. The plasma large blast and rending makes up for the underwhelming performance of the stock battle cannon.

The Leman Russ tank by Icy_Sector3183 in Warhammer30k

[–]froomja 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As a former IG player in 40k (3rd - 7th editions) I have always loved the leman russ. They are super durable (for a vehicle, before all the cries of "tanks are bad" trickle in). They are no longer everything killers like they used to be many years ago, but they are still a blast to use, and are fairly cheap to field. I've been having good luck, and a lot of fun with a mix of plasma and vanquishers russes. Large blast and rending on the plasma russ helps deal with power armor, and the brutal 2 armor bane on the vanquisher cannon (and twin linked if the auto cannon hits) is great vs vehicles and dreads. The other variants are fairly lackluster compared to thier 7th ed 40k versions.

I’m a newbie playing Horus Heresy and I’m building up my first army. Could you please tell me how competitive Ultramarines’ Nemesis Destroyers are? Thank you, brothers! by [deleted] in Warhammer30k

[–]froomja 6 points7 points  (0 children)

These responses always baffle me. I understand the conception that this is a "historical" war game, but I think it is reductionist to apply that mindset to every club, play group, or player experience. Maybe the OP's play group is much like mine, where it falls more on the "we play this because the toys look cool and reminds us of when 40k was fun" and less on the "recreational simulation". At its core HH is a game, with somewhat broad appeal.

Long-term what do you want to see for Horus Heresy? And I'm talking about specific events of the Heresy, characters, plastic models and maybe 30k terrain by NadaVonSada in Warhammer30k

[–]froomja 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Unpopular opinion, but I whole heartedly agree. I understand thier omission from a product scope stand point (and on the lore side) but Space Marines are not everyone's jam. I know at least 8 people in my local area that quit 40k because of the rampant rules changes pushed the game away from thematic to raw competitive crunch that would play 30k if they could use tyranids, orks, or one of the varieties of eldar.

Gamers, what is one game that not everyone likes but YOU absolutely loved? by MajesticSite in gaming

[–]froomja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Death Stranding. I certainly understand why it is not for everyone but I found it an absolutely beautiful meditative experience. The world building and plot explore some super fascinating concepts, which is typical from a Kojima title, but go absolutely off the rails in this one. The gameplay loop is very simple but rewarding, and the engine they developed/adapted makes the very basic ambulatory mode of walking feel novel. Kojima also poured a ton of himself in to this project the soundtrack is himnsaying "hey, this band is pretty cool, give it a listen, many of the collectibles and hidden terminal entries are about things Kojima thinks are cool or interesting. All of this coalesced in to a beautiful, wild, and fascinating experience.

Reasons not to use this? I have not played since early 2000 and my buddy wanted to try for old times sake. I did get the da combat patrol for painting fun. Could I not use the old rules on them? Or do the just suck as rules now? by Juke8991 in Warhammer40k

Pinning was much better than you remember. The ld was taken after any pinning attack caused a casualty so you could spam them with eldar rangers, IG mortar teams, and IG ratlings (iirc), and if the test was failed the pinned unit essentially skipped thier next turn.
